Today, a place still near the top of my bucket list. Just incredible – I mean – wow! Truly a wonder.
Today, pictures from valued commenter Big R.
Last week I spent the weekend in Jordan with a law school classmate who’s been touring the Middle East. We went to the one place everyone goes in Jordan.

The Royal Tombs, which were part archaeological site, part souk, and part residence?

I climbed a whole ass mountain for this picture, so you are going to appreciate it. (Seriously, the main site is in a canyon, but the Monastery is at the top of a mountain. At the back of the site. It’s literally a 12k round trip from the gate to the Monastery and back.)

I have so many more pictures from Petra, and last night I finally got to the Western Wall on a day when they allow pictures, so those will come soon as well.
Thank you so much Big R, do send us more when you can.
Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

WOW! Thanks, this is on my bucket list Great to see it like this
Big R
@satby: Not just 6km, but the last 2km involves climbing 850 steps ascending from the canyon floor to the top of the mountain.

A lot of those monasteries were up mountains – lots of raids on monastic wealth?

I very much appreciate your wonderful photos, thank you.

I knew nothing about Petra until now. These photos win the #1 Awesome Award from me. Also amazing that (if Google is right) this was built in the first century B.C.! What an achievement!
Betty
Beautiful and amazing sight.

Petra. Reminds me of a wonderful octogenarian I knew. Sailed around the world with her son on a packet ship when she was 79 because the age cutoff is 80. Always wanted to see Petra, but it’s quite impossible for someone who depends on a walker.
It is spectacular. Audacious, really. (Like Alma, and I need to find out if she is still in this world.)

Awesome! Thanks for sharing these with us!
Interestingly, as a child my parents had good friends, sisters who were experienced teachers, one was French and English AND served as acting Super of Schools, the other was head librarian for the high school library. Every summer they traveled, everywhere, and had slides to show for all those trips, all over the world.
Including pretty close dupes of these photos, as they visited Petra 60 or 80 years ago. ON camels to boot. Same for Egypt on another trip, camels to the Valley of Tombs. Many other ancient and modern places. They were real students of human history, and then taught what they learned to anyone who was interested. I will never catch up to them as far as traveling goes, I’m starting way too late, and they lasted a very long time.
Thanks again for sharing with us, splendid work!!

Oh thank you for the arduous trek to bring us these wonderful pictures. Petra has been on my wishlist for decades since learning about the “rose-red city, half as old as time”.

I also have always longed to see Petra, and never had the physical ability. Thanks for doing the hike and climb so I can see it through your eyes.
TomatoQueen
Wow, thank you for doing all the work so I can see Petra while sitting down. Stunning.
