Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Well, now that we've settled the very pressing issue of TV president's TV time, maybe we can get back to the not letting the whole country collapse?

The government shutdown is by far the longest in U.S. history. It's put hundreds of thousands of people under financial stress and endangered our security. Join a National Call In Day to end it. @IndivisibleTeam has scripts and numbers for senators here: https://t.co/5iPvbaqeg5

    Repost from last night”

I know my disaster stories never have the cache as John’s but I just got through with a doozie. I’ve mentioned that my wife got whacked in our brand new Kia (4000 miles) and it went in for 9 days and $3k worth of work. Because we will be down to our van and my truck I made sure to fill the truck up yesterday. I was walking the pups and when I got home I noticed there was a little gas dripping down the side from the gas cap. I went over to check it and when I turned the cap there was pressure in the system and gas shot out of the filler and covered Lil Bit in fuel. I got her in the basement and bathed her in dawn and then rubbed mineral oil all over her. She has awful eyes and even though she was turned away she got drenched and her head was soaked. We called our vet and the were still there so we drove out to have her checked. They cleaned her up some more and feel that it didn’t do any permanent damage. Did I mention I got my brand new Apple Watch 4 this afternoon and it got soaked too! Everything seems ok but goddamn!

Vanity Fair published an excerpt of ex-Trumpster Cliff Sims’ “Team of Vipers” tell-all. He trashes Kellyanne Conway in the snippet linked, which she surely deserves, but the the writing is just abominable. Sims was a communications aide in the White House. In other tales of idiocy (The Hill)

Washington officials have declared a public health emergency as an outbreak of measles spreads across an anti-vaccination “hot spot” near Portland, Ore.

Clark County, Washington, has seen 23 confirmed cases of measles as of Tuesday, according to a statement from the public health department.

Twenty of those who contracted the highly contagious virus were not vaccinated against measles. The immunization status of three people have not yet been confirmed and at least one person has been hospitalized.

Clark County, which is just across the Columbia River from Portland, Ore., is a “hot spot” for outbreaks because of the high rate of nonmedical vaccine exemptions, The Washington Post reported.

@Cermet: Money is taken out of a Fed’s paycheck to cover his “share” of the cost of health insurance. If you can’t have the money taken out, because you weren’t paid anything, OPM or your agency’s payroll office has to send you a bill. You can either send the money in (not recommended because 99% of the time it won’t get posted right) or wait till you start getting paid again when your payroll office will take extra deduction till you are all caught up. Yet another expensive shutdown snafu.

@Immanentize: Who knows, the kid’s sister is a bit loony. Last year she took her daughter out of school to home school her.

ETA: The reason the kid mentioned it was that her niece didn’t get a flu shot this year. She had the flu last year and was running a temp of 104 for a couple of days. It could be the sister lost faith in the vaccine due to it not working last year(last year’s formulation wasn’t on target).

@Baud: And in that theme: Trapped in a hoax: survivors of conspiracy theories speak out

Dr Paul Offit strode into a dispute over the safety of children’s vaccines in 1998. Twenty years later, he is still embroiled in it. His latest death threat arrived only about a month ago, when someone wrote on a forum frequented by vaccine skeptics that Offit was “dead already so they might as well assassinate him”.

Offit’s worldview, as a pediatrician at the Children’s hospital of Philadelphia who has himself created a vaccine against rotavirus, had always revolved around the scientific method and evidence-based reality. “The assumption was that if you publish good papers in good journals, truth emerges and people abandon ill-founded beliefs. Didn’t work that way.”
    …………………………….
He set up the Vaccine Education Center to give the public a basic appreciation of vaccines which globally prevent up to 3m deaths each year.

The backlash came almost immediately. It began with a flurry of emails calling him Satan, a Nazi. “It was devastating. It hurt, it always hurt, it still hurts. I never got so thick-skinned that when people assume my motives are evil it doesn’t hurt me.”

He was stalked by a man who followed him from from one speaking engagement to the next. Protesters appeared outside medical meetings bearing placards with Offit’s face above the word “TERRORIST”.

A voicemail was left for him at home. The man mentioned he had young children the same age as Offit’s. “We all want what’s best for our children, I’m sure you want what’s best for your children,” the man said, before going on to name Offit’s kids as well as the school they attended.

