Apparently, what I saw here on the East Coast was a pale imitation. Just…wow.

Lunar Eclipse
This month’s full moon was is known as the Wolf Moon, it was also a super moon(the moon’s a bit closer in its obit of the Earth, so a bit larger and brighter) AND it was the occasion of a lunar eclipse. I had intended to shoot the eclipse in my yard with my sky tracker, but the organizer of the local photography meetup decided to schedule a meetup for the occasion in the hills above Dodger Stadium. The conditions were not predicted to be great due to cloud cover, but the clouds started to clear around the moon but the time the eclipse started. I’ve also included a couple of pics from the previous evening.

A few of us went out to celebrate January natal anniversaries(mine and a friend) and upon our return were greeted with this in the sky. I, of course, had to take a picture.

A few months ago, I bought a 500mm mirror lens(a mirror lens for a mirrorless camera). These don’t use glass elements but mirrors to magnify objects and do so with a smaller size and weight. It’s a bit harder to focus precisely, but when you do it does a pretty good job. So here’s the moon, taken at 500mm.

We arrived at the spot to shoot to be greeted by the wonderful sunset. There were still quite a few clouds in the sky and the rising moon opposite the setting sun was still shrouded in clouds. This panorama is composed of 3 shots, shot with a 16mm lens.

Once the eclipse began, the clouds had pretty much settled on the horizon so we were able to get a pretty good shot of the lunar show. This shot shows the moon covered about 3/4 by the earth’s shadow.

About a hour after the shadow of the earth started creeping across the surface of the moon, it’s shadow had totally obscured the sun and the only light reaching the moon was through the earth’s atmosphere(hence the red color).
Thank you so much ?BillinGlendaleCA, do send us more when you can.

Wow! I missed it, but that is amazing! Love the Elysian Park view. Smog makes a great sunset.
Baud
That Elysian Park shot is so pretty.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Mary G: It wasn’t very smoggy due to the rain last week and the Santa Anas, there was some haze. This shot shows the haze over the San Gabriel Valley.
ETA: Anything, smog or clouds that diffuse the setting sun can serve up a great sunset. Clouds are the best.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Baud: Thanks, it’s probably not the best place to shoot downtown and the setting sun since it faces south, the Ascot Hills or Mt. Washington would be better(they’re high up and east of Downtown). But to get the color of the sunset on the buildings, anywhere high enough is pretty good(my personal favorite is Beacon Hill).

Amazing pics!

FYWP is causing Firefox to crash on my iPhone. Glad the rebuild is going to happen!
?BillinGlendaleCA
@JPL: I liked the shot of the eclipsed moon that I made a composite with a shot of Downtown LA using an 8-point star filter.
JPL
@?BillinGlendaleCA: You have a real talent, and it’s not just because of filters.
PAM Dirac
@?BillinGlendaleCA:
For some reason the first thought that popped into my head was “Wow! A more optimistic version of Blade Runner”.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@JPL: The filter just gives the spikey stuff on the bright lights. Christmas present from Madame.
@PAM Dirac: It only looks more optimistic, Trump’s still in the White House.
Baud
@JPL: Agreed.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Baud: Just smoke and mirrors*.
*Especially the second shot.

Wow! Great photos. Thanks so much for sharing!
?BillinGlendaleCA
@J.: Thanks, and you’re welcome.
Wag
As always, you knocked it out of the park with these photos. Thanks!
satby
Love them all! Great work as always Bill. I’m thinking Christmas gifts in the future.
GregB
Nice pics everyone. I want to thank Bill for his tireless efforts sharing his talents.
C Stars
Beautiful.
Elizabelle
Beautiful. Especially Elysian Park.
stinger
Spectacular as always, BiGCA! It was so cold here that night that I went out every 15 minutes for about 30 seconds, but as we also had no cloud cover, the views were worth it.
Dan B
Great photos and a reminder of the completely clear lunar eclipse we saw here in cloudy Seattle. We had seen almost nothing but complete cloud cover for weeks and didn’t expect to see the moon, let alone the eclipse. It was crystal clear the entire evening so we got to see the moon get eaten by the earth’s shadow from below as it rose, like being chased. Then the light returned at a diagonal. It would be nice to have an explanation. Orbit is perturbed from the planar? (at a loss for correct astronomical terms here…) But, the dramatic difference in the oncoming eclipse “angle” versus the “angle” of the end of the eclipse seemed like a dramatic change.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Wag: Thanks.
@satby: Thank you for your kind comments and supporting my work.
@GregB: This one was easy and topical, I’d already had a bunch of pics processed for our meetup photo page.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@C Stars: Thnaks.
@Elizabelle: I think I’ve got a few more sunset pics from up there.
@stinger: It was chilly up there by SoCal standards, but we survived. The only problem was leaving since many of the exits had been closed and locked when we left.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Dan B: I was intending(and may still do a partial version) a time lapse of the eclipse, but only up to totality. We left during totality(it was almost a hour long) since the park was technically closed and we were worried about getting stuck in the parking lot.
