Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

It’s a new day. Light all those Biden polls of young people on fire and throw away the ashes.

No Justins, No Peace

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Republicans would impeach Biden if he bit into a whole Kit Kat rather than breaking the sections apart.

Israel is using food as a weapon of war. Unforgivable.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

I’m more Christian than these people and I’m an atheist.

There is one struggling party in US right now, and it’s not the Democrats.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

The gop couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

The choice is between normal and crazy.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

The current Supreme Court is a rogue court. Very dangerous.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you don’t.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

The Shitgoblin on Twitter, two hours ago:

The Democrats, who know Steel Slats (Wall) are necessary for Border Security, are putting politics over Country. What they are just beginning to realize is that I will not sign any of their legislation, including infrastructure, unless it has perfect Border Security. U.S.A. WINS!

The Shitgoblin on Twitter, one hour ago:

With so much talk about the Wall, people are losing sight of the great job being done on our Southern Border by Border Patrol, ICE and our great Military. Remember the Caravans? Well, they didn’t get through and none are forming or on their way. Border is tight. Fake News silent!

So, if the Shitgoblin doesn’t get US taxpayer money for the “Steel Slats” that Mexico was supposed to/is paying for, the Shitgoblin will veto popular, job-creating legislation. But oh by the way, diseased brown hordes were repelled and the border is somehow tight without “Steel Slats.”

No sane person expects logical consistency from Trump, but it does seem like the cycle of contradictory lies is accelerating. Pelosi and Schumer probably did a double high-five and then a flying chest bump when they saw the tweet about holding legislation hostage for the vanity wall. Bring it, mofo.

    so the border is tight and nobody’s getting in, but we need a wall built to make the border secure. and somehow “steel slats” are like garlic to the vampiric brown hordes.

    Quoting Stephen King’s The Stand, quoting Yeats:

    Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    Trump is truly the manifestation of “mere anarchy” and his “center” (ego) is not holding.

    Trump’s AG pick, Bill Barr, sent an unsolicited 20-page memo to the Justice Department this year excoriating Mueller’s obstruction of justice investigation. He apparently told Trump about the memo and said it could come up during his confirmation hearings. https://t.co/tw2NcKAjHt

    Never expect logic or consistency from a moronic narcissist. With the exception of, he will be consistent that everything is about him. These two tweets are examples, he’s winning and that’s all that matters. To him, to the country, to the world. Reality is an unknown system to him, as the entire world rotates about the stick up his butt. He ran for King of the World, not president. In his mind, King of the World is his right, president is just a job, and he doesn’t do those.

    BEIRUT — America’s Kurdish allies in Syria are discussing the release of 3,200 Islamic State prisoners, a prominent monitoring group and a Western official of the anti-Islamic State coalition said Thursday, a day after President Trump ordered the withdrawal of all American troops from the country.

    Top officials of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the Kurdish-led and American-supported militia fighting the Islamic State in eastern Syria, met Wednesday to discuss the option of releasing about 1,100 Islamic State fighters and 2,080 relatives of the group’s members, according to Rami Abdul Rahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory on Human Rights.

    Evidently Trump’s also tweeting this morning that his decision to remove US troops from Syria is brilliant because this now means that Russia/Iran/Syria will be fighting ISIS directly and killing each other. This of course flies in the face of his victory lap yesterday that the US had defeated ISIS in Syria. What an ass.

    All in all it’s just another shtick for the wall.

    Shifting gears, some rarely trudged out cubic zirconia on TCM this holiday weekend.

    Saturday at 4:15 a.m., Santa Claus, bizarre Mexican cheaploitation flick. From TCM’s site;

    …Santa Claus is a jaw-dropping Christmas caper that pits Kris Kringle (Jos Elas Moreno) against an agent of Satan known as Pitch (Jos Luis Aguirre), who is intent upon tarnishing the Yuletide. Dividing the action between Earth, the heavens (Santa occupies a cloud-straddling castle cum Fortress of Solitude) and deep in the bowels of Hell (where horned demons with beatnik goatees caper like Fosse dancers as the damned trudge mournfully to tarnation), Santa Claus is all the more strange for honoring a holiday not at all native to Mexico.…
    [snip]
    …for all its discomfiting elements and racist embroideries, [this] candied extravaganza was intended as family entertainment and remains all the more transgressive for the sincerity of its approach.

    Monday at 6:00 a.m., Beyond Tomorrow. Sappier than Vermont in the spring, nevertheless an opportunity to see character actor stalwarts Charles Winninger, C. Aubrey Smith and Harry Carey co-shoulder lead roles, in a veritable deluge of contrived holiday fluff sprinkled with a touch of the morbid.

    @NotMax: Have you ever seen “Happyland” the Don Ameche film?

