So I wasn’t planning on doing Thanksgiving this year, but this morning a 15-pound bird fell into my lap – almost literally. (Whole turkeys are not really a thing over here. You usually have to order them days in advance. And I just wasn’t feeling it anyway.)
Now I definitely can’t pull together a full Thanksgiving in 10 hours, but our regular Shabbat dinner tomorrow will be turkey, cornbread dressing, green bean casserole, and the one forlorn can of jellied cranberry sauce I found at the Asian grocery.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! We’re just chilling at home so far today. The mister made his famous homemade cranberry sauce this morning, and it’s chilling in the fridge. @OzarkHillbilly: We had akbash dogs to guard our goats and they always stayed outside, with shelter of course, with the goats. It is best, if you use dogs, to have at least two. They work together so that they don’t get ganged up on by the predators. I kept one as a house dog, and, on rainy cold days, she would beg to go outside and would sit out there for hours if I let her. I would swear she was smiling. They have a double coat which repeals moisture and keeps them warm. Also, they snuggle with the goats.

Good morning & happy TDay to my fellow Jackals.
Anyone here still watch the Macy’s parade? I used to when I was a kid but find it is more of a spectacle than parade nowadays. And the giant balloon floats just aren’t as compelling after you are like ten years old. We have a local version here in St Louis which is a bit more interesting due to its local nature & not being overly packaged.
And does every community of a certain size (having enough local high schools) have a T Day football rivalry game? We do. Two local high school teams fighting it out for possession of some bell every year. It’s a big deal if you live in one of the communities.
Okay, off to mow the leaves into the lawn.
Marcopolo
@OzarkHillbilly: All three of the huskies/husky mixes I have been blessed with loved being outside no matter what the conditions were–in fact, they were quite happy being out & about in 20-30 below when I lived in Fairbanks, which is one of the reasons I first adopted a dog. @Marcopolo:
I don’t bother watching because the balloons are an afterthought on television. Screw the lip-syncing dancers.
I went to the parade one year. A beautiful but cold day with an intensely blue cloudless sky. A bit of a wind. I was surprised to see how the balloons were blown about and how often they bumped into the buildings at either side. People watching from the buildings would scurry away from the windows and then return when the balloon had passed.
This was before the year a woman was injured by a balloon, so there were no worries that day.

@Raven: I remember! Did you ever get your pictures posted here in On the Road?
In other news, I am on cat duty again since my neighbor is out of town for Thanksgiving. I only have the morning shift this time, not both morning and evening. The dry food bowls were empty when I arrived and when I filled them the cats went right for them. I then opened the canned food and put that in the other bowls and they demolished it in about a minute. I’ve been taking care of these cats for several years now and that has never happened. They usually eat some of it and wander off.
I’m wondering if the evening shift person didn’t actually feed the cats all the food they’re supposed to get. I’m pretty sure they won’t starve but it’s odd how quickly they finished their food. I’m going to see if it happens again tomorrow morning and if so I might increase what I’m giving them.

@satby: I know the evening person was there because I saw the car in the driveway, the outside lights were turned on and they also left me a note. Otherwise that would have been my thought too. Evening person is a good friend of my neighbor and is a real animal person so I don’t think it was neglect. Maybe just a mix up. Or maybe the cats knew today was Thanksgiving and were looking for an extra treat. If that’s the case they’re probably very disappointed with me.
satby
@OzarkHillbilly: I know shelter would be provided because you’re a good guy. I have two shelters / warning pads on my porch for other people’s outdoor cats but they’re very seldom used. I find them buried trying to keep warm in the leaves waiting for me to bring out food, or I watch the one cat freezing waiting across the street for his human to let him in. He used to go onto the one warmer, but I think too often by the time he could cross the street his human would shut the door and leave for work, so the cat prefers to tough it out by the door now.
@Marcopolo: it should be fairly obvious I wasn’t talking about dogs bred to be outside. But I guess I should clarify that. And even if they are, chained outside alone is a hellishly lonely life for a pack animal. And too many people do that to them.
Raven
@cmorenc: Yea, it is a bit strange but seems almost universal.

