Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Republicans don’t trust women.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

We still have time to mess this up!

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

The willow is too close to the house.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Chutkan laughs. Lauro sits back down.

As long as McCarthy is Speaker, the House will never be in order.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Bark louder, little dog.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Let there be snark.

Cincinnati Meet-Up This Monday, January 14?

Got a request from commentor Ohio Mom:

Can you put up a post about the meet-up in Cincinnati this Monday, January 14th? The inspiration is Steve in the ATL’s trip to the suburb of Blue Ash.

We had one preliminary post a couple of days ago but we only got as far as deciding on Monday (rather than Tuesday). We still need to hash out a time and a place.

I suggested Slatts Pub on Cooper near Kenwood in downtown Blue Ash. There’s a parking lot and it shouldn’t be too hard for people to find — just to the east of the strip mall with the Walgreen’s. But if someone has a different idea, that’s fine. We just need to nail this thing down.

There are a couple of other issues. One, it’s supposed to snow six inches this weekend, though I’m optimistic about the roads being mostly clear by Monday night. But maybe others don’t want to risk it.

Also, CarolDuhart2 needs a ride. Cintibud offered to give her a lift but I don’t have anyone’s email.

Anyone wants to get in contact directly, send me a message at annelaurie (dot) bj (at) gmail (dot) com, and I’ll forward it.

    @Pogonip:

That is one of America’s great zoos. I’m hoping to drive from the ATL to Owen Sound, Ontario, later this spring, and if I time things right I can work in an overnight in CIN and a visit to the zoo. Maybe even a meetup? We’ll see how timing and itineraries work out.

Is this a politics-free zone? WaPo:

President Trump has gone to extraordinary lengths to conceal details of his conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, including on at least one occasion taking possession of the notes of his own interpreter and instructing the linguist not to discuss what had transpired with other administration officials, current and former U.S. officials said.

Trump did so after a meeting with Putin in 2017 in Hamburg that was also attended by then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. U.S. officials learned of Trump’s actions when a White House adviser and a senior State Department official sought information from the interpreter beyond a readout shared by Tillerson.

The constraints that Trump imposed are part of a broader pattern by the president of shielding his communications with Putin from public scrutiny and preventing even high-ranking officials in his own administration from fully knowing what he has told one of the United States’ main adversaries.

It is very short notice, but I am out in Denver for business and will be free this coming Tuesday evening (1/15) after 7PM or so. I am staying in the heart of downtown and would love to get a drink or two with any Juiciers who are in the neighborhood. I don’t think I have made a meetup since July 2013 in Seattle, so would love to get a chance to see any folks!

TSA workers can expect a paycheck this week as their boss gives them a bonus

Transportation Security Administration workers who manned checkpoints on Dec. 22 will be paid, despite the federal shutdown that began the previous day, and they also will receive a $500 bonus for working during the busy Christmas season.

The payment for work that Saturday and the bonus money are an effort by TSA Administrator David P. Pekoske to soften the blow to his workers and encourage them to remain on the job after they missed their first paycheck on Friday.

The bonus and an estimated $150 to $200 in Saturday pay should be received by TSA workers early next week.

The American Federation of Government Employees, which represents unionized TSA workers, warned for more than a week that its members would be unable to get to their jobs if they didn’t get paid.

The TSA reported that 5.6 percent of its 51,000 workers did not show up on Friday, compared to a 3.3 percent who had unscheduled absences on Jan. 13, 2018.

    […]

The FAA’s air traffic controllers, who make substantially more money than TSA workers, have promised to remain on the job despite the lack of pay, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) said Friday.

“NATCA would not condone or endorse any type of activity like that. We have taken an oath and we provide service to the American public,” said Trish Gilbert, NATCA’s executive vice president. “We know we’re important to the United States economy, and we are going to work. We’re just not getting paid. So, even if this drags on, people will continue to come to work.”

A documentary like no other I have ever seen before.

A real story of real women who only wanted this: Home.

So, even though it was forbidden, after Chernobyl, they snuck back in and returned to a place that brings them soft comfort of familiarity. Connectedness with their land. A familiarity so deep and profound that it tethers them to their homeland even in the face of radioactive poisoning.

Their communities gone, they are joyful for the company of the film makers as they share their life stories, tell jokes and even sing.

    These women are pillars.

Pillars of strength, determination and endurance.

Within them lives a fierce loyalty coupled with a sadness from lack of visitors…though they mask it well, actually.

Trump and the Republicans were more than happy to note an “illegal” was responsible for the murder of Officer Singh in Newman, CA, an officer who immigrated from Fiji. Never mind that “illegal” had warrants and should have been in the slam.

What will they have to say, I wonder, about the apparent assassination of Officer Corona in Davis, CA, now that the murderer turns out to be a 48 YO white dude who was ordered by the court to surrender his AR-15 last year after a battery conviction. Officer Corona, 22, was the daughter of a career cop who–wait for it–immigrated from Mexico.

My heart breaks for her family; she looks like any of a dozen of my kid’s soccer buddies and was evidently a go-getting overachiever who grew up laser-focused on emulating her father and becoming a cop. We all want her, young women like her, Officer Singh and others to join our law enforcement ranks. Who wants to, knowing we have tens of millions of angry people armed to the teeth?

The former White House adviser Omarosa Manigault Newman claims in her forthcoming memoir that she once saw President Donald Trump eating a piece of paper in the Oval Office, The Washington Post reported Friday, citing excerpts it obtained.
In the book, “Unhinged,” Manigault Newman said she saw Trump chewing up a piece of paper given to him by his former lawyer Michael Cohen, The Post said.

I just watched a Cowboys offensive lineman sack Zak Prescott (his own qb). I applaud his initiative.

The ones from the late 60s? I’ve read a little about them. Unfortunately, there have always been conservative elements in the labor movement

Today: Trump took interpreter’s notes from private Putin meeting and forbad her to talk about anything (per The Hill and WaPo)

    They notes have been leaked.

he’s putting on quite a show, this is just one of the highlights

    Maggie Haberman @ maggieNYT
Trump now urging prosecutors to investigate MichaelCohen212’s father again. Jeanine asks for the name of the father in law. This is a really stunning way for the president to target a private citizen.

“…that Bezos, who’s got bigger problems than anybody right now,” Trump says. Weird – didn’t Bill Shine just have the WaPo in for an interview recently?

he’s practically begging people to start talking about his own divorces

Other times there's been a "revelation" that Trump is a Russian agent. When he:
    * Asked Russia for HRC emails
    * Gave secrets to Russians in Oval after firing Comey
    * Prostrated himself in Helsinki
    * Used Trump Tower as a Russian mafia dorm
Ask why no one who could stop him did

More from gregpmiller: US officials monitor Kremlin intercepts to try to figure out what happened in meetings between our president and Putin. Intercepts are not always widely discussed because they contain insults about Trump and Kushner. Awkward.

Another bombshell story. In light of all the publicly reported information so far, it is time to ask @realDonaldTrump a simple question.

Mr. President: Are you a #RussianAsset?

Yup, it’s high time this question is asked publicly and repeatedly, especially of every rethug senator.

Rochester, NY, and area needs a meet up also. Days, dates, and times to be determined. I liked the Tap and Mallet and I really enjoyed meeting the intellectual elite of the area formerly known as Roch-cha-cha, now Roc-this or that.
