Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

When we show up, we win.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

When I was faster i was always behind.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

He really is that stupid.

This post is in: America, Election 2018, All we want is life beyond the thunderdome

I am settling in and starting to knit. The 538 election monitor just gave people heart palpitations, but as of this instant seems to be back to 5 out of 9 that Dems will take the House. Someone on Twitter commented that the way that indicator is fluctuating means it’s not a very good indicator. Which I tend to agree with.

Meanwhile, some good things are happening.

Kim Davis appears to have lost. The clerk in Rowan County, Ky., became a folk hero to social conservatives after refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. She trails Democrat Elwood Caudill by 54 to 46 percent, with 89 percent of precincts reporting

I’m looking forward to the results of some of the New Mexico races, but the polls haven’t closed yet. They will at the hour.

Contrary to my foul-mouthed persona here, I never swear at my day job, so all of my coworkers came running after I yelled out, “Oh, shit!” when I dropped a full cup of hot chocolate on the office floor. They were worried that I had injured myself since they’d never heard me swear before. ?

When election results differ from expectations, there is a tendency to assume that it was the result of recent campaign activities. But the evidence is that Americans’ preferences for the Republicans vs. Democrats have been very stable. Take a look, for instance, at polling from Civiqs and just how consistent it has been.

Davis, you surely recall, earned international headlines in 2015 for refusing to issue a same-sex marriage license on “God’s authority,” becoming a darling of anti-LGBT hate groups and going on to campaign for a failed same-sex marriage ban in Romania. @CaseyL: I didn’t read the other one, but Twitter was like that. So full of despair.
I think we’re ok, although some of my pets haven’t won yet, like Gillum and Beto, but there’s still time and not all precincts are in.

@mad citizen: How many precincts are still left, though? How can they call it for Cruz if the blue areas haven’t been counted and one area’s polls just closed?

    @BlueDWarrior:

Beto is still within 100K with most of the big counties still not reported. Harris isn’t even to close until like… now maybe?

Looks like they called it for Cruz. :( Beto did an amazing job!

I’m sad about Beto. But we have not seen the last of him. We’ll be seeing him again. I had wished we could have kicked out Cruz, but unfortunately that didn’t happen.

Been living in this district 20+ years. We have had a Republican Rep in all but two. Dem won in 2008 and lost in 2010.

Lots of negative to out right lies about Andy Kim by Tom MacArthur. Probably has had an effect.

ME: Golden just pulled ahead of Poliquin, still close though. Neither have 50% so far (ranked choice). Mills D for Gov is looking good atm.

Nate Silver projects a Democratic win in the House, with a 95% confidence level. TPM comments that it appears a blue wave washed over the suburbs.

OK, some hope left. My family (ravens being family-oriented birds) probably keeps its health insurance.

On the other hand, Republicans have held the Senate. Not surprising, but unhappy. More Republican judges, more Republican foreign “policy.”
