Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Fight them, without becoming them!

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

“But what about the lurkers?”

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Books are my comfort food!

Accountability, motherfuckers.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

Survived the drive home, got all of my parent’s possessions in their house, and my computer booted despite having a failing hard drive that I have to fix tomorrow, so I am sitting here in my boxer shorts checking everything I missed and thinking I might just nuke my gmail.

Lily and Samantha are fucking ROAD WARRIORS. We put them in the back seat in their beds at 8:30, and they slept the ENTIRE way from Isle of Palms to Morgantown and did not get up to pee once. I thought about waking them the second time we stopped for gas, but the whole “let sleeping dogs lie” thing kicked in, and they made it pretty much the entire damned trip, which is just bonkers.

It seems like every other news cycle, Elizabeth Warren is unveiling an impressive idea or policy proposal.

Massachusetts Senator and Democratic Presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren became the highest profile politician to support right to repair legislation in the United States. Wednesday, Warren outlined out a sweeping plan to support family farms and diminish the power of corporate agriculture on Wednesday. At the top of the list, she supports a national right-to-repair law for tractors and other agricultural equipment. That means she supports the simple idea that people who own a tractor should be able to repair it without permission from John Deere or any other manufacturer.

@hilts: I really like her ideas, from a policy standpoint I think her background with the banking stuff and budgets gives her a real leg up. Isn’t it about time for a deep response from Trump, something about Pocahantos and fake Indians.

Open thread? I am bummed out. My assistant handed in her notice today. It wasn’t really a surprise; when she was hired I knew that she would be looking for a job in her own field but wanted to wait until she was more comfortable with the differences between American and Indian accounting practices* before seriously looking. I agreed to be a reference for her, but a little voice in the back of my head kept telling me to give a mediocre one so that she would stay. I managed to ignore it. I had never had a really good assistant before, and I did not realize how much easier and more productive may days could be with the right person helping out. Now I am spoiled.

*Don’t ask me. I am am not an accountant in either system. Something about debits and credits being on opposite sides of the ledger.

If she was valuable to you — and it sounds as though she was — I am sorry that you’re going to lose a valued employee.

There is surely someone out there who can become your next assistant, and do an awesome job. Just be aware (I’m sure you are) that the next “right person” may not look at all like the woman who handed in her notice today.

Good luck in finding the next perfect assistant!

Just wanted to write this down because it really pisses me off. (Long but maybe some will find interesting.)
I’m seeing this in today’s NYTimes:
Interior Nominee Intervened to Block Report on Endangered Species (Eric Lipton, March 26, 2019)

Their analysis found that two of the pesticides, malathion and chlorpyrifos, were so toxic that they “jeopardize the continued existence” of more than 1,200 endangered birds, fish and other animals and plants, a conclusion that could lead to tighter restrictions on use of the chemicals.

Bold mine. Some might recall that Chlorpyrifos has long been implicated in damage to developing brains including human brains. I.e. do not forgive these Interior/EPA appointees; they are evil. (I do not forgive deliberate mass brain damage.)
Polluting Developing Brains — EPA Failure on Chlorpyrifos

Among the most worrisome findings are the corroborative results from several prospective cohort studies of children, which show an inverse dose–response effect of prenatal exposure to chlorpyrifos on cognition at 7 years of age.2 In a subgroup of inner-city children 5.9 to 11.2 years of age from one of the cohorts, magnetic resonance imaging revealed structural anomalies in the brains of the most highly exposed children in the superior temporal, posterior middle temporal, and inferior postcentral gyri bilaterally, and in the superior frontal gyrus, gyrus rectus, cuneus, and precuneus along the mesial wall of the right hemisphere.3 Cognitive and behavioral processes subserved by these cortical regions include attention, receptive language, social cognition, reward, emotion, and inhibitory control; complementary functional deficits were also observed in a number of auditory attention skills. Deformations were detected in the dorsal and mesial surfaces of the left superior frontal gyrus, which supports executive function — a critical set of mental skills that permit people to plan, organize, and complete tasks throughout life.

Seven-Year Neurodevelopmental Scores and Prenatal Exposure to Chlorpyrifos, a Common Agricultural Pesticide (2011)
Brain anomalies in children exposed prenatally to a common organophosphate pesticide (PDF, 2012)
Developmental neurotoxicity of the organophosphorus insecticide chlorpyrifos: from clinical findings to preclinical models and potential mechanisms (08 August 2017)

I will always love Cole for his story — years ago — that every morning he says to Lily “Who’s the best doggie? Who’s the best doggie?” until she gets the zooms and runs around the house. I don’t know if Lily has aged out of the zooms, but i like to think that is still the morning ritual.

@WaterGirl: When I sit a particular trio of Standard Poodles, I wake this tribe up with “Is it a good day to be a puppy!?”. The elder male one – who is patient if I want a bit of a late start – does not even lift his head until he hears those words. And when I ask “Are you ready for a walk?”, all three of them go mental. It’s a lot of big dog energy to harness, and also tremendous fun!

@Adam L Silverman: No such thing as that with poodles, tho’ I prefer the bigger ones to the littluns. My face and nose are nearly healed 10 days after a Chihuahua attacked me. Not the dog’s fault – little kids who knew she wasn’t friendly handed her to me. I’ll be wiser next time. But when people ask me what happened to my face, I just tell them that I was attacked by some little bitch named Delilah.

@seaboogie: Poodles are such wonderful dogs, given 10% of a chance. Scary-bright, I mean, almost as clever as cats. Non-allergenic, don’t shed – if treated like actual dogs, they’re amazing. Their rep has been feminized for decades, esp the toy sized ones, and it gets transferred.

@SectionH: I call the senior male poodle MacGuyver, because * shenanigans*. Picture Anthony Bourdain as a poodle (said pup has a rakishly handsome atypical physiognomy). Would probably love a small poodle pup too, but I love the chill energy of a big smart dog best. And yes, poodles are regal and imperious in the way that cats are. I liken them to Katherine Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby.
