Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

We still have time to mess this up!

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Everybody saw this coming.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Late Night Russiagate Open Thread: Corsi (Claims He) Sings for Mueller

Given that Mueller’s office has no incentive to publicize who they’re in plea talks with (and Corsi himself cooperated with the story), this seems like a pretty transparent effort to angle for a preemptive pardon. https://t.co/U85rKIQU9O

— Julian Sanchez (@normative) November 23, 2018

Failed investment specialist Corsi first came to national attention as the scriptwriter for the Swiftboat libels against John Kerry in 2004, and has made himself a nice living since then embroidering conspiracy theories ranging from Obama’s foreign birth to abiogenic petroleum origin (‘dinosaurs cannot turn into oil’). A man whose commitment to the truth is so feeble that Alex Jones’ Infowars fired him is not necessarily a reliabe source, even about his own legal jeopardy. And yet…

Corsi confirmed the plea negotiations after they were first reported by @washingtonpost Friday. “It’s true. Your story is accurate,” he told @PostRoz, declining to comment further except to say there may be further developments next week.https://t.co/Oy1HPmLL7J

— Matea Gold (@mateagold) November 23, 2018

…The talks with Corsi — an associate of President Trump and GOP operative Roger Stone — could bring Mueller’s team closer to determining whether Trump or his advisers were linked to WikiLeaks’ release of hacked Democratic emails in 2016, a key part of his long-running inquiry.

Corsi provided research on Democratic figures during the campaign to Stone, a longtime Trump adviser. For months, the special counsel has been scrutinizing Stone’s activities in an effort to determine whether he coordinated with WikiLeaks. Stone and WikiLeaks have repeatedly denied any such coordination.

Stone has said that Corsi also has a relationship with Trump, built on their shared interest in the falsehood that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States…

The deal is not yet complete and could still be derailed. Last week, Corsi said his efforts to cooperate with prosecutors had broken down and that he expected to be indicted on a charge of allegedly lying. He described feeling under enormous pressure from Mueller and assured his supporters that he remains supportive of the president.

In a webcast and a series of interviews, Corsi said he had spoken to prosecutors for 40 hours and feared that he could spend much of the remainder of his life in prison…

It is not clear what information Corsi could leverage to get a deal with prosecutors. However, he told the Daily Caller last week that prosecutors are focused on whether he had developed a source with inside information about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s plans.

Corsi said he did not have a direct source to the group. Instead, he said he developed a theory that Assange had access to hacked emails belonging to Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and that WikiLeaks would release them in October 2016.

He told the Daily Caller that he shared his prediction with many people, including Stone…

Much more detail at the link. Corsi’s defense, such as it is, seems to be that he’s an established fabulist whose aging memory is being mined as a weapon against much more significant criminals figures.

Roger Stone, of course, is happy to concur: “It is clear from his recent videos and his recent interviews that my friend Dr. Corsi has been under a tremendous amount of pressure and it is beginning to affect him profoundly. He has stated publicly that he is being asked over and over to say things he simply does not believe occurred.”

lol his signature on the plea deal will be the first thing written by jerome corsi anyone has enjoyed reading https://t.co/ssPj2EbXmk

— Mike Mullen (@mikemullen_) November 23, 2018

That’s not really fair, because Corsi’s ugly lies have brought pleasure to any number of ring-wing book buyers, at least a few of whom must have gone beyond hearing the laudatory Limbaugh/Fox News reviews to actually read their tomes.

To everyone who had to put up with their racist relatives this weekend, rejoice. Let them know their favorite author is about to flip on Trump. https://t.co/Jy9xODbR3k

— Zeddy (@Zeddary) November 23, 2018

no one, i mean NOT ONE of these tough-talking MAGA sycophants is actually gonna do extra time just to save Trump. At this point I bet even Stone starts a whirlwind 'I'm gonna come clean' tour before pleading out. He'll even make it work for his brand.

Really hope Roger Stone doesn’t get offered a plea bargain that doesn’t involve doing time.

On the other hand, I’m not sure god loves me enough for Roger Stone to be indicted anyway.

Assuming that there's something to the Jerome Corsi stories, Mueller indicting a conspiracy theorist for lying is a hell of a metaphor— Quinta Jurecic (@qjurecic) November 23, 2018

I think Jerome needs money. Mueller is well beyond him now.

Never forget, Corsi is the guy who is so dumb that he built an entire conspiracy theory based on the fact that he didn’t know that Barack Obama Jr. was named after his father. The Obama family in Kenya tried repeatedly to get Corsi to understand that the Barack Obama who was born in Kenya was the president’s father, but Corsi was unable to process that information.

I’ve known 5 yr olds who understand what the word junior at the end of someone’s name means. And yet he gets support from all the usual suspects because he’s such an idiot that he’ll repeat any bullshit he’s told and make up more bullshit on his own. Does anyone think that he’s got any idea what is true and what isn’t?

I’m wondering how all this fanatical lying about everything and nothing is going to end. So many people just believe the lying, because they want to and because it’s repeated so often by a circular bullshit manufacturing industry. It’s ruining the lives of millions, all so a few billionaires can add to the piles of money they can and will never spend. It’s insanity.

If Corsi is telling the truth about having no contacts within Wikileaks and just figuring out on his own that there would be a Podesta October surprise, then there is nothing prosecutors would need 40 hours with him to talk through and he wouldn’t fear prison time. Mueller obviously has documentation that this statement is bullshit.

    @Ruckus:

    It’s insanity.

It’s an ideology. By virtue of being rich they are therefore superior. The richer they are the more superior they are. Their wealth is the result of the workings of natural order (aka divine providence) and anything that detracts from that wealth is an unnatural perversion.

Therefore they feel an obligation to use that wealth to maintain this natural order.

It’s social darwinism. Which of course provides the basic ideological underpinnings of fascism.

I don’t think this is an attempt for a pardon. Trump never forgives a disloyalty and has no strategic sense. In addition advisors have probably explained how certain pardons would look like an addition of guilt. At this point I suspect there won’t be any pardons, even if they would help. Frankly, Trump is not generous or loyal and to stupid to get why he should be. Any pardons will be random to piss off the left or any enemies.
Corsi may just have encouraged this storie because his life’s experience has previously always benefitted by being in the news.

    So RWNJ W. Moron says:

Not one person can bring up a negative about Nancy it’s all blind worship. I don’t know how we constantly complain about how the DNC has no spine yet somehow Nancy, the leader, is not to be held accountable for it? Just odd is all just odd

How many lies and misunderstandings are there in this short exerpt? I didn’t extract it just to maximize the numbers, it’s just dropping off some whimpers.

First line: “Not one person can bring up a negative about Nancy…” How can he type this after the years of negative propaganda his party has pushed about Nancy Smash? All negative, all false, yet he doesn’t remember any of it? Amazing. Just amazed!

Second line: The DNC worked with Barack for his election, yet “the DNC has no spine.” Plus he dreams that Nancy Pelosi is the leader of the DNC? This is so not so! We would be in better shape if she was!

Pretty odd, alrite, as in IQ = shoe size for this bandit RWNJ! NO wonder these miracles of dumassery are hornswoggled by every con artist that comes down the pike!

ETA typo… son should be con artist!

When my husband was reading the Corsi article in the FTFNYT this morning, I mentioned that Corsi was the Swift Boat guy, and my husband correctly noted that there is not a single mention of that basis for Corsi’s fame in the entire article, nor is there any mention of his full throated support of the Obama birther conspiracy. It’s almost as if the New York Times has no memory at all.
