Naval air in the Pacific before and during WWII – flew on the first regular US Mail flight to Guam, was present (luckily onshore) at Pearl Harbor. Retired in the late 50s and went on to a second career working on guided missiles at Raytheon, as a completely self-taught engineer. A bad-tempered, foul-mouthed, incredibly clever old bastard who hardly ever had a kind word to say but often did kind things. He was enormously proud of his son (my dad), a career Navy officer, and would have loved that my brother went on to serve in the Navy and that that brother’s daughter is now at the Naval Academy.

We had a nice talk and I felt comfortable asking. He said he was in his freshman year at the Academy and they were on a summer float in 75 and crossed into Dixie Station (I think) and he said the pretty much made him wear it.

Tidbit I found out in spring re:lacrosse, but may be more widely aapplicable. Army & Navy are self-funded/endowed, AF is not. If there’s a gvt shutdown AF lax shuts down, Army & Navy don’t.

Yes! I was away from Baltimore when the Ravens arrived, and so my memories of football rivalries are ancient history (Colts vs. Patriots, in the ’70s and ’80s). Nowadays, though, the Baltimore friends I’ve reconnected with from high school tell me that if I come back with black and gold gear they’ll disown me. :-)

I wonder how the NCAA champion rifle team from WVU would do in that. They have more championships than any service academy.
