Edoras to the Milky Way

One of the important goals of our photographer in visiting New Zealand, other than jumping off of perfectly good bridges and out of perfectly good airplanes, is to visit filming locations of the Lord of the Rings movies. So today we visit what was the site of Edoras, while the set has been torn down, the view is quite amazing. Later we head over to the next valley to Lake Tekapo to prepare for taking the Milky Way pics that we’ve already enjoyed.

Mt. Sunday, South Island, New Zealand

Our photographer has arrived at the foot of Edoras in her trusty steed, aka a rental car, and is prepared to assault the heights of Edoras.

Before we climb the mighty mountain we must first cross the raging river(aka, small stream and there’s a bridge). A mighty mountain peak looms over the scene towards the north.

Our photographer rests before making the final assault on the the mountain.

Our photographer has vanquished Mt. Sunday, and it was on a Sunday.

If you remember the Milky Way pictures from Tekapo that were featured at this venue a few weeks ago, there was a church in the foreground. This is a daylight view of that church with Lake Tekapo in the background.

Thank you so much ?BillinGlendaleCA, do send us more when you can.

@rikyrah: Me too, but not sure I will make it. Gorgeous photos, Bill, tell the kid thanks.

@rikyrah: The kid really enjoyed her trip, and took some really good shots.

@Mary G: She saw the last two posts(Milky Way at Tekapo and Mt. Cook) that I put up for her on Thanksgiving. She was happy with them and everyone’s kind comments. She did wonder how I managed to figure out exactly where the pics were taken. I told her, ‘Google Maps is your friend’.

ETA: It’s a virtual certainty I’ll never make it there.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Wow, just wow. The question is begged, of course, who took the photographs of the intrepid traveler?

    Also too,

Our photographer rests before making the final assault on the the mountain.

This looks a lot like my assault on Half Dome: lots of resting!

    Well done!

@?BillinGlendaleCA: It’s doubtful that I’ll visit New Zealand, which is why it’s fun to see pictures of her travels. Tell her thanks.

    @HinTN:

who took the photographs of the intrepid traveler

For the kid’s birthday a couple of years ago, I got her a tripod.

This looks a lot like my assault on Half Dome: lots of resting!

From the looks of it, I think it’s a shorter hike. Did you start in Yosemite Valley or up above Nevada Falls, that’s were we started our hike up to Half Dome.

@JPL: We’re going to a Lantern Festival on Sunday, she’ll read this post then. She was really pleased that y’all liked her pics.
(She was also happy with dad’s processing work and narrative.)

ETA: There will probably be two more sets of pics from her travels.

I’ve been to that church! Sadly I didn’t get nearly enough time in that part of the world. Must. Go. Back.

Great pictures by the way. She learned well.

@arrieve: Only thing I taught her was Milky Way shots(she was talking about getting a new lens at Thanksgiving, so she’s caught the bug), the rest was all her’s.

Great photos. My sister included The lord of the rings on her trip to New Zealand.
I always tell people that ask me about going to Australia to plan enough time to stop on the way there and back for other stops at least one each way. Besides New Zealand there is Fiji and Tahiti, and Hawaii. Qantas has better prices if you book ahead and in Australia to fly to the Barrier Reef and to Melbourne. The trip is a long one and most people would not go back as easy as they would London and Europe.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: I started in the valley. Actually, I started with the goal of walking to Glacier Point and back on day 0 and to Half Dome on day 2. At the top of the falls where I had to choose I knew damn well I would make only one of those hikes and so chose Half Dome because you can drive to GP. Spent Day 1 with a bottle of wine and a chunk of cheese in the boardwalk in the middle of the valley. Got some funny looks, too.

@HinTN: We went from Glacier Point to the little valley above the falls and camped there as our base camp and than hiked to Half Dome. We hiked down to the Valley as the end of the trip, someone moved the cars from GP to the Valley.

@waratah: The kid started in Sydney and then flew to New Zealand after several days. She did the non-stop from LA to Sydney. She’s been to Hawaii, but not Fiji or Tahiti. Her mother and I have been to Tahiti and Moorea(3 times).
