As I mentioned in the comments, today is Transgender Day of Visibility, held every March 31, intended to honor and celebrate transgender and gender non-conforming people (GNC) — both those visible and those invisible.

It started a decade ago but only took off a few years ago, and is intended as a complement to the annual Nov. 20 Transgender Day of Remembrance, which honors the memories of that year’s victims of anti-trans violence — usually always all trans women, the vast majority of them trans women of color, in particular Black trans women. For years, TDOR was the only national/international event for trans people, and while it is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this, it’s also, needless to say, more than a bit depressing. Hence TDOV, which focuses on the living.

It’s all too rare that trans/GNC people have chance to celebrate who we are, and it’s also a chance to express our defiance of attempts to eradicate us from public life (the Talibaptists have a literal five-point plan to do so, and under the Trump administration, and red state governments,  they’ve made significant progress on several fronts).

But perhaps the most important aspect is being visible. These days roughly 37 percent of Americans know someone who’s trans/GNC. Think you don’t know someone trans, well you actually probably do. There’s still an unfortunately-huge number of us who never leave the closet, and for those who do, there’s can often be a desire to fly under the radar, to blend in. For those in red states, this can be a matter of literal survival. But it’s also because — unlike coming out as LGB, which tells who people who you are — coming out as trans, invariably puts the focus on who you were. At least for a binary trans woman like me, i.e. I’m someone who prefers to be seen as a woman who’s trans.

First things first- it is pretty clear that I need to spend more time around here in the comments and whip you fuckers into shape, because I don’t know when we became such delicate fucking flowers. Judging the reactions to the post about Pete Buttigieg below, you all would think I killed the man in a hate crime then pissed on his grave. Fer fuck’s sake, people. I like the guy and donated and right now he’s in my top tier of candidates.

But let’s be real, here- if one nasty op-ed from a Bern-or-Bust guy is all it takes to sink his candidacy, maybe, just maybe, he doesn’t deserve to be the nominee, let alone President? I don’t agree with everything in the piece, some of it I found interesting, particularly in how other people may view him, but it’s just some guy’s opinion. I like to read differing views about shit. If I didn’t explore what other people said about things and then MAKE MY OWN FUCKING DECISION, I’d probably still be a god damned Republican, and lemme assure you, no good can come from that.

We’ve got a lot of great candidates- let’s look at them warts and all. And you can’t be afraid of what Republicans and the media are going to say in the general election, because THEY ARE GOING TO SAY IT ANYWAY. So just simmer down and roll with the punches. Y’all re going to have a heart attack and the way things are going, we Juicers are dropping like god damned flies as it is.

Second, the bathroom downstairs is a new color:

It used to be the same powder blue color as the kitchen, but I was tired of it, so I just went in to the local hardware store and picked out a color. Fuck it. If I on’t like it after a couple of months, we’ll just change it again. For now I like it. Oh- the color is intercoastal by Valspar. It’s darker than I expected. Also I hate that mirror/medicine cabinet but it came with the house so it is there for now until I find something cheap that I like.

Third- Any suggestions on how to clean a mattress? I was changing my sheets and the bed was uncovered, and Thurston went outside, came back in, and got dirty pawprints all over the mattress. Just a normal detergent with a damp cloth?

Lot of news about Pete Buttegieg, someone whose candidacy interests me, but here is a pretty scathing review of the man:

Before I dive into Shortest Way Home’s account of the life and career of Peter Buttigieg, let me be up front about my bias. I don’t trust former McKinsey consultants. I don’t trust military intelligence officers. And I don’t trust the type of people likely to appear on “40 under 40” lists, the valedictorian-to-Harvard-to-Rhodes-Scholarship types who populate the American elite. I don’t trust people who get flattering reams of newspaper profiles and are pitched as the Next Big Thing That You Must Pay Attention To, and I don’t trust wunderkinds who become successful too early. Why? Because I am somewhat cynical about the United States meritocracy. Few people amass these kind of résumés if they are the type to openly challenge authority. Noam Chomsky says that the factors predicting success in our “meritocracy” are a “combination of greed, cynicism, obsequiousness and subordination, lack of curiosity and independence of mind, [and] self-serving disregard for others.” So when journalists see “Harvard” and think “impressive,” I see it and think “uh-oh.”

I try my best to be fair, though. I thought former Michigan gubernatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed was suspect because of his shiny résumé. But after examining his proposals and listening to his speeches, I realized he was the real deal. He had done well in school, but he was genuinely outraged by preventable human misery, talked openly about taking on corporate oligarchy, and had bold plans for revolutionizing health care, environmental policy, and just about everything else. I have lots of friends who are the products of elite institutions, but became critical of those institutions after being exposed to their inner workings. If Pete Buttigieg is one of those, great!

Pete Buttigieg is not one of those.

Not sure how I feel about many of the criticisms, but it’s well worth a read.

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: California Wildflowers

From faithful left-coast garden correspondent Scout211:

Spring has come a little later than usual in Northern California, due to our wonderfully long rainy season (which is still happening, thank you very much). The wildflowers are finally coming out and beginning their spring showing. All of these were taken on our property in rural Calaveras County.

The top pic is a closeup of our rosemary bushes, a favorite of our local bees. You can see one of them in the center of the pic.

The second pic is of a field of what I think are foothill poppies. They are tinier, yellower versions of our state flower, the California poppy.

The third pic is of a field of blue dicks, one of our earliest and most abundant wildflowers in our area.

We brought home half a flat of pansies yesterday, which cheered me up no end. Murphy the Trickster God willing, I’m gonna spend the afternoon splitting them out into pots, so that I’ve got something encouraging to look at while I commence the great yard clean-up and clear-out.
