Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Second rate reporter says what?

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

When we show up, we win.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Everyone is in a bubble, but some bubbles model reality far better than others!

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

“Why isn’t this Snickers bar only a nickel?”

Come on, man.

“But what about the lurkers?”

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Be a traveling stable for those who can’t find room at the inn.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

The choice is between normal and crazy.

White supremacy is terrorism.

It’s time once again to continue a tradition started by Jon Swift/Al Weisel, the “Best Posts of the Year, Chosen by the Bloggers Themselves.” Jon/Al left behind some wonderful satire, but was also a nice guy and a strong supporter of small blogs. (Here’s Jon/Al’s 2007 and 2008 editions.  Our revivals from 2010 through 2017 can be found here.)

If you’d like to participate, just reply to this e-mail or write to me (Batocchio9 AT yahoo DOT com) with your best post of the year before 12/25:

Blog Name
Title of Post
Link
Author of Post
Brief Description/Pitch of the Post (1–2 sentences)

(If it’s not a reply, adding “best post” in the subject line would also help.)

To modify Jon Swift’s 2008 solicitation:

I would be very honored if you would participate and send me a link to what you think was your best post of [2018], along with a short description of it.  Please make the hard choice and send me only one link.  I would like to post it before the end of the year, so if you could get it to me before Christmas, I would really appreciate it.

One submission per blog, please, otherwise things can get messy. Group bloggers can pick a piece among themselves, but are also welcome to submit their work via their individual blogs, if they have them.

As usual, I’m aiming to find the right balance between “inclusive” and “manageable.”  If you know a few excellent blogs (preferably on the smaller side) that you suspect might not be on my radar, feel free to send me their website address (and contact info, if you have it).

The 2007 and 2008 links forward to a dead end that offers to sell me the domain name “blogrolling.com”

Hi everyone, as Derelict noted, the 2007 and 2008 Jon Swift links redirect, unfortunately. I’ve fixed them for the post-in-the-works.

Please feel free to nominate a best post of the year for Balloon Juice. But as usual, if you have your own blog, please feel free to write me to submit your best post of the year, or post it in this thread. I’ll be checking back from time to time.

Thanks to Doug for starting a thread!

I nominate anything by Tom Levenson. The art alone makes them my favorites, but then, there’s all that wryness to enjoy.

Can I just chime in here and thank whoever suggested The Bloggess’ post about Beyonce the metal chicken from a few years ago? I laughed so hard at that post and had never heard of her before. So a hearty “Thank You” to whoever that was.

Cheryl Rofer’s post below this one, Holiday Nuclear War Talk, should be one the list as a extremely timely post, given the person who is supposed to be in charge, and who is anything but, because while timely it is also extremely necessary because we’ve gone over to the dark side too often in this country, in this century alone, without any sort of big picture of why we do the dangerous and foolish things we do. We can’t make reasonable changes in our system until we have several discussions on this topic and others like it.

I already emailed my blog post from Notice a Trend. It’s not much but it’s the angriest one I got.
