Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Consistently wrong since 2002

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

He really is that stupid.

People are weird.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

    Good evening BJ.

Long comment so sit back and relax….lol

I had my first physical therapy sessions today after waiting a month to get an appointment. Been having some knee pain for almost a year now…started round the time of my Australia trip. I bought a new pair of tennis shoes, after having the same pair for almost 2 years (what can I say, I really liked them). I started having knee issues, that progressed into full blown pain for the past 6 months. The ortho I went to, recommended home exercises because while I didn’t have arthrisits, I did need to strenghten the muscles in my knees, because due to weight issues and general wear and tear there was some cartilage deterioration, but strenghtening the muscle could alleviate that.

I admit, I wasn’t doing the home exercises like I shoud have been (the 2nd time I actually lost the pamphlet on what exercises I should do), and more travels, I still had pain. So last month, the Doc reccommended acquatic therapy. So today was the first day assessment for the acquatic PT. $50 a copay per session, with the ortho rec at least 2x for 6 that would be $600!!!

The PT suggested I try out a couple of sessions or more and then just joining the local wellness center for $35 a month, and just go to official PT sessions once a week, with at home exercises 2x a week.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t been good with the at home stuff. If I had been, maybe the pain would be gone by now…so I’m thinking I’ll just have to bite the bullet and pay for the 6 weeks of sessions (while also on a dedicated work plan) so that I can at least see results in time for my trip to London in May.

Luckily enough, just so happened to be getting a bonus from work for good performance, and it’s just enough to get me through 6 weeks of sessions….and it’s money I never planned to get, so it’s not part of my budget…so YAY!

Next week after Mardi Gras will be my first pool sessions! So here to lessening knee pain and better health!

This is a completely different topic, but we have a surprising leader in the Chicago mayoral election. Lori Lightfoot is leading Toni Preckwinkle and William Daley. There will be a run-off for the top two, both of whom will apparently be black women. Eighty percent of the vote is in, so it’s probably too late for a last minute Daley charge. I voted for Lightfoot but did not expect her to make the finals. It just goes to show you.

I’ve got a little more than 2 months before the next trip and i’m willing to pay for the detected PT rather than the home stuff (which I really wasn’t doing right or when I should) so that I can enjoy my time and to a bit more activities that I didn’t cause of my knee pain.

@Omnes Omnibus: My cousin is a physical therapist and she says her patients tell her PT must stand for pain and torture.

@lamh36: That all sounds good. Have you ever tried using a foam roller? It’s great for breaking up knots in muscles in your legs–and elsewhere but legs are probably the easiest to do. Using the foam roller on a regular basis can help keep the muscles looser and they work a bit better. It’s sort of like stretching.

    @Mike J:

“On Monday, though, the temperature hit 20.3C in Ceredigion, west Wales: the highest February temperature ever recorded in Britain and the first time the thermometer had breached 20C in winter. The BBC weather account tweeted it out with a gif of the sunshine icon and the same excitable breathlessness with which Springwatch would announce it had found a new type of vole. My response contained a single word, repeated seven times. It began with F.

Because this isn’t good, is it? However enjoyable the unreasonable sunshine feels, whatever feeling of relief it instils in you after weeks of grey sky and Brexit, the idea of beach temperatures in February should be scaring the living shit out of you. It shouldn’t be possible to wander round London half-naked in February without bits of you falling off. There is a fairly direct inverse correlation between your ability to go out without a jacket at this latitude in winter and a polar bear’s likelihood of surviving the winter – yet the population of Britain wandered round with their shirts undone looking pleased with themselves. Nation of animal lovers my arse. Something has gone wrong.”

I just find Cory Booker weird. Joaquin Castro is not ready for prime time. Amy Klobuchar – I am sorry but she comes across as a kindergarten teacher or PTA president. I am not excited about losing Sherrod Browns Senate seat. I’ll vote for any of them if they’re the Democratic candidate but not one I see myself falling in love with.

We made it to the cabin this evening, the heater is trying to catch up to 68 from 54, not too bad. and our lovely neighbor is helping dig us a parking spot because there’s three feet of ice and snow there.
I kind of worried that I was doing a lot of whining on the drive south about all the snow and the lack of electricity until my nephew-in-law sent me this:

    https://komonews.com/news/local/epic-gridlock-winter-storm-creates-115-mile-backup-along-snow-clogged-i-5-in-oregon

This is what we drove through, just ahead of the closure. The side with all the stopped cars is the northbound lane(s) I think, because there was more traffic on that side than on the southbound when we were traveling. We hit the same amount of snow at Mt Shasta but it was only for a few hours, although the northbound side was backed up for miles to make the idiots put on chains. The snow there was pretty thick but not so much that we wanted to stop.

Anyway, thanks for your company while we were on the road.

Somehow finding out that Wilmer true believers doxxed the woman who asked St BS a question that he got all grumpy about is the least surprising thing that happened today. I’ve gone from being supportive in the primary to actually loathing him and his very white person of privilege camp followers.

We joke where I live about Boulder, CO but seriously, so many of the senior Wilmer supporters I’ve seen at every D event need to open their eyes about their white male privilege and that asking people not like them to be the front line in their revolution is pretty damned rich.

@Mai Naem mobile: I’m not feeling psyched either. Sometimes I wonder if 2008 spoiled us. We had a candidate who inspired us and made us believe not in him but in the promise of the country. “Yes we can” was a powerful call, and maybe it could have produced an enduring coalition, if we had been prepared for the economic collapse and Republican obstruction. I don’t see anyone in the field right now who can move us this way. Maybe Beto but he’s still wet behind the ears.

Then, to follow him with the at least eqiually charismatic and far more self-disciplined Barack Obama? I mean, damn. it really isn’t fair to other decent and competent Democratic candidates. Both Bill and Barack were really once in a lifetime candidates and we had both of them in our lifetimes. Wishing for another is unreasonable.

I can give you a good example of how it fits in.

A couple of days ago you posted an AOC tweet about (roughly quoted), “We are in charge now, if you don’t like the GND, either suggest something better, or shut up”. Something along the lines of that.

You were offended, but you were quoting out of context.

The GND is a list of aspirations. It’s not legislation and it’s not policy.

If you read the twitter thread, AOC was pushing back hard against all the neggeds who had come out of the woodwork to trash the GND. Fake econonimists who said the US can’t afford it. Fake popualists who said people don’t want a living wage. Fake Scientists who said 12 years was wrong. Fake after fake after fake, trying to attach “concrete” costs like no more airtravel, to something that is merely aspirational.

Today, she was in the House ripping the Credit Check Industries a new one, getting them to admit, they steal the data, don’t protect the public at all, exist to protect the Lenders and extort the public, and 20% of their so called data is bogus or wrong.

@Jay: I try to avoid the responses to any politician’s tweets because the twitter threads tend to be filled with rage. This will only get worse as the Presidential race heats up. You’re right that we’re going to have to be super vigilant going forward about how any public figure’s statements are presented. Too much room for distortion and other shenanigans.