It was the one time that Offit considered dropping it all. That night, he talked to his wife, Bonnie, and offered to quit standing up for vaccines. “If Bonnie had said stop to me that night, I would have stopped.” Bonnie told him to hang in there. You’re doing the right thing, she said, for science, for children. You mustn’t let them shut you up.
    …………………………
The result of this surge in conspiracy theories around vaccines is that measles outbreaks are at a 20-year high. In 2018 there were more than 60,000 European cases with 72 deaths, twice the number from the year before.

Offit has seen at first hand what that means. One of the cases that haunts him is that of a mother who decided not to vaccinate her infant son against influenza, having read some fallacious material about the treatment.

The little boy was brought in to the hospital and went through a progression of increasingly invasive care as his body was ravaged with flu. First the child was given an oxygen face mask, then put in a ventilator, then an oscillator and heart-lung machine, until finally he died. “The mother watched her child die in slow motion, like falling off a cliff slowly. It was very hard.”

After the boy’s death, Offit asked the mother if she would be willing to talk to other parents wrestling with the decision to vaccinate as a way of preventing further tragedy. She politely declined. “She said to me she still thinks she made the right choice – the vaccine would have been more harmful.”

His is one of four stories they highlight. The other 3 are:

Marcel Fontaine- Falsely accused of being the Parkland shooter
Lenny Pozner- Targeted after he lost his child at Sandy Hook
Brianna Wu- Attacked by #gamergate trolls

I just got home. I was lucky to have gotten there before they gave him the next shot of morphine so even though he couldn’t open his eyes and he is on a breathing tube he was very aware of what I was reading. I read him almost all of the comments and names. He clearly understood and recognized everyone. He laughed at some until he choked, he was saddened by some but was very clearly moved by all of the love. He has struggled with acceptance all of his life, I hope for the the first time in his life that he realizes just how much he is loved. I can’t express what all of you mean to me. Thank you!

So: good morning, Schlemazel. I hope they are keeping you comfortable, and that you get some quality time with your family. You are in my thoughts, every day.

@Raven: Poor Lil Bit! I’m glad she’s ok. Mr DAW got some sort of fitness watch for Christmas too. Garmond, I think? He’s working on getting it to lower his daily goal, which seems off point to me.

My writers group met last night. They always meet in the library right next door and I usually walk to it along a path through trees and some open area. Last night, that proved to be nearly knee deep in snow. I had to stop several times to take deep breaths because it was such hard work. To make up for it, I let someone drive me home. Again, that would be from next door.

@p.a.: That was a totally unnecessary fight too. He just couldn’t let Pelosi have the last word. Instead he had to announce he was going to give that speech in the House whether the wanted it or not.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: This is my brutal take on the anti-vaxer mindset: People who wish to feel “special” and “different” seize on vaccinations as a way to “separate” themselves from those conformists who “mindlessly” follow the “herd.” To which I say, people stand out for being exceptionally musical or artistic or athletic or kind or generous or thoughtful, but nobody actually stands out for simply setting themselves in opposition to others for no good reason. I totally understand why pediatricians get exasperated with these parents. They aren’t being thoughtful or concerned about their children. They are just looking for a completely fake way to stand out.

@Dorothy A. Winsor: Most people I know have a Garmin. I was drawn to this because of the health monitor:

In addition to chatting with friends, streaming music, and tracking workouts, you can now use your Apple Watch to take an electrocardiogram (also known as an EKG or ECG test) to measure heart rhythm, as well as identify signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib). Both features go live today for Series 4 users as part of a free update to watchOS 5.1.2, and Series 1 through 4 users will get the irregular heart rate notifications with the update.
The new ECG app can generate an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram using electrodes in the back crystal and Digital Crown of the Series 4. To use, simply launch the ECG app and hold your finger against the Digital Crown, which will send a circuit of electrical signals across your heart to monitor for unusual heart rhythms.
After just 30 seconds, you’ll get your reading: sinus rhythm (which means no unusual heart rhythms were detected), AFib, or inconclusive

My recent stroke made me think this might come in handy.

