    December 8, 2018 at 5:44 pm

@raven: My grandfather was a mustang. Lied about his age to join in the early 20s, age roughly 15. Served on a gunboat in the Yangtze River in China. Naval air in the Pacific before and during WWII – flew on the first regular US Mail flight to Guam, was present (luckily onshore) at Pearl Harbor. Retired in the late 50s and went on to a second career working on guided missiles at Raytheon, as a completely self-taught engineer. A bad-tempered, foul-mouthed, incredibly clever old bastard who hardly ever had a kind word to say but often did kind things. He was enormously proud of his son (my dad), a career Navy officer, and would have loved that my brother went on to serve in the Navy and that that brother’s daughter is now at the Naval Academy.
