Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

You cannot shame the shameless.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Let’s finish the job.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Everybody saw this coming.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

The willow is too close to the house.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

This fight is for everything.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

“woke” is the new caravan.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

I got Ric and Zooey Cat Balls (yes, you can find them by googling that, but you will have to do a little looking) for the cool winter nights to come. The cats really like them.

We’re getting into our first snow storm of the season. Just starting to stick here.

@rikyrah: You mean Republicans who are desperately trying to steal another election? I’ve heard that there is a deadline for the recount. Not sure why they’re setting a deadline versus just working their butts off to get all votes counted.

Long before Amazon existed, bought a set of plush caltrops as a gag gift for a friend who was into the SCA and historical armor and weaponry. When I say “into” I mean to the extent he made his own mail armor at home.

Later heard back from him that they turned out to be the best cat toys ever (he was living at the time with a lady who had nine cats), as no matter how much the four footed demons batted them around they always were right side up., which the cats apparently thought was the coolest thing.

Can’t seem to find the type I purchased, which had more rounded ends, but did find these still being made (you’ll need to scroll down a bit at the linked page).

@Kent: I do think NYT has the best organized format. Search for elections 2018 and click on any state link and go to the bottom where all states are listed. You can bookmark or leave the page open.

I can do that and find various results sites like CNN and the Guardian but they are mostly static and don’t have updates and stories about all the outstanding races and counts that are stil ongoing in CA, AZ, GA, and FL and elsewhere. I’m wondering if there is some go-to site that keeps track of all the stories about the currrent races and counts around the country. Surely there must be. I don’t want to just look up a result from someplace. I want to go see what CURRENT news there is about the various counts and recounts going on.

Because if there wasn’t, any time a Republican lost an election in a state with a Republican in charge of elections the count would drag out for months. -Lori

I posted this late last night. Reposting for those who weren’t up.
My friend Nik is a veterinarian in Megalia, CA, near Paradise. He is suggesting that people who want to help with the animals displaced by the Camp Fire in the northern Sierra Nevada donate to the Critter Pass Ranch. Their main focus is on disabled animals, but they will be busy with all sorts of animals in the current situation. They are housing some of the pets of Nik’s family while they are evacuated.

@Patricia Kayden: Florida codified our election certification process with dates way before we turned into an almost 50/50 state with sides that hated each other. The laws were in place for 2000 which is when I learned all this. I also learned that the party that ends up winning has no incentive for fixing whatever has been discovered to not work. It’s as if they think the luck is always going to break the same.
There is good and bad. Automatic recounts for specified close elections seem good to me. The deadline was bad in 2000 and probably will be again. Until dems control enough of the state again, it won’t get fixed. However auto recounts mandated by law are really good.

Cat updating: my cat Ocean has gotten into the habit of plopping into my lap whenever I sit on the sofa. She used to get herself onto my chest but lately she’s settling for the lap.

Writer updating: am struggling a bit with my NaNoWriMo at the moment and need an infusion of writing sprints to regain focus.

Comic-con updating: I will be a guest author at the Clermont (FL) Comic Con on Sunday November 18th from 10 am to 6 pm. I’ll be promoting my ebooks and the anthologies containing my short stories. You are all required to attend. No excuses, even if you’re in Alaska that weekend.
