The joke here is that the Trail of Tears was a genocide. Get it? Get it? https://t.co/6wC5uwKnTa

— Jeet Heer (@HeerJeet) February 9, 2019

A couple of middle-aged Democrats in Virginia get outed for their yearbook photos, and suddenly the lamestream media forgot all about the GOP’s multigenerational Southern Strategy…

"how fucking dare you accuse him of knowing basic middle school facts about American history. My sweet strong muscly President is dumber than hammered turds and that's why I love him!" https://t.co/HDlzPAQyOu

— Zeddy (@Zeddary) February 10, 2019

*I* don’t think the Oval Office Occupant came up with that analogy on his own either, but he surely awarded Stephen Miller an extra frozen rat for explaining it to him. And he’ll keep gleefully repeating ‘Trail of TEARS! hur dur snurf‘ at his rallies until Mueller or the Grim Reaper haul him off the public stage permanently.

The same week in which the political world has united around the notion that posting a black face pic on your yearbook is a cause for resignation, the president makes a joke about Native American genocide, his son cheers it, and it will likely be viewed as par for the course.

— Sam Stein (@samstein) February 10, 2019

For a candidate they say has no chance at all, the president and many people around him sure spend a lot of time talking about Elizabeth Warren

— Edward-Isaac Dovere (@IsaacDovere) February 9, 2019

I wonder what all caps genocide joke Trump would use on Bernie Sanders.

— Schooley (@Rschooley) February 9, 2019

Huge jump in Indigenous voter turnout likely cost the GOP big races in Montana, Oklahoma, Arizona, Kansas and sent the first two Native women to Congress and near as I can tell no one in DC media has loudly connected it to the President regularly slurring Native Americans.

— Zeddy (@Zeddary) February 10, 2019

I bring this up because it seems to have been internalized that Trump's particular racism against Native Americans either 'doesn't matter' or, from the Cillizza crowd, is even "effective." But I think case can be made he & the GOP have already paid a direct political price for it

— Zeddy (@Zeddary) February 10, 2019

Some seem to think this is harmless, like Native Americans disappeared in the 1880s or something. There are over 5 million Native Americans today, roughly equivalent to the number of Jewish Americans.

— Seth Masket (@smotus) February 10, 2019

The Repubs have carefully molded themselves into the Party of Bigotry, and now the bigots are in charge of the party. Trump is the GOP is Trump, and BabyDick is their prophet:

A great illustration of how Republican hands are tied: they lose 40 seats in the House because voters reject Trumpism, but take no steps to move from him bc their remaining members (and leaders) are in mostly Trumpy districts

The president won Wyo by 40https://t.co/t3f46diWoz

I have no idea what that means (in a detailed sense), and I don’t need/want you to ‘splain it to me, but for a long time, something keeps causing Chrome to continually access who-knows-what, and it eventually sucks up memory (I think) and frequently crashes the page. It doesn’t seem to be doing that on this page, however — maybe you’ve exorcised the demons?

ETA: Spoke too soon: it keeps calling a doubleclick.net routine or page or script or whatever. [Hey, I’m a hardware gut — what do I know?]

I finally broke down and installed NoScript just for BJ today. Haven’t had connection issues since and that effin connetix player that needs to be launched into the sun is now fucking gone altogether. Side effect: reply function no longer works, edit functions gone, and formatting isn’t too pretty – cest la vie.

    Worth it.

Well, Twit, I mean, Brit. What else could he mean by “TRAIL”? Why else would he emphasize that particular word? What, like trail as in a “western” sense? Traveling the Oregon Trail? How could Trump be so stupid not to understand what people might think, even if I grant your premise? I’d like to know Hume’s answer to this.

Media is acting like Republicans are hammering on a deep issue of importance to everyone. Most white Americans are indifferent to the issues NAs care about. The media is predominantly indifferent to NA issues too. So WTF. If they think NA heritage is important they would report on it instead of Warren.

Field of Vision, 7 minute short film directed by Marshall Curry (Oscar nom)

    https://vimeo.com/237489146

In 1939, 20,000 Americans rallied in New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism — an event largely forgotten from U.S. history. A NIGHT AT THE GARDEN, made entirely from archival footage filmed that night, transports audiences to this chilling gathering and shines a light on the power of demagoguery and anti-Semitism in the United States.

