Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

No one could have predicted…

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

I really should read my own blog.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Consistently wrong since 2002

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

I was promised a recession.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Today, pictures from valued commenter Snarlymon.

My girlfriend and I decided to treat ourselves to celebrate our birthdays. This cruise included 2 days in Cuba which was the most interesting part of the trip. These pictures are from Havana, a paradoxical city of tremendous beauty and decrepitness.

Havana

We woke up to see the coast of Cuba gliding past or state room window. We entered the port just as the day was dawning.

Havana

Our visa was a P2P visa that required us to take a tour before we could explore on our own. Our first stop was the Habana Compas Dance company, which is an independent group that mixes Spanish flamenco, African rhythm, Cuban music into a unique percussive dance style. The chair is central to the group’s identity as the troupe would use the chair to practice drumming and then started incorporating them into their choreography. It was a great start to our tour.

Fusterlandia- Havana

Our next stop was Jose Fuster‘s whimsical neighborhood that has become known as Fusterlandia. Fuster began decorating his own home with mosaic tiles in a colorful childlike style heavily influenced by Picasso. He spread his work throughout the neighborhood until the area became an artist colony and a well known tourist attraction. It’s also true that you see the 50s cars everywhere in Havana. This beautiful 57 Buick convertible we’re sitting right outside I’ve Fuster’s home.

Havana

Lunch was served in this beautiful colonial era courtyard and included the Cuba libre.

Havana

We crossed under the harbor to tour the fortress and see the world’s longest cigar, then viewed the sun setting over the city. It was a long day but we still had plans to experience more of this intriguing city

Thank you so much Snarlymon, do send us more when you can.

Fascinating and beautiful photos. It is a bit out of time and I’m glad you were able to go there. Thanks, Obama!

Thank you for the pictures. Fusterlandia was new to me so I googled in order to see more pictures. It’s whimsy on roids. Surprisingly trump hasn’t stopped issuing travel visas to Cuba.

    @JPL:

Surprisingly trump hasn’t stopped issuing travel visas to Cuba.

Shhh. Don’t say anything out loud about that, or you’ll give him ideas.

Oh to be having my morning coffee in a sunny courtyard in Havana instead of bitterly cold New York. Fusterlandia looks wonderful! I hope to get to Cuba someday….

So was that a cruise out of Miami or ? We’re not into big boat cruising so much, but to Cuba, that sounds good.

Is it OK if I deposit this here for the Great Dane fans? If I wait I’ll forget about it.

The Cruise was out of Fort Lauderdale on a smallish Holland America ship called the Veendam.

Thank you I have always wanted to see Cuba. We were able to see more of the islands in the Mediterranean with a cruise on a smaller ship, to have a taste to see where we would like more. Sailing in to ports was one of the best experiences.

@snarlymon: Beautiful photos, thanks snarlymon! Cuba is on my bucket list.
And I’m now in Aguascalientes Mexico, a bit off the beaten path for tourists. Had a wonderful dinner with my younger exchange son’s extended family (like 20 people!), delicious home cooked traditional meal and lots of conversation, most of which could be summed up as “Trump, WTF America?”
