Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

In after Baud. Damn.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Holy sh!t.  Senator Bennet raised his voice. Last person I’d ever expect that from…I could have sworn his photo was next to the definition of Milquetoast in Merriam’s.  I guess I need to apologize to him.

This MOFO seems to be what pushed him over the edge:

We really are off the map.

Cruz has got some nerve talking about shut downs. I watched the whole thing. If Cruz had a conscience ( spoiler: he doesn’t) he’d have crawled out of there and would never show his face again.

The most unremarked upon thing regarding the Trump era might be the increasing “radicalization” of normally milquetoast Democrats.

Could we at least have a Sense of the Senate vote that Ted Cruz is a fuckwit who needs to repeatedly slapped in the face with a large dead fish?

I feel that there would be a strongly bipartisan majority in favor of that measure.

I look forward to Republican members of Congress, elected and appointed Republican officials at the state and local level, and conservative pundits and think tankers saying “well, you’ve got us” in January 2021, when the newly inaugurated Democratic president issuing one of these regarding climate change forcing the Green New Deal, one regarding income inequality repealing all the tax cuts since the 1960s, one declaring that Justice Gorsuch, as well as all the Federal district and appellate court justices who are were confirmed because McConnell refused to allow confirmation of Obama’s nominees, all received stolen goods when they were confirmed and sworn in on the Supreme and other Federal courts, and therefore increasing the size of them and filling those appointments without the Senate’s advise and consent, and one regarding mass shootings and school shootings radically reinterpreting the 2nd Amendment.

It looked for a moment on Thursday that a bipartisan Senate group was making progress on a deal to end the shutdown. President Trump then threw a wall up in front of the compromise.
    […]
Then the White House chimed in.

“As was made clear to Senator Lindsay Graham, the 3 week CR [continuing resolution] would only work if there is a large down payment on the wall,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement as McConnell and Schumer met.

    From RawStory today:

Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation is kept tightly under wraps. When Buzzfeed claimed to have obtained leaks pointing to evidence that they’ve uncovered evidence that Donald Trump instructed Michael Cohen to lie to Congress, Mueller’s team swiftly called the report inaccurate.

But as Washington Post legal specialist Spencer Hsu observed, the timeline for the grand jury suggests Mueller might start handing down more indictments as early as Friday.

The Daily Kos noted that the jury has entered an unusual Thursday session, the first such session since July 12: the next day a dozen Russian nationals were indicted.

How about some indictments for witness tampering? For intimidating Michael Cohen away from his testimony to the House? That sounds highly indictable and would send a stern message.

Edit: Should also add that The Wall was still more of a campaign promise and not a real thing in the way people looked at it, even as recently as November. Shutting down the government for this long because of The Wall has made it much less popular, even in Texas.

    Natasha Bertrand, Atlantic

FBI agents have lost irreplaceable sources. Joint Terrorism Task Force officers can’t get into the bureau’s computer systems. Federal investigations are being stymied by a lack of resources. The partial government shutdown, now in its 33rd day, has become a serious national-security threat, the FBI Agents Association said on Tuesday.

Over the past several weeks, the association has been compiling stories from agents about the the shutdown’s impact on the bureau’s operations. One agent, speaking anonymously, said his unit had “lost several sources who have worked for months, and years, to penetrate groups and target subjects” due to the inability to pay confidential sources. “These assets cannot be replaced,” the agent said. … Others complained that their investigations were being slow-rolled, with dozens of grand-jury subpoenas going undelivered. “The operational impacts of this shutdown are immeasurable,” said one agent in the Northeast region. “We have postponed the indictment of subjects due to the shutdown.”
    …
Another agent told me that “funding for all day-to-day operations is gone. There is no rainy-day fund of cash sitting somewhere.” He wryly added that he and his colleagues are “getting about as much [information] as you are hearing from press office—very little and very late.”

An FBI spokesperson would not elaborate on the funding mechanisms available for daily operations. …

Despite their best efforts to proceed with business as usual, however, agents say their investigations are being put on hold by forces out of their control, such as a lack of funds from U.S. attorneys’ offices to issue grand-jury subpoenas. “Operationally, I requested a subpoena from the U.S. attorney’s office yesterday and was told it may take a while because their legal assistants are furloughed,” one agent said. “Depending on how long the shutdown lasts, it could be several weeks before my subpoena is issued.”

The federal judiciary is running out of money, too—the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts said in a statement on Tuesday that the federal courts can sustain funded operations through January 31, 2019 through an extension made possible by moving funds around. Courts will continue to conduct criminal trials, but some federal courts have had to issue orders “suspending or postponing civil cases in which the government is a party,” according to the statement. A federal judge in Illinois said on Tuesday that the court may run out of money to pay jurors and employees if the shutdown continues past February 8.

[Other news sources: Connecticut federal courts are also said to be about to run out of money on Friday]

In effect, it does feel like a stop-work or slowdown attack (but not by employees) on the DOJ, FBI, maybe parts of the Mueller investigation that are asking for records from overseas banks.

@Immanentize: He’s an idiot. I don’t know who’s going to run against him, though. I don’t think it’ll be Beto (not a smart move for him to run for same office he just lost) and Julian Castro is running for President. I think 2020 could be a good year for Dems, though, so maybe someone good will step up.

    @Immanentize:

But she did it right, I think, no?

I have no idea, since I never heard about it. Did she condition the invitation on opening the government?

Thanks for asking. I’m much better – still coughing a bit and blowing my nose constantly but I feel human again. Just in time, too because my mom had surgery in Boston yesterday and I’m the caregiver for the recovery.

Haven’t read the thread yet. I never watch these videos, but I watched a few seconds and got stuck. Wow. Two things really leaped out at me: He seemed honestly about to cry describing the damage to Colorado’s citizens in 2013, and he described the Senate as one of the most corrupt parts of the government. It’s obviously a prepared speech, but he honestly seemed like a man who can’t take the destruction of the bipartisan ‘Can’t we all get along’ that he has so long worshiped. The camel’s back has broken.

@Yarrow: Cruz is cunning and I do not believe this love he has for Trump he wants for Trump to crash and he will run again for president.

@MomSense: She’s involved with an organization she founded called Deeds Not Words that helps young women get involved in politics. I don’t think she’d be a good option since she badly lost her statewide race and she didn’t run a good race.

@waratah: I’m sure he’d love that. Cruz won’t have the Mercer’s Cambridge Analytica helping him in his next presidential run, so I don’t expect him to do nearly as well.

When the Republicans talk about the government being the enemy or dangerous or wanting to make it so small they can drown it in a bathtub shouldn’t they tell us what their alternative is?

White straight Christian men being able to do whatever the Hell they want to everyone else with no consequences. They’re quite plain about it, we just don’t want to believe them.

@Adam L Silverman: Minor point. Dennis Hastert was released from prison in July 2017 and has since kept an extremely low profile. He was supposed to have appeared in a Kendall County (Ill.) court last summer for a deposition as part of a lawsuit filed by one his former wrestlers regarding sexual abuse allegations against Hastert.

Major point: Sen. Bennet was awesome.
