Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

T R E 4 5 O N

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

People are complicated. Love is not.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

You cannot shame the shameless.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

It ain’t over til it’s over of course, but I did have a feeling this would be the last straw. (Or, for Republicans, the first straw that affected them and therefore they cared about)

So, was it “couldn’t give the SotU” or “air traffic fucked up” or both? Certainly wasn’t “federal employees couldn’t buy groceries”, cause Trump and his minions clearly didn’t give a shit about that.

It was helluva of an improvement over their first attempt for sure and has worked fairly well more or less for 200 years.

So many other countries have had multiple constitutions and “Republics”. France is on its fifth! Technically, the United States is in it’s second Federal Republic since the Articles of Confederation didn’t work out so good. So really, our current system/federal government should be called the Second American Federal Republic.

But OTOH Brexit pretty clearly proves that they can also be stymied by internal schisms to the point of completely seizing-up. Doesn’t change the fact that what we have is *worse*, measurably *worse*.

I’m reminded of Edward Watts’ _Mortal Republic: How Rome Fell Into Tyranny_, where he traces the roots of the civil wars that ended the Roman Republic, to the inability of the Senate and the other legislative body (whose name escape me) to effectively negotiate and reach compromises, instead stalling until the involved parties resorted to violence.

I wonder if he’ll start hiding out like they do when they’re really unpopular. Bush Jr. was downright petulant by the end – “you don’t like me? Well, I don’t like YOU either” Remember that? How he just disappeared? Hank Paulson was the acting.

It was like Bush physically diminished. He looked smaller. Trump probably isn’t self aware enough to know he’s loathed. He’ll probably demand that we love him more frequently. If that is possible.

Well, what am I going to do, ignore her when she speaks to me?
