Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

We still have time to mess this up!

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Let there be snark.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

In my day, never was longer.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Submit Your Photos

Good Morning All,

On The Road and In Your Backyard is a weekday feature spotlighting reader submissions. From the exotic to the familiar, please share your part of the world, whether you’re traveling or just in your locality. Share some photos and a narrative, let us see through your pictures and words. We’re so lucky each and every day to see and appreciate the world around us!

Submissions from commenters are welcome at tools.balloon-juice.com

Again, we’re blessed with amazing pictures from Africa – enjoy!

I had the pleasure of feeding a lion cub a warm bottle of milk, like a baby, when I was an early teen and traveling with my dad on his work trip in Africa. Just an amazing experience, but now I’d rather see them from afar and appreciate their wildness.

We’ll wrap up Le Comte’s submissions next Tuesday.

Today, pictures from valued commenter Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes.

Continued

They hunt around sundown and relax during the day

This was another tour vehicle – it shows how close we were

Another yawn

This guy was glorious

She was a favorite of mine

Continued

This was the leader of another pride

Some shots are just perfect

He just came out to stand…

He’s moving, as a rhino has come into view.

Rhinos and lions are not inclined to share the same space, and what the rhino wants, it gets.

The lighting was perfect for this frame

Continued

Every sunset was stunning

This guy was a little shy

This is a termite mound – this leopard is using it as a lookout

The tail may be longer than this youngster

They were having too much fun

Thank you so much Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes, do send us more when you can.

Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

    I’m afraid there’s no denyin’ I’m just a dandelion,
    A fate I don’t deserve.
But I could show my prowess, be a lion not a mowess
If I only had the nerve

I like the bird hanging out on the rhino’s back. They are all phenomenal photos, but the elephants messing around in the water are my favorite.

After my one trip to Kenya and a cool tenting Safari what I wished for most was a morning where you would just park and hang out for a few hours in one place, seeing the normal activity rather than what we had done which was pretty much rushing from sighting to sighting.

    Very cool photos though!

All of the animals are wonderful, but that photo of the young leopard with the tail curling made me laugh out loud. Great photo!

nice. i was contemplating the long zoom lens you must have had, then saw how close the vehicles get. kind of scary, those cats can move very quickly when they want to.

Ah, what glorious beings! Love the leopard, but they all take the breath away with their presence. Hoping you have more.

    These pictures are absolutely GORGEOUS.
I would be terrified to be that close to them though.

    Stunning.

Between the poachers and the trophy hunters, I hope all of these beautiful species survive.

    @lurker dean:

There was one leopard that came up too close for me to get a photo – zoom was attached and I didn’t want to move, or breath or blink – had I leaned out a bit, I could have touched him. After it passed, the guide asked me how I was doing, given how close it was.

One other thing – the company we were using mounts only two people per seat as opposed to three – made for a lot more comfort.
