Up till now, Nixon’s ‘You won’t have Dick Nixon to kick around any more’ speech was supposed to be the exemplar of national-stage political self-pity. Trump’s press conference yesterday bids fair to unseat it. Per ace Trump-rally reporter Daniel Dale:
Trump: "The candidates that I supported" had "tremendous success." He is pointing to the candidates he had rallies for. Left unsaid: the vulnerable House Republicans did not want him to have rallies for them.
— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) November 7, 2018
In the House, Trump says, they overcame "a historic number of retirements." Left unsaid: there were so many GOP retirements in part because incumbents knew this election would be bad.
— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) November 7, 2018
Asked if he expects investigations on everything from his tax returns to his cellphone use, Trump says, "If that happens, we're going to do the same thing. And government comes to a halt. And I would blame them."
— Daniel Dale (@ddale8) November 7, 2018

Big exchange here: Asked what lesson he took from the results, Trump says, "I think people like me. I think people like the job I'm doing, frankly."

I don’t know how Trump’s statement is playing on the tv, but just FYI on the radio he sounds batshit insane.

Genuinely impressed CNN isn't covering the show Trump's trying to co-produce with them. They're keeping the control of their programming that Fox has lost to Trump.
— Ben Smith (@BuzzFeedBen) November 8, 2018
The thing about this White House is that, over and over again, they choose to lie in order to justify wrong and stupid decisions, knowing the press will get worked up over the lie and the base will either believe it or not care about it at all.

This speech from Trump is what happens when a narcissist has been shamed, knows it and is forced to talk about it before they've managed to seed a face-saving narrative.
This is hurting Trump. This is a wound.
Combine that with no rallies to go to… and he's miserable.

Now for the latest in a long series of pointless online rants about the awfulness of the BBC’s coverage of American politics and other issues, yet more head-meets-desk fuckery from BBC Radio 4 News this morning on the way to work.
Apparently Tuesday night was a terrible night for Democrats, really, really disappointing, since their whole strategy revolved around Georgia and Florida. It wasn’t a Blue Wave, more of a Blue Trickle (hearty chuckle), because ‘everyone’ was saying that Republicans were going to disappear from the landscape and Democrats were going to take the entire House and win a supermajority in the Senate. Evidence for this? Well here are quotes from the Washington Times, various conservative blogs, the NYT and Administration officials. Can’t get clearer than that, can you?
Followed by a segment where a right-wing loudmouth (Toby Jones) who was forced to step down from a Government appointed public post because of a long history of really offensive public vileness was brought in to explain why the calls for another right-wing (misogynistic, homophobic, anti-semitic) loudmouth (Roger Scruton) to be denied a Government appointed public post because of a long history of really offensive public vileness are yet more evidence that poor, downtrodden, white-male conservatives are being criminally hounded by relentless left-wing hypocrites for straying from ‘Progressive Groupthink’.
Next up, President Trump has fired an underling who he says persistently let him down. Here to discuss why that’s just fine and the Democrats are wrong to complain, please welcome the esteemed Professor Alan Dershowitz…
Then I turned it off. It’s getting worse and worse. Can you possibly guess the line they’re taking over whether or not the Democrats should hold any investigations whatsoever into Trump’s many crimes? Nah, you don’t have to guess. Just read any random column on the topic from your favourite ‘centrist’ both-sider and you’ll have it in full.
Bleeeaugh! I’m paying for this shit.

@zhena gogolia:
I have never liked the wall to wall coverage on TV news of multiple killing events, but it seems that trump has even take that off the air. the murders in CA get a 60 second spot in between wall to wall coverage of trump on MJ. As someone said in reply to your tweet They have changed the subject from Sessions to Acosta. and now, not even mass murder can turn the topic away from trump.
When a shooting happened under President Obama – the media was up in arms, calling for him to “do something” and calling out the President because it was happening under his watch. With trump – the media don’t even expect a thoughts and prayers tweet any more.

@zhena gogolia:
It’s just appallingly bad. When they do a deeper piece you occasionally get elements of reality peeking in past the inflammatory headline and can learn something interesting, but they are always presented as the ‘contrarian’ POV in opposition to the main editorially-mandated (I can only presume from the relentlessness of it) adherence to ‘Dems in Disarray’ storylines and the constant parade of Heritage Foundation/former Administration Official/conservative intellectual RWNJs they put up as ‘experts’.
It’s like everything bad I ever hear you guys saying about NPR, but with cheery British accents.
Another Scott
@Tony Jay: I feel for you, but it’s nothing new AFAICS. Katy Kay anchors BBC America’s reporting quite often and she was a huge St. John McCain fan, etc etc.
Read McCatchyDC if you want decent American politics coverage, but they mainly do long-form stuff (I think – it’s not a regular read for me).
One has to be skeptical of all political coverage. It’s the nature of the beast. Let the BBC know that you are not happy, and hang in there.
Cheers,

Tragic shooting overnight. Mass killing. 13 dead. Country Western bar as venue, I guess that part is kinda “new.”
We can do something about this. A lot of our new Congress(women!!!) ran on better background checks and no bump stocks, and we can have the CDC begin funding studies of gun violence and deaths again, since it is a public health issue. Administration might not want to provide enough funding, but Dems hold the purse now, don’t they?
We can make a start.
Elizabelle
WRT the fake “assault” accusation against Jim Acosta: I hope that will blow back badly upon Liar Sarah Sanders and the Administration.
(1) Stop sending reporters to the press conference. Best to send no one, but extremely young interns will do (although, frankly, the WH might prefer them).
(2) Fight back hard against the accusation. Call her a liar who doctored a tape.
(3) Can Acosta and CNN sue for defamation? Because it’s all on tape, and what Sanders is saying is not what happened.
Do not let these bad actions have no consequences.
And starve the beast. Trump lives on attention. Turn it down.

I remember when we talked about, say, Harry Reid that way–there was a time when it seemed like that, during the Bush years. I can understand bashing on Schumer. But Pelosi? I’m old enough to remember when she was always spoken of as this extreme liberal firebrand.

The thing that baffles me is that this is British news talking down American Democrats using American Republican framing. Why? It’s not like the Democrats are in any way Left-Wing by British standards, Centre-Right if anything, so it’s not institutional conservatism colouring their viewpoint. It’s got to be editorially mandated. A top-down decision to sublet all US coverage to Republican friendly sources and outlets. Oh, do not get me started on their Brexit coverage. It’s a spin-off from their general politics coverage, which is heavily influenced by their institutional friendliness to conservatism in general and Tories in particular. Brexit is a Tory problem turned into a national disaster, so obviously coverage much be fitted around the Government’s need to justify its failing policies and not challenge the prevailing storyline about “The Will of the People”, which means only Brexiteers and fellow travellers get to provide ‘insight’ without brutal pushback. Uninformative and a clear violation of the BBC’s core remit to Inform and Explain, but that’s what you get when the alternative would mean declaring a kind of war on the people who control BBC funding and would love, for all kinds of reasons, to privatise the whole thing.

The protest people campaigns are almost always fronts to siphon off votes. They also serve the goal of saddling a party with an ineffective, do-nothing, at cross purposes with the rank-and-file, lid on the opposition. Like Jeremy Corbin in the UK. Very hard to do in a Federalist system, but the gave it a try with Wilmer’s quixotic run.
