It ain’t over til it’s over of course, but I did have a feeling this would be the last straw. (Or, for Republicans, the first straw that affected them and therefore they cared about)
Belafon
It isn’t over until he signs the bill.
Dorothy A. Winsor
It wouldn’t surprise me if Trump et al were completely surprised air travel would be affected by a shutdown.
dmsilev
So, was it “couldn’t give the SotU” or “air traffic fucked up” or both? Certainly wasn’t “federal employees couldn’t buy groceries”, cause Trump and his minions clearly didn’t give a shit about that.
Ohio Mom
Off topic but it’s winter, why don’t they do this inside?
Tom Levenson
As someone re-entering US airspace this weekend, I confess I’m a little relieved.

@dmsilev: I sure hope that Nancy reschedules the SOTU for sometime in March.

I can’t believe that electing a business fraud/reality TV star President turned out to be such a disaster. I mean, whocouldanode?
schrodingers_cat
In a parliamentary democracy inability to pass a budget leads automatically to a vote of no confidence and fresh elections. But the best constitution in the world did not plan for a mad man grabbing the reins of power?

Infrastructure Week sure is dragging on. So much winning.

LOL at this thread. They’re so fierce. On Twitter.

@schrodingers_cat: hey, it was a good effort for the 18th century!

@Dorothy A. Winsor:
They have good reason to believe that. The last shutdown, one thing that was fixed FAST was getting ATC running, inspite of whatever shutdown took place. Like the Top post says, Don’t inconvenience the million milers, or the private jet traffic.

@schrodingers_cat: The Founding Fathers were overly optimistic about the whole “sane people in Congress and the Presidency” thing.
Yarrow
Have Co-Presidents Hannity, Coulter, Limbaugh and FoxNews weighed in on this deal yet?
dmsilev
Trump can’t even be on time for an event at the house he’s infesting. I assume that back-stage, aides are pumping him full of medication so he’ll stay more or less on script.
dmsilev
@Yarrow: Fox’s website has “Deal in Works?” as a second or third tier story. I guess we’ll have to wait for tonight to find out for sure.

The federal government paycheck schedule has today as a bi-weekly payday. I wonder if the check issuing system can come up with checks any faster than in two weeks for furloughed/unpaid workers?
Xecky Gilchrist
@Yarrow: I was wondering if maybe some of the more haggard WH and Senate staff haven’t detained them somewhere until the signing is done.
CaseyL
@dmsilev: It’ll either be a droning announcement that the government is re-opened, or a flailing melange of self-pity, projection, accusations, excuses, and MAYBE an announcement that govt is re-opened.
schrodingers_cat
@dmsilev: Even after all the crazy kings they had? Triumph of hope over experience?

@dmsilev: Yeah, the electoral college was supposed to keep the tyrants and the incompetents out of the presidency. :(

@Major Major Major Major: Yes I agree. But conservatives like to pretend like it was the word of God and the founding fathers were Moses equivalent.

@JPL: No, no. Obviously the SotU speech is important, so should be held soon. I suggest she schedule it for the same timeslot as the Superbowl.

@schrodingers_cat:
Well, the EC was supposed to be the moderating force, but we all saw how that worked out. Not that the EC was a good idea in the first place.
I think the Founders never wanted anything to do with the Westminster system (British!) and modern parliamentary democracy didn’t exist yet in 1789 AFAIK.
catclub
@Xecky Gilchrist: Trump is scared of talking to them before he makes the statement. Knows that if they get to him overnight he will fold to them again.
Everybody knows that whoever is the last one to talk to trump determines the result. Right, Stephen Miller?
dmsilev
@CaseyL: Breitbart went with “Drudge Report: Shutdown Deal Reached; Government to Reopen Temporarily”. You have to click through and read way way down to see “3 week CR with no wall money”. Again, let’s wait a few hours and see how the shrieking looks then.
TaMara (HFG)
I refuse to listen to Trump. So I’ll rely on you guys for the breakdown.

