Looks like the last thread had 200+ comments so here’s a new one while the committee is on break. My impressions so far: Republicans are shitting themselves trying to show that an admitted liar told lies for someone other than the liar who employed him. Jim Jordan, a lawyer, has been made to look like a fool by an admitted fool and obviously terrible lawyer. Meadows’ attempt to show that Trump is not a racist by having a black woman employed by Trump stand behind him was horrible, and Cohen’s response, asking why the grandson of a Holocaust survivor would work for Trump, was cutting.

I wonder how much of this is planned for the last Dem questioners, just before the evening news cycle starts, when trump is drowsy and huffing minibar toblerones, like say a high-profile, media-savvy freshman whose questions are bound to attract eyeballs in any case? Is AOC the one who’s going to ask about NDAs, mistresses and abortions? (I think she’s on the committee)
and I can’t believe I’m quoting Mona Fucking Charen
Yarrow
@plato: I quoted that in the thread below. That is the most amazing statement. He’s got the Republicans’ number.
Yarrow
I love that Trump is in Vietnam for this. So poetic.

In My Cousin Vinny, when Pesci dares the DA to voir dire Marisa Tomei, the lesson is that a witness can both improve their credibility and diminish yours at the same time, if the witness can credibly answer questions. It’s not a “can’t-lose scenario” but a high risk-high reward one.

If Chairman Cummings has not already done so, he should say this: “Mr Jordan the reason this committee is having liars and convicted felons testify is that these are the individuals President Trump surrounded himself with. We did not choose them, President Trump did.”

Captain Higgins has become one of the nation’s most influential cops, regularly speaking to law enforcement agencies across America. Higgins is a strong advocate of what he calls… “The sacred oath of the badge”. He states that the sworn oath is not to a Sheriff, or a Chief, or a Marshal… It’s an oath of allegiance to the Constitution.

@Yarrow: They all make money off of reporting “what really happened”. One of the talking heads on MSNBC this morning talked about how we’re a reality tv nation. We want to know all the gossip and shenanigans. Not because we care about the rule of law, and how that affects everyone as a nation, but so we can hold our noses up and pretend we’re so much better than that.
Also it’s another way of trying to shut him up. They’re all going to be directly, or indirectly, indicted in the Russia/Trumpov crime ring of getting him elected. All of their actions, and inaction, are going to be exposed. Just like how 1/2 of the gang of eight all remained silent when briefed on how Russia was directly aiding Trumpov, even going as far as telling Obama that they would politicize it if Obama tried to warn the American people wtf was going on. The key word in your comment is “imagine”, because the only deal that Kim will cut with Trump will amount to recognition and acceptance of North Korea as a nuclear power. raven
This dumb motherfucker is back with the boxes.
plato
This thug thinks cohen gives a shit about him when he taking on the biggest thug around?
Elizabelle
@raven: Boxes, boxes, it’s always the boxes.
Lapassionara
@gene108: And Sanford’s seat is now occupied by a Democrat. Nice. Thanks, RWNJ’s!

@germy: We elected some great Dems here in CA last year. Was nice to see Lawrence O’Donnell give props to Katie Porter last night.

Is this payback for the Afghanistan trip sandbag?

But he didn’t know who Cohen was until today … and then said since he was arrested.
Crawdad guy. Worried about film and book deals. LANNY DAVIS!
opiejeanne
Who was that idiot who basically said “How dare you come here today while the president is in Hanoi?”
Was that Gym Jordan?
Jeffro
Jaysus but this Higgins is dumb…
They’re trying to wrap the blessed “boxes” into their FBI conspiracy
bemused
But, but book deals!
Elizabelle
His instinct. Many of the men he has arrested over his career. The ones who are penitent until they get out again.
He should take up novelisting.
catclub
@J R in WV:
exactly my point. likewise, Trump will still be hated even if he does come up with something with NKorea. I am not claiming he will be able to do so.
I was responding to the idea that Trump thinks a NKorea deal will save his 2020 campaign.
germy
How did Higgins get another swipe at Cohen? I thought they all get only one chance. Will I be hearing from some of the Democrats again?
different-church-lady
@zhena gogolia: I’m surprised the Gross National Product hasn’t just plummeted under Trump.
Elizabelle
@opiejeanne:
Per Yarrow.
Martin
BTW, this is why we shouldn’t resist impeachment despite the makeup of the Senate. Impeachment hearings would flip over every rock and put it in public view. Let the republicans stand there and say that Trumps crimes aren’t crimes. Let them survive re-election. At some point they’re going to realize that their future requires them to bury Trump, it’s up to the Democrats to force that realization with public hearings.