His Hyper-Realistic Fingernail Tattoo Went Viral. Now He Plans to Help More People

On Tuesday, Mark Bertram walked into Eric Catalano’s tattoo shop in Hecker, Illinois, with a uncommon request: fingernail tattoos. Eleven minutes later, Catalano finished his work. There, on the smooth skin that caps the surgically shortened ring and middle fingers of Bertram’s left hand, were two brand-new fingernails.

Bertram had lost both fingers to the first knuckle after the digits were caught in an air conditioner’s belt fan last year. But the tattoos made it look like his nubs were full fingers.

“Oh,” he told Catalano, looking at the speedy ink work. “Those are really nice.”

When looking, one doesn’t just do a double take, it’s a triple-quadruple take.

In the days since the photos of the fingernail work went viral, Catalano says he’s been swamped with messages, not just from other individuals with missing fingers and toes, but people asking about belly buttons and nostrils.

“I’m not really sure where the limit is,” he says.

However, Catalano adds that he is reaching his personal limit. As a matter of principle, he refuses to take money for tattooing nipples and areolas on cancer survivors, and he similarly refused payment from Bertram for the fingernails. Now he’s grappling with hundreds of requests for hyper-realistic tattoos, even as he’s not sure how much more free work he can do while still running a business. To make up the difference, Catalano launched a GoFundMe campaign yesterday with the goal of raising $50,000 to fund free tattoo work for cancer survivors and amputees.

“I feel terrible charging the people who have already suffered pain and injury or battling life and death,” Catalano wrote in the description of the campaign, which as of this writing has hit $2,200. “They’ve already been through so much.”

It’s now up to about $5K, definitely a worthy cause if one is so inclined.

I live in the middle of nowhere and I don’t make “deals” with fancy people, but I do engage in a lot of negotiations in the course of my work – daily, hourly, some days and I have literally never encountered this Trump Family approach that involves bragging loudly about what a great “dealmaker” you are while failing, week after week, to get a deal on anything. I haven’t encountered a single person who does that- not a lawyer, not a litigant, not a mediator, not privately and not publicly. It must be very high powered and limited to the very biggest, most stupendous “deals”.

I’m going to a mediation this morning. I’ll keep looking for an example, but so far I don’t think this is real. This might happen only in movies and now, in the White House.

Phoenix police say a licensed practical nurse has been arrested on a charge of sexual assault in the impregnation of an incapacitated woman who gave birth last month at a long-term healthcare facility.

The Phoenix police chief, Jeri Williams, said on Wednesday investigators arrested 36-year-old Nathan Sutherland on one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse. Williams said Sutherland worked at the Hacienda HealthCare facility where the woman lived and had been providing care to her.

The 29-year-old victim has been incapacitated since the age of three and gave birth to a boy at the facility on 29 December. Employees said they had no idea she was pregnant. Court records say her last known physical examination was in April.

Trump is out of his league here. Pelosi knew she held the only card that meant anything. If Trump had agreed with her right away…said “Yes, we shouldn’t have the SOTU until the government is open.” he would have looked magnanimous…like a leader…like a President. AND he would have blunted the backlash from his tantrum about trying to do it anyway. But Pelosi KNEW he wouldn’t do that. She KNEW he would try to bully his way to getting what he wanted. She KNEW he couldn’t act like a real President.
To paraphrase a line from Jerry Maguire…She had him at hello.

“She said to me she still thinks she made the right choice – the vaccine would have been more harmful.”

She has to continue to think that. Because if she didn’t then she murdered her child through her negligence.

The vaccine has to be worse, because the alternative is too terrible to contemplate.

This is what a lot of the fear and paranoia around vaccination is. Your child has autism – it can’t be a thing that just happens, and if it’s genetic or even developmental that makes it your “fault” to some degree. But if the vaccine manufacturers are doing something that hurts children to make a profit – ah NOW you have a Devil you can blame! And that makes it neither a random event nor your fault – it’s their fault!

Personally I accept a worldview were shit just happens and sometimes there’s nothing we can do about it. But I can see how that would be scarier for some than the world where Someone is out to Get them through nefarious means. Random shit happening can’t really be stopped, but you can at least hope that nefarious actors might someday be brought to justice.