Former. No one he cares about flies commercial.
I assume the SOTU is on? We should make sure Ann Coulter knows he sold the wall out for TV time.
CaseyL
@dmsilev: Just long enough to demand Nancy let him have his SOTU, then.
Major Major Major Major
@schrodingers_cat: is it just me or have they been doing that less lately? Is it just for when a democrat is president, like flag pins?
dmsilev
@schrodingers_cat: A combination of the thought that the Presidency would only go to people as the culmination of one’s time in government and the Electoral College as a filter. Yeah, neither assumption has held up well. They got a lot of things right with the Constitution, but screwed up a bunch as well.
Betty Cracker

It was helluva of an improvement over their first attempt for sure and has worked fairly well more or less for 200 years.
So many other countries have had multiple constitutions and “Republics”. France is on its fifth! Technically, the United States is in it’s second Federal Republic since the Articles of Confederation didn’t work out so good. So really, our current system/federal government should be called the Second American Federal Republic.

He’s number one.

Another thing about the timing of this: it takes the focus off of the Roger Stone indictment.
But yeah, I have no doubt it was the SOTU. His vanity couldn’t stand it. Nancy knows!

@??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??: @schrodingers_cat: SC is right, that typically a parliamentary democracy works better than our …. fucking hodgepodge. But OTOH Brexit pretty clearly proves that they can also be stymied by internal schisms to the point of completely seizing-up. Doesn’t change the fact that what we have is *worse*, measurably *worse*.
I’m reminded of Edward Watts’ _Mortal Republic: How Rome Fell Into Tyranny_, where he traces the roots of the civil wars that ended the Roman Republic, to the inability of the Senate and the other legislative body (whose name escape me) to effectively negotiate and reach compromises, instead stalling until the involved parties resorted to violence.

@dmsilev: He’s raging because of Stone’s arrest and indictment. They can’t start the press conference in the Rose Garden, because they have know way of knowing if he’s going to do what has been reported – announce he’s accepting a 3 week CR as a compromise, etc, etc, – or if he’ll come out, throw that to the wind because he’s mad and scared and feels threatened and do or say Deity knows what. I would not be surprised if they actually cancel the thing.

Were I the glorious NDP, I think I would make Trump’s delivering any SOTU in the House chamber contingent on a written promise of no further government shutdowns through January 20, 2021.
Of course, I fervently hope that neither Trump nor Pence will be at the helm by year’s end, much less January 2021. But no more shutdowns. Take that tactic away from Trump and his party of deplorable cowards.

So what stops him from doing this all over again? He give the SOTU (a hate fest against the democrats) says he negotiated in good faith..blah blah blah, I’m declaring an emergency to get funds. No doubt it’s a victory for democrats, but temporary. I’m afraid that as soon as the morons on FOX rile him up we’ll be back to square one. Hope Pelosi has plans for this.
MattF
@Patricia Kayden: I liked Coulter best when her jaws were wired shut.

@Kay: If Republicans wouldn’t fold and give him a wall, why would DEMs?
Raoul
@dmsilev: I think there was a sprinkling of “This is your fault,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that also started leaking (flooding?) to the press.
Also, too, Pence took an earful. Party unity only goes so far when the putative top of the ticket is at ~36% approval.
dmsilev
@??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??: Sure, but Pelosi and her team have no real reason to put wall funding in any long-term spending bill at this point. So, if he throws another hissy fit, expect it to play out much as this one did.
I know he’s threatened to declare an emergency, but given that it’s been two
centuriesyears since he took office, that’s going to be a hard claim to defend in court.Dorothy A. Winsor
I see a WaPo headline: Trump announces deal. What “deal”? What did he get? I see nothing.
Kay
I’m just going to enjoy the win. I don’t care what they say “I will be back in 3 weeks with my demand, mark my words!” is just a dragged out concession.
MattF
@rk: I’d just note that the result as of right now is exactly what Pelosi offered.