@germy: you know who should feel shame? the GOP…sure, but…the press….the NYT from the very city in which Trump played his mob-lite cons for years. They missed it all. Every single story. But, by god they got those emails. In fact, if I worked the political desk at the NYT, I would train my investigative sight on the NY FBI office and their role in the Clinton nonsense, which served as Comey’s stated reason for making the public statement he did. Shameless fucksticks.
??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??
@Martin:
I think you might be right. From what I’m reading here, they’re panicking and this hearing is not going well for them. Imagine if a sustained barrage of these types of hearings kept hitting the GOP over and over going into an election year.
plato
Looks like media minions are starting to get a clue?

Mrs. D. Ranged in AZ
@Elizabelle: He’s not afraid to fly. Several reasons–most important being he doesn’t have a safe plane to do it in. He had to borrow one from China to fly to Singapore. Also, he says it’s family tradition (which it is). And it’s more luxurious and comfortable (supposedly).
plato
Pretty much the gist of it.
Elizabelle
@Martin: Agreed.
I never believe the smarter than everybody types who tell us why useful stuff cannot be done.
Bring the public along. Although: do you really want to inaugurate Mike Pence? The GOP owns Trump. Make them wear him, all of him.
plato
Mrs. D. Ranged in AZ
@Elizabelle:
Agree! Like the saggy, orange, sweaty meat suit he is.
Elizabelle
@Mrs. D. Ranged in AZ: Yeah. I thought he might not have a safe plane.

This woman is daughter of a congresscritter, and has no professional experience listed anywhere other than being a state delegate in recent years and now congresscritter.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Yeah. Heard that at the time and thought, um hmmmmm….

what is this filibuster about? have they run out of ways to try to discredit Cohen?
Jeffro
Interesting plea from Rep Roy right now…”this is all a circus/waste of time/non-priority”. Um, agreed on the circus part…
Jeffro
@debit: yes. That is EXACTLY what it is.
And now Rep Plaskett noting that Cohen was vice chair of the RNC…
Jeffro
WOW…asking directly for Ethics Commission and possible criminal charges for Gaetz…
Elizabelle
“Thank God the Democratic majority can walk and chew gum at the same time.” — Rep. Plaskett. RE all the bloviating from GOP about the more important things they should be doing …
Oooh, and she’s just brought up his finance chairing the RNC.
Cohen says he was registered as a Democrat until Steve Wynn noticed that and insisted he switch.
debit
@Jeffro: Yep. I was waiting on that.
opiejeanne
I really like Ms Plasket. Really like her.
Who is the guy behind Cohen’s left shoulder?

Stacey Plaskett represents the US Virgin Islands.

Raven Onthill
Is anyone else afraid that someone might get nuked (or some awful but still less-horrible thing) because Trump is losing it?
R-Jud
@Raven Onthill: I pretty much expect that daily, for any reason (Diet Coke not cold enough? BOMBS AWAY!), but it is particularly heightened as an expectation today.
Mrs. D. Ranged in AZ
@Raven Onthill: Only sane people (which most of the jackals here I include in this category but just barely ;-)
Elizabelle
@Raven Onthill: No. Control yourself.
Elizabelle
@catclub: Yeah, it’s been a parade of greatest hits, hasn’t it?
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Raven Onthill: much as I despise trump, I don’t think we can blame the India-Pakistan dispute on him. I wouldn’t bet that he could find Pakistan on a blank map of the world
C Stars
@Raven Onthill: I think I worry more about the mid to long-term effects–today we see that despite all of the evidence, the GOP will happily support/make excuses for him, AND he’s making friends with nuclear-armed dictators around the world, AND the emergency declaration thing–I dunno, it kinda seems like all the pieces are in place for a dictatorial takeover. The only way the GOP and its international oligarch friends can stay in power is by breaking the law and breaking western democracy (further), and clearly they won’t hesitate to do so…
But that gets dark pretty quickly so I try not to go down that road.
The Moar You Know
@Raven Onthill: Not even a little. That’s frankly a ridiculous proposition.

