Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!
So sorry I missed yesterday – I am fighting a cold and melted under its assault. No hero, me.
On a very significant personal note, I saw (and roped in 5 family members!) for Thursday’s showing of They Shall Not Grow Old. It was something I will never forget seeing on the big screen. It was a limited engagement but it looks like the documentary will get wider distribution and I cannot recommend anything more highly – see it!
Watch the trailer, remark at the young wasted and yet valiant from 100 years ago. I felt a duty to see this on the big screen and I encourage you to go, do the same. It’s not as grim as you may think, and wow, the transition from traditional B&W(shaky, fuzzy footage) to enhanced shake-free color with sound and incredible depth of field. It was like the transition in the Wizard of Oz, but even more, so much more. I gasped – on the big screen in a theater with high-quality sound, it was amazing. From there, you begin to really connect to so many young men, it’s overwhelming. Just wow. See it.
Have a good weekend, everybody – frolic with a light mind cuz things will get funky in the new year!

A few of you liked the previous icicle crop so here are some of my favorite, these lace-like sheets from the metal roof. Western Montana is not the winter horror most people think of, that’s east of the divide. Our weather comes via Seattle instead of the Yukon so we often have winter highs right around freezing. This allows the snow/ice to creep slowly down the roof and then refreeze at night.

Hope the holidays were good to my fellow jackals and don’t forget to fax your credenzas in ’19.
Thank you so much realbtl, do send us more when you can.

Love the icicles! I’ve been considering a trip to Greenland and having frozen places look appealing may tip the scales in favor of going.

After confusedly thinking this couldn’t be Friday again, I took a look at these photos. The second one is my favorite: Lacy icicles deserves a place of honor in the world of oxymorons.

Seconding the recommendation of They Shall Not Grow Old. It’s beautiful, eye-opening, heart wrenching, and funny. Also strongly recommend Peter Jackson’s short about the restoration process. For example, it was astounding how alive and contemporary these young men became when the exact correct film speed was chosen. (They has found that the camera speeds had been all over the place.)

Thanks Alain, for posting this set of silly icy photos even tho it isn’t a weekday. We won’t hold you to it!
And to be clear it isn’t the photo that’s silly, it’s the sheets of icicles…
