Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

So a couple of days ago Mueller’s grand jury was extended for 6 more months, but today his report will be submitted by early March. How many freakin’ timelines are we living in, anyhow?

Meanwhile, Lord Pissypants is throwing another tantrum:

After congressional Democratic and Republican leadership met with President Donald Trump Wednesday afternoon, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said that Trump called the meeting a “waste of his time” and walked out after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said she didn’t agree with his desired border wall.

“Unfortunately, the President just got up and walked out,” Schumer said, standing alongside Pelosi outside the White House. “He asked Speaker Pelosi, ‘Will you agree to my wall?’ She said ‘No.’ And he just got up and said, ‘Then we have nothing to discuss.’ and he just walked out.”

The Senate minority leader added: “Again, we saw a temper tantrum because he couldn’t get his way, and he just walked out of the meeting.”

Indeed, but how would that work with the shutdown?

OK, sure, Trump might be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, but would he fold his hand and open the government back up? Fuck no, he’d have the shittiest of shit fits. He might start flinging poo off the Truman Balcony.

This sort of makes me think that Rosenstein is gonna break with that DOJ Memo and has approved Mueller INDICTING a sitting President.

Neither Mueller nor Rosenstein are likely to break with this longstanding DOJ policy. What’s more likely is that if Mueller could lay out clear grounds for future indictment of Trump once out of office, or else has obtained an indictment under seal that won’t be unsealed until after Trump leaves office.

Of course, the issues of whether Trump has committed indictable / impeachable offenses will still be on the table for potential inclusion in Mueller’s report. If so, expect great noise and friction among the House, the DOJ, and Trump about release of that particular info.

Preet said on Monday that they have already been in session for 18 months, and that 24 months is pretty much the limit. After that you have to start with a new grand jury. So I imagine they asked for the classic 6 months, knowing that no matter what, that would be their end game.

So Trump says he won’t open the government unless he gets his wall. He is offering nothing in return. Hardly a negotiation. Of course the GOP states the Dems are refusing to negotiate because they won’t promise the wall.

Somebody yesterday on the radio station I was listening to said why don’t the Dems just give him some money, say 1.5 billion. My response to that is, even though he would probably go along with it, it is like a negotiation with a toddler. They want something and scream and scream and finally a parent says “Okay, just this once.” That never ever works.

Forget the part where the Dem base would be in an uproar.

    3) fully fund the ACA
    4) sign the bills that we give you to sign
    5) remove Brett Kavanaugh from the bench
    6) sign off on DACA protection
    7) grant asylum to all entrants that are not on a terrorist watch list
    8) get those kids out of cages and back with their parents
    9) apologize to them

Then we’ll appropriate money for a wall after we get done with environmental studies and handling land purchases at a fair price from their current owners and we work out a system to handle the tribal lands with policing their own reservations.

Why the RWNJs are so frightened of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez:

More than simply a leftist to be opposed, Ocasio-Cortez has joined Barack Obama as a focus of the very same fear and anger that elected Trump in the first place. She represents the prospect of a more progressive, diverse America where those who were once deprived of power and influence can shape the course of the nation and its politics. The story of her family’s working-class roots in the Bronx is both specific enough to be compelling and universal enough for anyone, including many voters in Trump’s base, to relate to. And that’s precisely why her story, like Obama’s, must be discredited.

    @Elizabelle:

That DOJ memo may not be worth the paper it’s printed on. It was drafted for a self-serving purpose. And why would an agency memo have more weight than the US Constitution? Or criminal charges against a criminal president?

The DOJ policy regarding no indictment of a sitting president was created on Oct 16, 2000 (i.e. in the waning days of Bill Clinton’s administration, and before the Nov 2000 Presidential election) – and long predated the Trump Administration. True, its existence is very convenient for Trump, but it wasn’t a creation of his Administration.

True also that whether this c.2000 originated DOJ policy is actually sound legal principle or would be upheld by the courts is questionable – but the key for practical purposes is that Mueller regards himself as bound by DOJ policy, so the product of his investigation could cast Trump as an unindicted co-conspirator, or possibly even obtain an indictment under seal that only becomes active once Trump leaves office – but unless Mueller changes his mind or (even less likely) the current incarnation of the DOJ reverses itself on the policy – no currently effective indictment will result, at least not on any federal criminal charges.

    @cmorenc:

I think the decision is going to heavily depend on what crimes Mueller has found. It would be sophistry of the highest order for DOJ to say, Yes, we have evidence that the president conspired directly with the Russians to change votes and fix the election, but we can’t prosecute him because he’s the PRESIDENT!

@WaterGirl: That makes sense. Still, not convinced the media’s sources really know when Mueller will be finished this time, either. This will take the time it takes.

O/T Old, dumb ass conservatives are, really dumb ass

Old people may have the worst internet journalism literacy, according to common sense, and partially backed up by new research on the spread of so-called “fake news” immediately before and after 2016 presidential election.

A study published today in the Science Advances journal suggests that elderly Facebook users in the U.S. were far more likely to share false and misleading news stories than any other age group.

The study, conducted by researchers at New York University and Princeton University, focused on Facebook activity in the months surrounding the election. …

The study found that more than 90 percent of participants didn’t share any links from the sites included in the “fake news” list. But most people who did share articles on the “fake news” list were older than 65.

The results also show that people who identified as Republican and conservative were more likely to share false and misleading stories than Democrats and liberals (18 percent versus 3.5 percent). However—while researchers did try to remove partisan websites from their list (like Breitbart)—many of the websites included on the list were being used to spread pro-Trump and anti-Clinton propaganda.

@Brachiator: OMG this is so true. My husband is a part of a Whatsapp family group. Guess who shares the most bullshit memes and is responsible for most forwarded messages in the group about a dozen people? His 80 year old uncle. He was in the news business too, he worked for the All India Radio before he retired.
