Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

The willow is too close to the house.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

This fight is for everything.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

No one could have predicted…

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

He really is that stupid.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Yeah. I hope we spend the next 3 weeks getting other departments funded so there are fewer hostages available for Trump to try this bullshit again.

I don’t hate Chuck, but if we take back the Senate in 2020, we could use a new majority leader.
And I would be very happy if we ever got a President Pelosi. (ETA: Perhaps simultaneous indictments for Trump and Pence? A boy can dream.)

Have you read The Onion article from today where Chuck is totally shocked that he didn’t fold? It’s pretty funny, but not as funny as the one two down from it where Jared assures us he would only have sold state secrets for a good amount of coin.

But he didn’t and the Dems didn’t fold. Credit to all of them.

It’s almost too bad that she hasn’t yet agreed on a rescheduled date for the SotU. Tuesday would be just about right; Trump gets to spend a weekend listening to the whole world laugh at how she beat him silly, then he has to get up and speak while she stands behind him holding a large hammer. With a week or two to convince himself that he really won, biggly, it wouldn’t have the same impact.

I JUST saw video of Pelosi signing the House bill. She did the thing where she signed with cameras rolling, a bunch of people ranged behind her, using a bunch of pens and then handing out the pens to various people. I’ve never see a Speaker do that. Is that usual or is she going “coequal branch, bitches!” ?

@Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (formerly Mumphrey, et al.): I don’t know what the levers of power are in either leader’s job. the CW, and for as long as I’ve been following politics, is that most Senators take themselves extremely seriously and hold themselves in very high regard. Add to that someone like Manchin who’s very dumb and sees himself as a statesman, you’re not just herding cats, you’re herding cats on coke. (edited, again, autocorrectopalooza)

@Cacti: and she still hasn’t scheduled the SOTU. President Deals let her know how much that moment of attention means to him, so she’s holding it back. Hopefully it will work on the upcoming “fiscal cliff”

I thought both Reid and Nancy Pelosi were both worthless.

Very difficult to hold the line when the voters do not have your back.
In the aftermath of 9/11, virtually all pundits and about nine tenths of the electorate went insane, and eagerly bought into the Republican security/vengeance/hard-ass/proto-fascist narrative. Democrats who stood up against that wave were excoriated by their own voters.

It was a bad time in America. Worse, in many important ways, than Trumpism.

Heh heh. Bloomberg, so it’s behind a paywall. But:

Roger Stone Draws the Judge Who Threw Paul Manafort in Jail

Self-anointed political dirty trickster Roger Stone will have to tread carefully as he prepares to defend against charges of obstructing Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe and lying about his communications with WikiLeaks.

The no-nonsense judge assigned Stone’s case has already demonstrated that she’s got little patience for defendants who misbehave. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson issued a gag order on Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort and later revoked his bail and threw him in jail.

…. That kind of self-restraint could present a challenge for Stone, who is accustomed to speaking his mind. Shortly after appearing in a Fort Lauderdale, Florida, court Friday, Stone addressed a crowd of reporters, fans and detractors, proclaiming the charges against him were politically motivated and declaring his innocence. He also promised to appear on television later Friday.

Jackson was nominated in 2011 to serve on the federal court in Washington by President Barack Obama. A Baltimore native, born in 1954, she’d been both a federal prosecutor and criminal defense lawyer.

Presiding over the Manafort case since his October 2017 indictment, Jackson has presented herself as tough, fair and keenly aware of the public interest in the case.

Stone’s first appearance before Jackson has not yet been scheduled.

Another strong woman from Baltimore. More six inch heels. These, under a sedate black judge’s robe. And an Obama appointee, too.

    ETA: Missed sharing this tidbit:

“This is not middle school,” Jackson told Manafort’s lawyers before ordering him locked up in June for alleged witness tampering. “I can’t take his cellphone.”

    @Adam L Silverman: I don’t see Kurt mentioning FTFNYT.

    FTFNYT from August 19, 2016:

WASHINGTON — The disclosure last week that Hillary Clinton was being treated for pneumonia thrust the health of both of the major parties’ presidential candidates and their running mates to the center of the campaign, and led to the release of more detailed medical histories from the two candidates seeking what is widely regarded as the world’s most demanding job.

Mrs. Clinton, 68, the Democratic presidential nominee, who has had serious medical problems in recent years, released on Wednesday an update of a July 2015 letter from her doctor attesting to her overall good health and ability to serve a full four-year term as president. However, the doctor, Dr. Lisa Bardack of Mt. Kisco, N.Y., noted that Mrs. Clinton had developed two new medical conditions in 2016: a sinus and ear infection in the winter and pneumonia this month.

Dr. Bardack wrote that she had regularly examined Mrs. Clinton this year for routine care and that she had been closely monitoring her pneumonia, which is improving.

But doctors not connected with the candidate’s care say that the letters omit basic information like height and weight, and that a more detailed history of her blood clots and a 2012 concussion should be disclosed.

I’m beginning to think whatever is going on with McConnell will end up with him leaving the Senate before 2020. Just a hunch, but he definitely gives the impression of somebody being blackmailed into going against his own political instincts.

And if there’s any dirt, Mueller already knows it.

    @Mai Naem mobile:

I am beginning to wonder what kind of business Rupert Murdoch is doing with Putin because it truly doesn’t make sense to egg on Trumpov with the Fox&Friends garbage, Tucker,Judge Jeanie etc when it’s obvious its not going to end well. I am talking beyond Wendy Deng being Putin’s gf.

Let us also remember that Rupert Murdoch was seen entering McConnell’s office on November 8, just before the Fox News Twitter account stopped posting. It hasn’t posted anything since. Something is up there.

    @Adam L Silverman:

There is a jaw-dropping line in Stone indictment folks are missing. It implicates entire conservative media bubble – including Hannity, Tucker, Breitbart, and rest of @FoxNews – as participants/dupes in a fraud directed by people in Stone-Individual 1-Wikileaks conspiracy..

Who’s missing what now? I’ve been saying the media are in the pay of Russia for ages now. Fox are just the most obvious ones. Of course they are. I still think the wearing of back-of-hand bandaids is a kind of panic signal among these traitorous clowns.

@Yarrow: Without McConnell this pile of bozos wouldn’t have got NEARLY as far as they did. Mitch is Putin’s best, best ally and his smarts and determination have taken this treason as far as it could possibly go. They couldn’t have dreamed it would go this well.

Even so, he has limits. And he’s all in on his treason. No, he’s not enjoying this: there’s no exit strategy. It was fun while it was working.

@Ceci n est pas mon nym: I don’t know if he’ll leave before 2020 but he’s definitely nervous. Has been since December, 2016. He’s a traitor and he knows he’s in trouble.

@West of the Cascades: I agree that cartoons don’t need to be accurate, but they do need to capture the essence of someone. This cartoon does not in any way capture the essence of Nancy Pelosi, except for the use of the color red.

edit: just looked at your links. he is clearly very talented and typically does capture the essence of people. in that way, he did an amazing job on a lot of them. truly talented. but I came away feeling even more like he did a terrible job on pelosi in this one. when i look at that cartoon, it’s jarring. i may be wrong but it just seems lazy on his part.

If it weren’t for Pelosi, Schumer would have folded and there ain’t nothing you can say that would convince me otherwise.

@WaterGirl: Reminded me of cartoons of Hillary. Wonder if the artist was conflating?