    In a typical American Midwestern city, Hartfield, Iowa, Lew Marsh (Don Ameche) is the owner of a drugstore. Everyone knows Lew and knew his grandfather, old “Gramp” Marsh (Harry Carey), who had passed on. One evening, Lew and his wife, Agnes (Frances Dee), reminisce lovingly about their son, “Rusty” (Richard Crane), when a telegram arrives from the Navy Department informing them that “Rusty” had been killed in action. Lew becomes bitter, avoids people, refuses to go near the family drugstore. “Gramp” appears before Lew and takes him in hand and together, they revisit the past: Lew’s childhood; “Gramp” as a Civil War veteran; Lew’s courtship of Agnes; the birth of “Rusty”; Lew as a WWI soldier; Rusty’s boyhood days and into his attempt to decide between Lenore Prentiss and Gretchen Barry, and how Lenore becomes his girl just before he joins the Navy. This excursion into the past takes away Lew’s bitterness and he now sees what America means.

    This corrupt dictator thug is lecturing on democracy?

    Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has accused the UK and US political classes of “disrespecting” the public by questioning the Brexit referendum and Donald Trump’s election.

    “They don’t want to recognise [President Trump’s] victory. That’s disrespect of voters,” Mr Putin said.

    “It’s the same in Britain: Brexit happened, but nobody wants to implement it.”

    The president’s comments came at his year-end press conference in Moscow.

    Russia’s leader also said British Prime Minister Theresa May has no choice but to follow through with Brexit, as failing to do so would undermine UK democracy.

    “She must enact the will of the people, expressed during the referendum,” he said. “Or otherwise it is not a referendum at all: doing it over and over again if someone did not like it [the result]. Is it a democracy?”

    Just in: Conservative Revolt Endangers Deal to Avoid a Shutdown

    A deal to avert a Christmastime government shutdown teetered on Thursday amid growing anger from President Trump and a conservative revolt in the House that could block a bill to keep funds flowing past midnight Friday.

    House Republicans emerged from a conference meeting Thursday morning disgruntled and without a guarantee from the leadership that the president would support a bill that would extend the government funding for nine federal departments past the Friday midnight deadline and into early February. The White House called an emergency meeting with House Republicans for noon.

    You’ll be happy to know that legend-in-his-own-mind Paul Ryan is showing his brand of True House Leadership as his term winds down:

    Mr. Trump, following a phone call with Speaker Paul D. Ryan, Republican of Wisconsin, indicated on Twitter that he was frustrated with the limitations of the stopgap spending bill, which both Democratic leaders endorsed.
    Mr. Ryan abruptly canceled a news conference after the phone call.

    Re “unmasking”: When foreign officials are under surveillance, and they communicate with Americans, the identity of those Americans is kept “masked” unless there is a reason to reveal the names internally. Susan Rice was asked about unmasking in the context of her efforts to find out about a meeting in New York in December 2016 with the crown prince of the UAE. She told the House investigators that yes, she asked that the names be “unmasked” — they turned out to be Trump team people (Flynn, Kushner, and Bannon) — but she did not leak the names. See this CNN report.
    Some people who don’t get it continue to insist that “unmasking” is some kind of crime in all cases.

    @dmsilev: That dead-eyed zombie motherfucker has some plans. He hasn’t said shit against Trump on the way out. Not a fucking word. Not a word about anything, really. He’s obviously “keeping his options open” and that’s unfortunate; I’d prefer to never see him in public again.

    Anybody know what Ozark Hillbilly’s been up to?

    HOUSE SPRINGS, Mo. — A tiny house that was reported missing from south St. Louis was found Wednesday morning, officials confirmed.

    The Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak reported the tiny house was found — of all places — in House Springs.

    @Jerzy Russian:

    Where does this figure of $5 billion come from?

    When DJ Trump uses numbers, they are usually to add emotional support to his rhetoric, or to support his ego, or both. They seldom have much to do with real reality, and more to do with supporting a reality that he is trying to manufacture.
    I have a special loathing for this sort of lying. (Mind you, my father who worked as a project manager in the big-construction industry could estimate the cost of a new building project to within 5 percent just knowing square footage and local labor rates. The company avoided dealing with people like DJ Trump though.)

    @Elizabelle:
    I clicked the link, and Der Spiegel demanded of me, “Bitte deaktivieren Sie Ihren Adblocker!” To which my response is usually, “Beiß mich!”

    @Amir Khalid: Yeah. That’s a pain. I deactivated mine, briefly, and then right back on.

    Putin continues to paint himself as the Good Cop versus Trump’s Bad Cop schtick.

    MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a chilling warning Thursday about the rising threat of a nuclear war, saying “it could lead to the destruction of civilization as a whole and maybe even our planet” — and putting the blame squarely on the U.S.

    Speaking at his annual news conference, Putin scoffed at Western claims he wants to dominate the world and said Western countries are antagonizing Russia for their own domestic reasons, and at their own peril. He dismissed claims of Russian interference abroad, from a nerve agent poisoning in Britain to an alleged effort to infiltrate the U.S. National Rifle Association.

    @Elizabelle: Comments to story are ‘interesting’. American RWers say authors are anti-Trump and feel selves superior to their Trum.p voting neighbors. Germans attack what they claim to is ‘Spiegel’s long running blatant leftist bias’

    So A merican and German conservatives attack Spiegel’s ‘leftist’ editorial policy and the authors’ unwillingness to bow down to Trump and his supporters. So win-win for prevalence of rising revival of fascism, with voices from ‘Hitler’s fatherland of Blut und Boden worldviiew???