Happy Thanksgiving from the left coast. We had a few hours of rain last night, but not enough to trigger any mudslides from the Woolsey fire. So, thankful for that. The missus has the flu so not sure if we are going to the in-laws for dinner tonight. If not, I’m taking over her famous pineapple bake, carving the turkeys, and then bringing home dinner. Right now she is coughing up her left lung, so it does not look good.

@Yarrow:
I don’t know how many cats you’re feeding, but if even one of them had developed thyroid disease, they’d probably eat everybody’s food and be looking for more. Our Sasha was always kind of indifferent to food — until she became hyperthyroid, and then she was cleaning her plate in nothing flat and going after the other cat’s bowl. It’s just something to consider.

@JMG: It never occurred to me to mix cider with bubbly, but I’m gonna try that! Thanks for the tip!

@Sab: We are in coyote country so we only let one cat out, and only with supervision for ten to twenty minutes at a crack, and only during the day. We watch the sky as well as the cat, and when we spot a bald eagle in the area the cat goes back indoors, no exceptions.
We hear the coyotes at night sometimes, sounding like a pack of crazed chihuahuas. When they sound like that they’re saying grace before tucking into Fluffy or Rex. We see the “lost cat” “lost dog” posters all the time in this neighborhood.

@NotMax: Wonderfalls is terrific. I’d never heard of it before a friend gave me the set as a gift many years ago. Truly lovely show.
Also partial to Frank’s Place, Tim Reid’s follow-up show to WKRP about a northerner who inherits a relative’s New Orleans restaurant catering to the local mostly African American population. I gather they had issues with song rights and it’s never been rerun or issued on DVD.

@Yarrow: Rose Parade, NEVER Rose Bowl Parade. /California Girl.

@Shana: I remember that one! I was always fond of Tim Reid. For some reason I wasn’t hooked on WKRP when everybody else was watching it, so I discovered him first as “Downtown Brown”, the cop friend of private detectives “Simon and Simon”. Was happy to see him come back on “Frank’s Place”, and when that sadly folded, I saw him over my kid’s shoulder on “Sister, Sister”, a show she was addicted to on the Disney Channel (I think).

@satby: and because this subject pisses me off.

Well, jackals, we’re off to our older daughter’s house. The kids are hosting and we’ve been pretty much barred from doing anything but showing up and eating ourselves into a coma. Play nice!
Sister Golden Bear
Happy Thanksgiving my fellow jackals!
I’m thankful that we finally got rain yesterday in NorCal that dropped the air quality index from the 160s (more than 3x the limit for “healthy”) down to around 10. Unfortunately, I’ve still got a sore throat and a tight chest. Hoping it’s just an after effect of the smoke and that I’ve not got a cold.
It’s the first Thanksgiving without Mom, but I’m doing surprisingly well. Partly because it’s the first time in years that I haven’t had to travel to SoCal for the holidays — something I’ve dreamed about for years. Because I was the spinster daughter, I always had to go to Mom’s, so this is probably the first time my adult life — at age 54 — that I’ve been able to celebrate Thanksgiving (and Christmas) on my own terms.
Getting together with friends for Femmesgiving — we’re gonna do high femme today and get all dressed up. Thankfully, my friends invited me before my Fox-loving uncle did, so I could truthfully tell him I already had plans.
Sister Golden Bear
@Yarrow: FWIW, when I had cat sitting duty recently, the cat also devoured his food. I was doing both the morning and evening feedings, so I know he had what I’d been told to give him. OTOH, he’s a kitty teenager, so maybe that was a factor.
opiejeanne
Happy Thanksgiving to us all. A great pack of jackals.
Ajabu
Happy turkey day juice. I’ve been mostly lurking lately because I am busy working. Holiday season is a busy time for working musicians! Much love to you all. You keep me sane in this political Hellscape…

