Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Trump should be leading, not lying.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Bark louder, little dog.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Fight them, without becoming them!

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

We still have time to mess this up!

I really should read my own blog.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Goodbye to lots of trust building between MX Govt & Nielsen; many MX officials may feel some ‘comfort’ w/McAleenan as acting secretary. Yet, Mexico must be bracing for someone in the mold of Kobach pic.twitter.com/wL8P8Mvi6C

I've never once heard a reporter ask Potus on camera if he knows that USA signed the 1967 United Nations protocol/treaty on asylum /refugees. Intl law. Anyone has a right to apply (approval is difficult at best). Does he understand that? Could you ask? Seems not.

— Mark Murphy (@MarkMurphy2011) April 7, 2019

So who wants to guess that the next secretary of homeland security will be ‘acting’ for the rest of Trump’s term?

— Robert E Kelly (@Robert_E_Kelly) April 7, 2019

I have nothing to say. Rumor seems to be that Stephan Miller wants to reincarnate Attila the Hun.

Since the question will probably come up,

The acting Cabinet: Right now, @realDonaldTrump has an:
    –acting DHS secretary
    –acting Defense secretary
    –acting Interior secretary (Bernhardt nominated)
    –acting WH chief of staff

(also an acting UN ambassador, although that position has been downgraded from Cab level)

[1] long history of arguments: The hostile border between Trump and the head of DHS – Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and President Trump have had a contentious relationship as illegal border crossings increase. (Josh Dawsey, Nick Miroff, May 25, 2018)

    Dear Secretary (ret.) Kirstjen Neilsen:

This is to formally invite you to attend the Monaco F1 Grand Prix races next year, as the guest of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene. You are welcome to bring up to 3 relatives or friends, and will have a suite in the Palais du Prince for your convenience.

Of course you will view the races from the Royal Balcony overlooking the race’s finish line in the company of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene.

We recommend you travel via KLM and arrive through Amsterdam’s airport, where the Prince’s private jet will meet you for transit to Monaco proper!

Thank you for sharing your presence with the Royal family of the Principality of Monaco!!

So who wants to guess that the next secretary of homeland security will be ‘acting’ for the rest of Trump’s term?

This is something that really pisses me off – the GOP didn’t put up with recess appointments done the same way, so they sued and won. All decisions made by the recess secretary were nullified. However, the GOP does the same thing via “acting” secretaries, and all the Dems do is go to CNN and complain every other month.

    @WaterGirl:

Yeah, right. Each season—four or six episodes, can’t remember which—is one case, and you don’t have to have seen the first two seasons to pick up on this one. Basically, it’s the cold-case squad that gets called in when some old body or skeleton is found.

The characters have some personal side details that get developed, but nothing major. The plots are pretty good, the ensemble acting is good, and Nicola Walker (River, Last Tango in Halifax) is great.

@Steeplejack:I have Season 1, episodes 2 and 3 on Tivo, but I am missing episode one so I have never watched it yet. I also have all 3 episodes of Season 2. It looks like season 3 will have 6 episodes.

So glad to know it’s safe to watch it out of order and to know that I can watch my missing episode on Amazon Prime. Amazon Prime can FINALLY be watched through Apple TV, so it’s much less annoying than it used to be.

Just a technical note, but Attila the Hun was an unauthorized immigrant into the Roman Empire. He was following the footsteps of Alaric, King of the Goths, who defeated & killed the Roman equivalent of Trump in 378 C.E. at Adrianople.

With this news, the Trump Cabinet is down to 2 women (out of 15); if you count other Cabinet-level positions (and Linda McMahon’s pending resignation), it’s 3 out of 22. I don’t think Obama ever was below 4 Cabinet members or 7 Cabinet-level positions.

Heard a news report that ‘WH sources say’ Trump wants to toughen up on his immigration stance to get ready for 2020 election campaign. IIRC, Trumpsters and GOP tried immigration and xenophobic scare and ‘get tough’ campaigns to win in 2018, and that approach bombed big time. So, they want to do it again? I guess so. Maybe that is a good sign for the 2020 election, if not for the US policy over next 31 months.

Actually, to be precise, you can go to timeanddate.com and see that the next inauguration when we hope Trump goes away is 15673 hours from right now.

Will have to do some research on that tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.

@Amir Khalid: He is surrounded by people who don’t care about the law. He has fired the ones who tell him no. Some don’t care about the law, some don’t know and those that do know and care (maybe only they don’t want to go to jail) are trying not to tell him know, even if they are smart enough to not actually follow his orders. He will never understand he doesn’t own the US the way he owned Trump company and he didn’t obey the law then.