The Moar You Know
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: I would not bet more than pocket cash that he could find the US.
Mrs. D. Ranged in AZ
@The Moar You Know: While it’s definitely over-the-top, I think it’s not a stretch that we should worry about Trump trying to start a conflict in order to distract from his troubles. I could see him bombing Venezuela or something like that. Couldn’t you?
The Moar You Know
@Mrs. D. Ranged in AZ: Nope. The man is a coward to his core. He’s not going to do jack shit to anybody.
Jeffro
@Kent: Oops indeed! Keep it up, GOP – keep committing crimes for your god-king, see what it gets you.
I mean seriously, for THIS guy you’re willing to pay any price? THIS GUY??

@Gin & Tonic: hey now! That voiceless velar fricative exist in English, too! Consider ‘ugh’ – it’s just we don’t think of it as a letter. Same as the German sound in ‘Ich’ – we got it at the beginning of Hugh, but don’t even recognise it.
Lingua-Man, AWAAAAY!!!
Tenar Arha
@Yarrow:
So, I think this is Meadows deliberately conflating the law about listing yourself as a foreign agent if you work or lobby for a government. It’s not the SF—86 which is to obtain a security clearance, where you must report all kinds of foreign contacts, relatives, friendships, and business relationships.
(~*cough-Kushner*~)
So, Meadows is wrong. Because apparently Cohen only worked with foreign NGO’s which means he doesn’t have to list them. (Pace that a lot of authoritarian regimes don’t have clear boundaries between government & non-government entities, which is probably why the FARA needs to be amended somehow).
Brachiator
@The Moar You Know:
Double Nope.
Trump is a coward. He likes to talk tough, but there ain’t nothing behind his bluster.
JMG
It may not surprise you to learn that the line on ABC after the hearing was “Cohen provided no direct evidence of collusion.” Like the evidence of other crimes is unimportant. He didn’t have pictures of Putin handing Trump sacks of money and documents. The one local news reporter (not an ABC affiliate) there said, “nothing new.” If Mueller has pictures of Putin handing Trump sacks of money and documents and displays them, the coverage won’t change a bit.
Brachiator
@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
In the old days, the US might take the lead in trying to defuse the situation. In these times, not so much.
And I think that Pakistan is flying American made F-16s. Should give us some say in deployment.
Mrs. D. Ranged in AZ
@The Moar You Know: @Brachiator: I agree he himself is a coward, I think he is fine with it so long as his ass isn’t in danger. I mean, he’s not the one who would be in the landing force and he wouldn’t be flying the plane. He doesn’t back down when it comes to other people making sacrifices. Look at what he did to the Farmers that supported him. So I think he is perfectly capable of committing our troops into something phenomenally stupid and dangerous.
Elizabelle
@JMG:
ABC. As in “Anything But Context”?
Jackasses. Why I don’t watch US news anymore. The CBSN hearings feed was good, but turned it off once the talking heads arrived with the break.
Gravenstone
@plato: Fucker clearly doesn’t read the news. And if Faux Noise doesn’t cover it in some fashion, he’ll never know about it. And here, it came back to bite him on his ample ass. Seriously, it’s been in the news at least the last couple of days that Cohen was going to paint Trump in a seriously unflattering light, and that he was bringing receipts (essentially literally). Trump has no one to blame but himself for this sudden slap to the face.
Another Scott
@Mrs. D. Ranged in AZ: Yup. He did throw a bunch of cruise missiles at Syria, after all. But since that was a pointless gesture that did nothing maybe he can be talked out of doing it again.
There’s little doubt that he’ll pout and try to change the subject away from the hearings today.
Cheers,
Scott.

