Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Innocent people do not delay justice.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

No one could have predicted…

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

Peter Ross’s, AKA efgoldman’s, Obituary

Thanks to commenter SiubhanDuinne, here’s Peter’s obituary:

ROSS, Peter F. Age 73, of Cumberland, RI, formerly of Belmont, MA, and Brookline, MA, passed away March 25. He was, for nearly 20 years, a well-known voice to Boston as an announcer for classical radio station WCRB before beginning his second career working with Fidelity Investments in 1995, where he remained until retiring in 2015. He was a dedicated musician, staying enmeshed in Boston’s classical and amateur music communities after leaving the air, serving as concert announcer for several community bands and at the annual Boston Festival of Bands held each June at Faneuil Hall. He was particularly involved with the Metropolitan Wind Symphony, where he performed as concert announcer for more than 20 years and also served as a member of the board. He was a 1963 graduate of Brookline High School and 1968 graduate of Boston University. He is survived by his brother; his wife Marilyn; his daughter Katherine, son-in-law Matthew, and beloved grandchildren Miranda and Ethan, to whom he was utterly devoted and by whom he was utterly smitten. A Memorial Reception will be held in April. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Metropolitan Wind Symphony, the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, or any local music education program in your community that serves to teach and inspire the next generation of musicians.

View the online memorial for Peter F. ROSS

Also, while I know a lot of folks are concerned that something seems to have happened to his comments, when I do a keyword search at the comments tab in the dashboard, they’re all still in there. So this is probably one of the joys of WP. Just know they’re not gone. We now know there is a problem. And I’ll make sure Cole and Alain know so we can ensure they don’t go poof.

Fuckem!

I was in college at the time and remember every ‘BUR, ‘CRB, or ‘GBH overnight host, his (or her) signature tune, and general taste in music. Those were the days when Bill Caveness read me all of War and Peace one cooking-of-dinner at a time. Peter Ross was closer to me than anyone in my family. Dick Kay was my dad.

I used to work for a subsidiary of a non profit and knew the CEO for nearly 20 yrs and had never heard him swear once. Went to work there, first week needed to discuss something with him, sitting in his office, I found out he had two voices. His normal one, in which he spoke like a sailor, iow I understood every word, and his public voice in which he never used any swear words. EFG reminds me of this man, or vice versa if you will. He did teach me how to separate the two voices so that I could speak, say on TV and or in a public speaking manner. It is a skill that takes effort to learn.

Peter Benoit (1834 – 8 March 1901) was a Flemish/Belgian composer whose first teachers were his father and the village organist. He went to the Brussels Conservatory and in 1857 won the Belgian Prix de Rome with a cantata, “Le Meurtre d’Abel.” My first acquaintance with Benoit’s music was when I put on a recording of his fine Requiem on WCRB’s old Music Through the Night program. (Remember Peter Ross? One of the very best classical music announcers in the business.) Investigating further, I bought a copy of Benoit’s expansive and, I think, very interesting piano collection, Tales and Ballads, Op. 34 (1861). A good number of his other works, including the Flute Concerto and Piano Concerto, both subtitled Symphonic Tale, have since been recorded.

McGah’s new work for Narrator and Concert Band, which will be presented at the Band’s Winter Concert on Saturday, March 2, at 51 Walden in Concord. Peter was classical music announcer for twenty years on WGBH and WBUR, and spent fifteen years as overnight host on WCRB. It is believed that his tenure at WCRB was the longest in that time period for any announcer in any format, and certainly in classical radio. Peter has a longtime interest in music for band and wind ensemble, stemming from his days as a player in high school, college, and community bands. He has served as Master of Ceremonies and commentator for several Boston Festivals of Bands, in which the Concord Band participated. Peter is also the regular concert host and commentator for the Metropolitan Wind Symphony and appears with the Patrick Gilmore Society All-State Honors Community Band, the Middlesex Community Band, the Boston University Wind Ensemble, and others. He has performed pieces for band and narrator to texts by John F. Kennedy with the Boston University Alumni Band, traditional children’s and holiday stories with the Metropolitan Wind Symphony, and by Edgar Allen Poe with the Boston University Wind Ensemble.

    Record breaking! :-)

    RIP, EFG/Peter. We’ll remember you.

Best wishes to his family and all who loved him.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

@Steeplejack: mmm…red blend. Tried to get on an earlier flight, but they were all overbooked. Why is there such a crowd flying from Indianapolis to Atlanta today? The only good part is that I still have my upgrade on the later flight. Three extra hours in IND in exchange for 90 minutes in first class? Yeah, I got the short end of that one.

Sometimes just running the booth, doing station IDs every 30 and transmitter readings every three hours (“Hi, Susan Stamberg wherever you are”), sometimes announcing jazz and classical, but the hook was driving dad’s car at night with a self-programmed rock shift. We of course were all snooty in that special college kid way of never playing anything popular. “Hey kids, how does an hour of nothing but Can sound? Trick question, you’re about to find out.”

Locally, I’m very well known as a public asshole… in particular, a public music asshole. I’ll happily blat the shit out of whatever show is going on that night, and I’m fortunate enough to live in a small city (~120K) that has a lot of whatever show is going on. EFG’s dying wish is … interesting to me. Since my old friend Joe (a bass player I played in a number of bands with) around twenty years ago or so) died back in ’99, we here in Krusty the K-town (i.e. Kingston, Ontario) have had a musical instrument lending library that was set up in Joe’s honour (and you’d better believe that word is “honour” mfers). You can find it online at joesmill.org, and I’d like to recommend all of you to check it out. I’ve been donating time and money to that place for a lot of years; Joe was an old friend of mine, we lived in the same house for many years and played in quite a few bands together. As a charity concept to drive music education, it’s a really good one… and one of the basic precepts is that if you’re not actually around Krusty the K-town you’ll do fare better to set one up in your community than give money to us.

Just sayin’ that I think Mr. EFG would’ve really liked it, and that it’s worth investigating for you poor motherfuckers who have to live south of the border.

    Cheers,

A portion of a favorite song, The Living Bubba, would seem to fit:

Don’t give me no pity don’t give me no grief
Wit till I die for sympathy
Just help me with this amp and a guitar or two
I can’t die now ’cause I got another show to do
Don’t give me no preachin’ no self servin’
    I ain’t no angel but nobody’s deserving
I can dance on my own grave, Thank You!
But I can’t die now ’cause I got another show
Some people keep saying I can’t last long
But I got my bands I got my songs,
Liquor, beer, and nicotine to help me along
And I’m drunk and stubborn as they come
Chain smoking, guitar picking, til I’m gone,
    Gone, gone, gone gone

Had been frequenting/commenting on right wing blogs (e.g. Just One Minute) learning how to argue against conservatives and wingnuts in the GWBush administration and this place was a welcome mix of ages, politics, nationalities, genders, with a flat comment section (yay!) and decent community-driven troll-control.

Our public station used to have classical music from when the talking ended in the early evening until 5 am when BBC news aired. Now they have one canned show from 10 am til noon, and their own broadcast from noon til 2 pm. That’s it.