    (Marshall Curry)
A friend of mine told me about [the rally] last year, and I couldn’t believe that I’d never heard of it.

When I found out it had been filmed, I asked an archival researcher, Rich Remsberg, to see what he could find. It turned out that short clips had been used in history documentaries before, but no one seemed to have collected together all of the scraps of footage—there was some at the National Archives, some at UCLA’s archive, some at other places. So he gathered it, and I edited it together into a short narrative.
    …
The first thing thing that struck me was that an event like this could happen in the heart of New York City, a city that was diverse, modern, and progressive even in 1939.

The second thing that struck me was the way these American Nazis used the symbols of America to sell an ideology that a few years later hundreds of thousands of Americans would die fighting against.

It really illustrated that the tactics of demagogues have been the same throughout the ages. They attack the press, using sarcasm and humor. They tell their followers that they are the true Americans (or Germans or Spartans or…).

And they encourage their followers to “take their country back” from whatever minority group has ruined it.

No shit. We go after our own hard for a 34 year old yearbook photo, which we really should because consistency matters, but the GOP has not a peep about a Trail of Tears pun. The media doesn’t do story after story after story about it either. We’ve just accepted that everything he says sounds like something a comment on Breitbart article. It’s so normal that no one is shocked by it anymore, not that Republicans ever were. We run Al Franken out of the Senate after he apologized for some pretty minor indescretions and asked for a full investigation of him. Jim Jordan overlooks sexual abuse as a college coach and they make him a leader in the House. They elect a guy who assaulted a reporter and joke about it just being “Montana justice”. Any Democrat would have been called on, by Democrats, to drop out of the race if they did that even if what only a few days from the election. I could go on forever about the double standards they give to Trump. We care about character, they don’t, and that makes it asymmetric warfare. When we behave by one set of standards and they behave by a much lower one, it lends to the bothsiderism the media is so addicted to because they can always say “well, look at the Democrats who have been in trouble,” when that’s only because we hold our own to a much higher standard.

Not only does the media normalize republican racism but they never bother to ask native American or POC republican-enablers about it.

Will reporters continue to write innumerable articles featuring native Americans angry about Liz Warren”s tone deaf DNA test? Fuck yeah. Will these same reporters ask these same angry native Americans how they feel about Trump’s genocide joke? Not on your life.

When that evil Liz Warren is vanquished and the Trump regime confiscates all the reservations to build golf courses my schadenfreude will runneth over.

Will reporters continue to write innumerable articles featuring native Americans angry about Liz Warren”s tone deaf DNA test?

In fact, according to a story I read recently (can’t look for the link right now), there weren’t that many NAs upset about Warren getting the DNA test. The media found one or two and hyped them endlessly.

If you follow Native Americans on social media, you can hear them speak for themselves. This is not that hard.

Did you know there’s a whole, vile thing where white women dress up for Halloween as dead Native Americans and take selfies? You wouldn’t think that level of depravity would be standing room only, but it is.

    @hervevillechaizelounge:
You’re angry at msm reporters for who they talk to and what they write. (You could include who the media co.s hire. + Who the editors assign to those stories.)

But you conclude how happy you’ll be when “Trump regime confiscates all the reservations.” ?

You haven’t read all of the online NA opposition to Trump since 2016?

Your conclusion, turning the blame on NAs for how the msm report on them, without any other explanation, comes across as illogical, uninformed and a racist projection.

  31. 31.

    Aleta

    February 11, 2019 at 5:13 pm

@Jay: You’ve said that before without a link or how it’s relevant.

You don’t have to be a US citizen to criticize things that happen here or our gov’t officials. (I think you know that : ) — are you Australian or am I mistaken? )

Especially so for indigenous issues, since borders and relocations were imposed on tribes and families w/o their agreement.

    Aleta

    February 11, 2019 at 6:15 pm

    @hervevillechaizelounge:

Could be you’re trolling for Trump but, benefit of the doubt:

I guess what I’m trying to say is, you can’t use the msm’s framing of the issue or the explanations of their white reporters to argue against criticism of Warren. It’s especially illogical if you understand and despise all the flaws of the msm.

Quote what a NA leader has said and respond directly to that. Like Tata said above, you’d need to read their independent press and twitter and social media to do that.

Attacks on NAs in general just follow Trump’s fascist game plan.