@Mrs. D. Ranged in AZ:
Trump finds it easy to steal money from people, or to punish children. He has not been as eager to send men and women off to war, to put their lives at risk.
But we are just playing the percentages here.
Raven Onthill
@C Stars: we are, I think, on the same wavelength. Trump is in the middle of delicate negotiations, and his desire to harm someone – anyone – is now very great. He might, for instance, give away, or at least undercut, South Korea. Consider also what Kim Jong-un or Vladimir Putin might offer to do for Trump, while Trump is enraged. There is also Venezuela. And there is the possibility of aggravating, rather than cooling, the conflict between India and Pakistan.
@The Moar You Know: powerful cowards can be terribly dangerous. It takes brave people to make peace. One has to trust. On the other hand, he does seem to be afraid to fire someone to their face, so perhaps you are right.
@Elizabelle: Please stop telling us that everything is OK and that Trump won’t do anything too horrible when, in fact, he has exceeded our worst fears.
Frankensteinbeck
@plato:
HOLY SHIT. Folks, forget the rest of this circus. That’s the payoff from our perspective. People say Cohen has the receipts, and he has just agreed to share those receipts with Democrats who will certainly make them public.
Elizabelle
@Raven Onthill: You brought up nuclear, dickhead. And don’t put words in my mouth.
ETA: I don’t think this is all right, at all. But you smell of urine and hysteria, every time you show up here.
Chris Johnson
@Raven Onthill: Putin doesn’t want to do anything nice for Trump. This is the part where Trump implodes and Putin smirks a lot. The idea is that it’s already gone so far (there’s doubtless plenty else: MOST of the Republicans went full traitor already) that to reveal everything would be the end of America as a functioning entity. This is also why the Republicans are all-in: they are also traitors.
Putin doesn’t want to save Trump. Probably why Trump is currying favor with Kim and so on. Trump would like to run away, but Putin is not a safe haven for him (I used to think that would be the end game, but that’s naive of me)
Ruckus

@geg6: Right there with you. He hasn’t come close to exceeding my worst fears. He’s kind of incompetent and his team is full of clowns. If they were actually smart, competent people it would be a lot worse.

Frankensteinbeck
@Yarrow:
Most of Trump’s presidency has gone the way I expected. He’s been a little more active in ‘stop doing X military thing’ than I predicted. McConnell has been a little worse than I predicted, letting the shutdown drag on and giving Trump permission to do the national emergency thing. In general, this has been the shit-show of incompetence, cowardice, and malice I’ve put my odds on.
JWR
The hearing is reconvening now.

we need a new thread
Jeffro
@Frankensteinbeck:
Good analysis.
Also sends a few chills down my spine when I think of how far a non-moron, non-corrupt, non-impulsive-blowhard with the same agenda could have gotten during the past two years. In short, where would we be with a competent, smart, restrained trumpov? Yikes now I have a few more chills…best not to think about it, I suppose.
Yarrow
I missed this first back and forth about the form. Cohen did something on break. What did he say?
Frankensteinbeck
@Jeffro:
I can give you a bit of reassurance. The system that gave Trump the presidency selects against competence. In particular, the Republican primary voting base (and I think most of their general election base) wants a moron. Trump validates them.
No, McConnell is the competent (although thankfully not the genius his reputation paints) irredeemably evil fascist who has gotten into a position of high power. He is the one to fear.
Rommie
We Must Needs a new thread?
Dan B
@Elizabelle: I was much more concerned about Trump / Pence in the first year of their term. But I was just as afraid, or more afraid, that they would figure out how to mobilize an extremist unit of the CIA or military to stage a domestic incident that would provide an excuse for some crackdiwn shirt of martial law. That seems less likely as the billionaire wingers seem cautious about the internet blowing their cover in an overt act.
What baffles me is Bolton and Pompeo have howled in the past about a weak/feminized military. Currently they seem less prone to glorious military adventures. Is it because they would be blamed for any disasters niw that they would be culpable or is it because the all volunteer military has already exceeded its limits? The military can be expanded only if unemployment increases ir if the pay is so lucrative that it bankrupts the US? Is Eric Prince running into practical constraints that can only be overcome only by turning the US into a version of North Korea?
It’s puzzling that the saber rattlers seem subdued since 2016. Trifecta… but no cigar? (Pardon the old ugly-macho meme but it seems appropriate since it illuminates the roots of their bro fantasies.)
Dorothy A. Winsor
@Yarrow: It was about those form Meadows was raging about, how Cohen didn’t disclose some clients on them. Cohen said his four lawyers continue to believe the language of the form doesn’t require their disclosure.
Elie
@Yarrow:
We are not yet out of this mess, even given that these are clowns and incompetents. I won’t breathe again until this is over — meaning, he, they and most of the GOP are out of office and new, sane people elected. The wheels on this are moving slowly. Maybe necessarily so to reflect the rule of law, but damned slow for my emotional stability and patience….
Yarrow
Ha! Cohen says Trump said he didn’t want to release his tax returns because he might end up under audit. Trump’s always claimed he couldn’t release them because he was under audit. Cohen says he understood Trump is not under audit based on his comments.
Yarrow
@Dorothy A. Winsor: Thanks. I missed the part about what the lawyers said.
@Elie: I think things are moving amazingly fast given the immense size of the issue.