@schrodingers_cat: Actually, they kind of did. It is why we have the impeachment process. And they were almost certain there was going to be foreign interference (the whole politics of the 1790s after the Constitution had the Federalists accusing the Jeffersonian Republicans of being radicals dominated by French Jacobins and the Republicans accusing Hamilton and Adams and the Federalists of being agents of the British Crown). But they really underestimated and were naive about how parties and factions form in any body politic. Class interests, religion, geography, and race all set us against each other in the end.

Yeah, I really don’t think we have to worry about more shutdowns. Orangymandius is incapable of learning, but McConnell has learned. The three-weeks will go by and the budget will pass with little comment. No wall ever will be built. The butterflies are safe.
Nancy SMASH has worked her magic. She is gold.

@rikyrah:
Yes. Yes, I do.
@rk:
Two things. First, everyone knows how it will play out, who will get the blame, and who will fold in the end. Trump, McConnell, Nancy, Schumer, and every Senator knows it.
Second, an experience like this is seismic for a narcissist. He will not be eager to repeat it, and the way is paved for him to fold faster if he does. Oh, and now Nancy scares him.
Aleta
So what will McConnell and Co. put into the resolution to make it look different than what Senate Repubs voted down yesterday, and Pelosi has offered?
(Other than Rs are offering 3 weeks of funding instead of two.)

Nope.
Actually, they did consider that voters might elect a fool, but thought that they had installed sufficient checks against that.
But they also did not consider that a chunk of the political establishment and a good chunk of voters would happily install an autocrat, a thief, a scoundrel.

@rk: Hopefully Nancy invites him to give the SOTU for a date after the CR expires. That would seem like her style (and she’s a woman with panache).

@rk: Have you seen Speaker Pelosi notify anyone that the State of the Union is back on for Tuesday night? If she’s smart, and she is, she states that there is no State of the Union address in the House until a proper set of CRs are negotiated, passed, and signed into law for the rest of the fiscal year.

When you punch a bully in the face, something interesting happens. They don’t just back down.
They crawl to you. They want to be your friend, to make sure that nothing that bad ever happens again to them. Speaker Pelosi knows this.
She’s going to punch him again and again and again, partly because she doesn’t like him very much, but mostly to make goddamn sure this doesn’t happen again.
I expect to see some legislation coming forth pretty soon to end the practice of government shutdowns for good. The GOP has done it, what, six times now and it has killed them every time. They won’t write the legislation, but they’ll quietly pass it.

It’s Friday, and payday for Feds, right? When can the workers get paid? If they just follow normal procedures it’s another 2 weeks before they see any money, and writing adjustments by hand requires a lot of work by a lot of people, and the people can’t even come in to start before Saturday or possibly even Monday.

She really didn’t serve him well, though. This was dumb. It reveals him to be a fraud on his two strongest myths- deal making and building. That’s why the wall looms so large both to Trump and to his base. It’s a physical symbol of what they believe about him. The dealmaker can’t make a deal and the builder can’t put up a wall.

@The Moar You Know: I think we will have to wait for the trifecta before we have a law signed. But when we do, in order to pass constitutional muster, we will have to put some time limit on the automatic part. Say, about 180 days before the Government can officially shut down after a budget runs out, and even then there needs to be a fund to reimburse the furloughed workers, say the Federal Equivalent of an Unemployment Fund or Emergency Fund.
Brachiator
@Frankensteinbeck:
Trump is a foolish man who never knows when he has been beaten.
He has not budged from his hard line anti-immigration stance. He still is holding the DACA people hostage, to be dangled again as needed.
The Democrats have to find a way to break him. Or give him a different shiny toy to make him happy.
This is contradicted by Trump’s past reactions to defeats and setbacks. His powers of denial and ego protection are remarkable.
And he still has McConnell and the GOP leadership backing him up.
