    There are plenty of jokes in Washington about everyone in the Senate hating Cruz. Al Franken wrote about it in his book, but on one occasion I heard another Senator say the same thing to a small group of supporters. I’m pretty sure they both meant it.

    Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation is kept tightly under wraps. When Buzzfeed claimed to have obtained leaks pointing to evidence that they’ve uncovered evidence that Donald Trump instructed Michael Cohen to lie to Congress, Mueller’s team swiftly called the report inaccurate.

    But as Washington Post legal specialist Spencer Hsu observed, the timeline for the grand jury suggests Mueller might start handing down more indictments as early as Friday.

    The Daily Kos noted that the jury has entered an unusual Thursday session, the first such session since July 12: the next day a dozen Russian nationals were indicted.

    How about some indictments for witness tampering? For intimidating Michael Cohen away from his testimony to the House? That sounds highly indictable and would send a stern message.

    Thanks for posting this…I think I’ve watched it at least 3 times. Intellectually I get Bennet’s “work across the aisle” baloney…in a perfect world. But we ain’t there and we need action and emotion to move people off their behinds.

    Im not sure I see him as president, but after 2016, I’d take him. As a relatively new CO resident, I’ve noticed he does what Tammy Baldwin does in WI: in person town halls, all over the state, even in areas they didn’t win. They get out of the bubble and don’t run scared from their constituents.

    @Baud: Eminent domain only affects a small number of voters. Taking away Harvey money to pay for the wall affects a lot more people in a completely different area of the state. Doing that makes The Wall real for the Harvey victims. It’s politically stupid and it’s unpopular with voters.

    Edit: Should also add that The Wall was still more of a campaign promise and not a real thing in the way people looked at it, even as recently as November. Shutting down the government for this long because of The Wall has made it much less popular, even in Texas.

    Over the past several weeks, the association has been compiling stories from agents about the the shutdown’s impact on the bureau’s operations. One agent, speaking anonymously, said his unit had “lost several sources who have worked for months, and years, to penetrate groups and target subjects” due to the inability to pay confidential sources. “These assets cannot be replaced,” the agent said. … Others complained that their investigations were being slow-rolled, with dozens of grand-jury subpoenas going undelivered. “The operational impacts of this shutdown are immeasurable,” said one agent in the Northeast region. “We have postponed the indictment of subjects due to the shutdown.”

    Another agent told me that “funding for all day-to-day operations is gone. There is no rainy-day fund of cash sitting somewhere.” He wryly added that he and his colleagues are “getting about as much [information] as you are hearing from press office—very little and very late.”

    Despite their best efforts to proceed with business as usual, however, agents say their investigations are being put on hold by forces out of their control, such as a lack of funds from U.S. attorneys’ offices to issue grand-jury subpoenas. “Operationally, I requested a subpoena from the U.S. attorney’s office yesterday and was told it may take a while because their legal assistants are furloughed,” one agent said. “Depending on how long the shutdown lasts, it could be several weeks before my subpoena is issued.”

    The federal judiciary is running out of money, too—the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts said in a statement on Tuesday that the federal courts can sustain funded operations through January 31, 2019 through an extension made possible by moving funds around. Courts will continue to conduct criminal trials, but some federal courts have had to issue orders “suspending or postponing civil cases in which the government is a party,” according to the statement. A federal judge in Illinois said on Tuesday that the court may run out of money to pay jurors and employees if the shutdown continues past February 8.

    In effect, it does feel like a stop-work or slowdown attack (but not by employees) on the DOJ, FBI, maybe parts of the Mueller investigation that are asking for records from overseas banks.

Two things really leaped out at me: He seemed honestly about to cry describing the damage to Colorado’s citizens in 2013, and he described the Senate as one of the most corrupt parts of the government. It’s obviously a prepared speech, but he honestly seemed like a man who can’t take the destruction of the bipartisan ‘Can’t we all get along’ that he has so long worshiped. The camel’s back has broken.

    @Adam L Silverman: Minor point. Dennis Hastert was released from prison in July 2017 and has since kept an extremely low profile. He was supposed to have appeared in a Kendall County (Ill.) court last summer for a deposition as part of a lawsuit filed by one his former wrestlers regarding sexual abuse allegations against Hastert.

    Major point: Sen. Bennet was awesome.
