Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving day.

Very low key here- went to mom and dad’s, and it was just me, them, Seth, and family friend Tony. Turkey was exceptionally good, and dad made a very interesting tofu loaf for Seth that I tried- it had tofu, quinoa, and portabella mushrooms and an interesting curry taste.

Hope you all enjoyed yours. I’m sitting here watching Return of the King and chilling with the pets.

    I just realized that I don’t actually know if I’m supposed to work tomorrow. Probably not. On Wednesday my boss said “Anybody coming in on Friday? No? Ok.” But what if I’m supposed to be working from home?

    Whatever, I’m still sleeping until 11.

    Well, I finished all my Black Friday shopping.
    I have the 5 natural hair care lines that I will use in 2019.
    Three are new- I hope that my hair likes them.?
    Nobody would believe that 75% of my Black Friday money was spent on hair products, but, oh well..This is truly their only sale for the year.

    Had a low-key dinner.

    I got embroiled in some second-hand Black Friday shopping today. Started with a friend’s e-mail wanting me to do a “quick check” of the Dell computer she was thinking about buying, which escalated into a series of e-mails, texts and eventually phone calls as she changed her mind, added and subtracted features and then threw a monitor into the mix. Eventually got it all sorted out to her satisfaction, and I think she got a good deal on a good system, but, man, I felt like I had been out marauding at the stores.

    We had Thanksgiving twice. On Sunday with my sister, BiL, and the nieces who spent today with their sister and mother in Texas. Then again today with the local fam & friends. On Sunday we did it by the book. Today we had tri-tip & crab legs. Both days, various wines.

    There were no RWers and almost no political discussion. We talked about films and music. It was a damn good day and we needed one. This was the first holiday without our mom. We all miss her terribly. She was the center of us. Now we have to build a new one.

    Turkey and various sides divvied up and packaged for niece & nephew, and youngest kid & spouse. The latter announced they were spending the night, which is fine but we didn’t know until they told us after dinner.
    There is a gallon of pozole that has been left in our fridge. I don’t know how much she made if we got a gallon of it.

    It was a pretty swell party, everything tasted good, several people took naps in the living room before we had dessert. We ate around 1:30 this afternoon, dessert was at 5.

    I don’t think I ate that much but I couldn’t finish my modest plate of food. Everyone else went for seconds and thirds. I think I’m getting old and don’t need as much food or something. That’s a thing, right?

    Just got back from my brother’s. I need to stay up for another hour or so because I want to buy theater tickets for the Pantages — they’re doing a Black Friday special starting at 12:01 am where you can buy a package of tickets for 3 different shows for $147 per person. I’m hoping we’re able to get the shows we want on the days we prefer, but we’ll see.

    @opiejeanne:

    Have you noticed any issues with your sense of smell lately? That can really affect your appetite. I wouldn’t worry just yet since it’s a high stress time of year but, as Yarrow said, it’s something to be cautious about since it can be a sign of another health issue going on.

    @Schlemazel: The food smelled pretty good to me but I just couldn’t handle the green bean casserole OR the sweet potato casserole, They were brought by guests and neither tasted good to me. I was interested in the pozole but it should have been served in small bowls as an appetizer, and I was full before I remembered it. I don’t know if anyone finished theirs, because it was dished up after the turkey and other sides.

    When I was a kid I was skinny and didn’t eat much compared to other people, I was rarely hungry, I just had little capacity but my energy level was good and I got enough exercise. When I got married my in-laws made a big deal out of me eating so little, compared to them. Not particularly nice of them. Maybe I’m finally returning to a pattern more normal for me.

    @opiejeanne:

    Like most soups and stews, pozole is usually just as tasty the next day, and sometimes even tastier, so you have plenty of time to enjoy it over the weekend. It’s one of my favorite soups — I love the big chunks of hominy. If the person who brought it included some shredded cabbage on the side, what you do is heat the soup up, put a clump of shredded cabbage in the bottom of the bowl, and then pour the hot soup over it. That way, the cabbage softens up a little bit but stays crunchy.

    We did end up on a new plane late Wednesday and ended up getting into BWI around 10:35 PM. Rather than press on with the ~2hr drive to my parents’ place we’d reserved a hotel room near the airport, but it was a bit of a race to get through baggage claim and car rental and get there before midnight when the check-in desk shut down (because BWI’s rental facility is rather distant from the terminal). At any rate, we made it and are now enjoying a low-key weekend with family.

    Well, we drove all the way up to the top of our ridge, to our neighbors and friends house. He built it, with some help on framing and the roof, but did virtually everything else himself, and with the cedar siding on now, it looks really good. He cooked a good sized turkey on a smoker grill, dressing, squash, mashed potatoes, really good gravy, and two bottles of red for the 4 of us. Our dogs joined their 3 dogs, but teh cats stayed home. Less than half a mile each way. We sold them their land, one acre for $10.00 and love and friendship.

    It was wonderful. I made cranberry chutney with fresh-squeezed citrus juice and pecans, and a maple-pecan pie, which was delish, though I worried the crust into shape, it had been a long time since I rolled out a pie crust, and it can be tricky. Every scrap of butter went into that pie!

    They collect mushrooms on the farm and share with us, morels in the spring, chanterelles and chicken of the woods in the summertime. Wonderful friends and neighbors and people, progressive in every way. He built their home with just help from friends to get the roof on, the rest pretty much with his wife, who became a licensed electrician for the task.

    I am thankful most of all for my friends and the support I receive from them, including you jackals here, and Cole who is the ringleader.