@zhena gogolia: That’s a good point and thank you for the advice. I’ll see how the next few days go and if something seems off I’ll let my neighbor know. My neighbor will be back on the weekend so I don’t have too many days with them.
They were all acting a little weird this morning. One of them kept talking to me, which almost never happens. The friendliest one–the one that’s always waiting by the door when I come in–kept disappearing behind a piece of furniture in the office. I had to go track him down. That one is a former feral that has some kind of neurological issue and occasionally lists when walking so I’m never quite sure what’s up with him. I hope they’re okay. They’re all sweet kitties in their own way.

@Yarrow:
It could be stress eating because they miss their servants.

@Sister Golden Bear:
Sounds great!

Happy Thanksgiving Jackals! I’m home with my mom and niece, gathering with most of the rest of the family later.
Grateful to be here, and grateful for all of you.
Enjoy the day!
satby
@Ben Cisco: you too Ben!

@Shana: Oh, wow…my ex told me about “Frank’s Place”, tho’ he couldn’t remember the name. He described it very vividly, and I’ve always wanted to see it.
Wonder what the hassle about the rights to the music is all about?
Making dipping chocolate right now, getting ready for TD at the neighbors’!

@Raven: I was in DC over the Veterans Day holiday to attend the 25th anniversary of the Women in Vietnam War Memorial. The first service was held Saturday night at the Memorial, but the big observance was held at the Wall and was part of the yearly Vietnam Memorial service. What a moving place that Wall is. I’m of the generation and it hurts so much to see that wall of names and know this was my men who gave their life for a pissant war.
My condolences on the loss of your 20 year old brother. I’m sure you think of him everyday.
gammyjill
Happy Thanksgiving! I suppose I’m lucky in that I am probably the most conservative member of my family and extended family I’ll see today. And I’m a flaming liberal!

@Mr. Mack:
Hang in there, do as the docs say, every step. It can be beaten back. I have, 2 yrs ago, mom did 50 yrs ago, and I have friends who have as well. If you’re in the mood, give thanks that many treatments work far better today than they did, even just 20 yrs ago. I do that regularly.
Happy Thanks for all of you and Georgia
And remember, nothing is too stupid for his nothingness.

@Immanentize:
Happy Thanksgiving to you and Little Imma?
Ruckus
@NotMax:
Wonderfalls.
Now that you mention it, I just started watching it again last night for the umpteenth time. Didn’t run long but they did pack a lot into that one season.

@Shana:
Frank’s Place was a great show. CBS didn’t know what to do with it. My favorite episode was when Frank was asked to join a Black social club, and then found out that he was going to be their first Black (darker than a paperbag).

@cmorenc:
That immortality, that’s the point of the wall isn’t it? They aren’t numbers, they have names and a presence, you don’t forget them as people.
Many people didn’t get the point of the wall, but it was so that all of them are not forgotten but remembered for what they were and the extreme price they paid.
Ruckus
@OzarkHillbilly:
LOL………
Thanks Man!

@gammyjill: I knew a number of the women on the committee for their monument. They used to have a fundraiser on Vets Day weekend called “The Delta to the DMZ”. I think that will be the last one put there because they have got to keep it from being a memorial garden and lot’s of people want their unit or specialty recognized.
Gammyjill
The committee started in 1985 and my friend Karen and her partner Jane have been active since the beginning. They are from Santa Fe, where I used to live.
gammyjill
@Raven: My friends from Santa Fe were on the committee from the beginning. They are Jane and Karen, both wonderful women.

@Ruckus: Sort of like the Old Synagogue in Prague which has five rooms of whitewashed walls, with the listings of every name and dates of the Czech Jews sent to the death camps. So simple and so moving, like the Vietnam Wall.
