Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Let there be snark.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

“More of this”, i said to the dog.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

This fight is for everything.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Everybody saw this coming.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

You cannot shame the shameless.

For some reason this reminds me of the story of Ferdinand the Bull.

Also, the kids are alright:

I’m at a weekend writing conference. It’s fun, but I’m freakin’ exhausted and it’s 9 pm on the second day.

Tomorrow we have morning sessions and lunch, and then I drive home.

My 8 month old lab found a treat on our walk earlier. He was tossing it into the air having the time of his life. He loves sticks but he doesn’t toss them in the air for shits and giggles. It turned out to be a deer leg. I stuck it in a tree once I could grab it.

Off topic, but I went to dinner with elderly family members tonight and they’re all gaga for Biden.

I think it’s nostalgia—they’re lifelong dem low information voters who have finally started to notice our political situation is dire and they want to revert to a simpler, more convivial time.

I tried to explain the current political devolution is due to republican fuckery and propaganda but they didn’t seem swayed. The politically disengaged don’t want to hear how the far-right got empowered and they especially don’t want to hear about all the hard and ugly shit we’re going to have to do to fix it.

It’s a form of magical thinking: Uncle Joe will pull his bitchin’ Camaro up on the white house lawn and we’ll all be transported back to the 90s.

That said, watching the Roger Ailes documentary last week made me realize how important feelings are for low-information voters. It doesn’t matter is shit is true as long as it feels true and makes them feel better about themselves.

We need to find a way to harness this blindness for ourselves—why the fuck should the republicans have a monopoly on manipulating the masses?

God, I miss Maine. May I ask where you’re at, geographically speaking? My folks had a house on Deer Isle, and sometimes I find myself wishing I had opted to move there rather than out to Colorado. (Only sometimes, but boy…lobster rolls. I could murder at least one lobster roll a day). Two of my sisters live in Biddeford and Kennebunk, respectively.
