Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I was promised a recession.

Let’s finish the job.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Come on, man.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Consistently wrong since 2002

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

People are complicated. Love is not.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Gun Fondlers Open Thread: The Return of Ollie North

— Zeddediah Springfield (@Zeddary) April 16, 2019

Politics in the ’80s sucked the first time — which idiots decided we needed a rerun? Oh, right: Republicans, fondly recalling their ‘Glory Days’!

Per the NYTimes:

… The National Rifle Association sued one of its largest and most enduring contractors late last week and raised concerns about the contractor’s relationship to the association’s own president, Oliver North, in a stunning breach within the normally buttoned-up organization.

The suit was filed late Friday by the N.R.A. in Virginia, where it is based, against Ackerman McQueen, the Oklahoma ad firm that operates NRATV, the group’s incendiary online media arm. The suit asserts that Ackerman has concealed details from the N.R.A. about how the company is spending the roughly $40 million that it and its affiliates receive annually from the association.

The suit creates uncertainty about Mr. North’s future at the organization. And it leaves the future of NRATV in doubt, given the new acrimony in the Ackerman relationship.

Since Ackerman created NRATV in 2016, it has often been “perceived by the public as the voice of the N.R.A.,” according to the rifle association’s complaint. It has also taken on an apocalyptic tone, warning of race wars, calling for a march on the Federal Bureau of Investigation and portraying the talking trains in the children’s show “Thomas & Friends” in Ku Klux Klan hoods.

The New York Times reported this year that two prominent N.R.A. board members were among those voicing alarm inside the association that NRATV was often straying beyond gun rights. The Times article also revealed that Ackerman had a previously undisclosed financial relationship with Mr. North…

The complaint details a peculiar standoff with Ackerman over Mr. North, who took over as president last year. The N.R.A. claims it was aware that Mr. North had a contract to act as the host of a web series for Ackerman, but that Ackerman has refused to provide a copy of the contract for nearly six months. Additionally, Mr. North’s counsel told the N.R.A. that “he could only disclose a copy of the contract” if Ackerman said he could, the suit says…

Is there a nepotism issue? Hey, as the Repub Majority Leader once said, “Remember, we’re all family here!”…

… The lawsuit is further complicated by family ties. The N.R.A.’s outside lawyer, William A. Brewer III, is the son-in-law of Angus McQueen, a co-chief executive of Ackerman, and the brother-in-law of Revan McQueen, its chief executive. Ackerman called the relationships an “irreconcilable conflict of interest” and said some kind of family dispute “pervades the Brewer firm’s dealings with Ackerman McQueen.”…

As ever, when dealing with Republicans, the wise choice: Root for Injuries.

    It was Speaker Ryan:

“There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” McCarthy (R-Calif.) said, according to a recording of the June 15, 2016, exchange, which was listened to and verified by The Washington Post. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is a Californian Republican known in Congress as a fervent defender of Putin and Russia.

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) immediately interjected, stopping the conversation from further exploring McCarthy’s assertion, and swore the Republicans present to secrecy.

Before the conversation, McCarthy and Ryan had emerged from separate talks at the Capitol with Ukrainian Prime Minister Vladimir Groysman, who had described a Kremlin tactic of financing populist politicians to undercut Eastern European democratic institutions.

News had just broken the day before in The Washington Post that Russian government hackers had penetrated the computer network of the Democratic National Committee, prompting McCarthy to shift the conversation from Russian meddling in Europe to events closer to home.

Some of the lawmakers laughed at McCarthy’s comment. Then McCarthy quickly added: “Swear to God.”

Ryan instructed his Republican lieutenants to keep the conversation private, saying: “No leaks. . . . This is how we know we’re a real family here.”

WTF? From the Guardian. Trump insistent on punishing immigrants.

The Trump administration has opened the door to a seismic overhaul of immigration and asylum procedure that could lead to the indefinite detention of thousands of asylum seekers who cross the border illegally.

The US attorney general, William Barr, on Tuesday issued guidance overruling a precedent set by George W Bush’s justice department in 2005, which enshrined asylum seekers’ right to bond, irrespective of how they entered the country.

Barr stated in his updated guidance that the 2005 decision was “wrongly decided” and he would move to block immigration judges from offering people who have crossed the border illegally and have established a reasonable claim of torture or persecution the chance of release as their cases are decided in immigration court.

Oliver North and Elliott Abrams, two vile malefactors of death and misery in the service of profit or benefit contrary to American ideals, policies, the law and common human decency. Their decades of shit-baggery, their current prominence in the party and adminstration is an affront to all that is good and decent.
That they each continue to reveal their natures, lack of character, willingness to foment unrest, to cheer on and destabilize folks here and abroad, and the 47% of our friends, families and neighbors hold them in high esteem because they parade accross their TV’s and are held out as experts, as elder statesmen, as the proud and few who are constantly vigilant against the imagined threats and refutation of actual serious dangers. To forever enshrine the gun as the answer to every possible situation of discomfort, to demand the sacrifice of children in increasing numbers as the cost that must be borne to be free to parade around with your gun hanging out like a common penis.
And now, its come to this, a convicted felon is once again engaging in the exact same conduct -skimming some off the top, and now there’s another brief imbroglio that will have little to no impact on his ability to traipse the green rooms and think tank luncheons of every rich, twisted, corrupt walking private equity funder.
North and Abrams make me think bad thoughts.

It’s really interesting — you can click on a candidate and see not just amount raised but also how much of their first quarter fundraising was from big donors vs. small donors, how fast they are going through their money, etc.

Some of what I saw surprised me!

Democrats collectively raised 119.5 million; Trump raised $30 million. But 73% of Trumps money was transferred from elsewhere. And nearly 10% of the Dem money was “self-funded”. I imagine we’re looking at Mr. Starbucks.

If people didn’t want to believe it, the media wouldn’t report it that way.

I would suggest a corollary: If people vetted information like that before they passed it around, the disinformation campaigns wouldn’t be nearly so successful.

Every time I see a headline that says that Pelosi dissed AOC, once I read what Pelosi said, it’s clear that the media is salivating to write that Democrats are in disarray and are working overtime to figure out to manufacture the story they want to write.

Finally watched that interview, and sheesh, you’re absolutely right. She said “like 5 people”, and it looked like she could have named names, probably had their faces in a mental tally. This is a woman who can famously count votes precisely. Also it was about self-described socialists, per a previous bit in the interview.
Pelosi has famously said[1] that the US is a capitalist country politically, but this is a true statement at the current time.

She could have more explicitly made that point, but it’s really the kind of comment that you have to choose to take offense to. And the media are beside themselves to talk about divided Dems in a way they weren’t about Republicans when there actually was a vast wing of the caucus making it impossible to govern. Republicans were so divided that the country nearly defaulted several times, major Republican initiatives failed to pass, and they hounded their own Speaker to quit.

They simply can’t stand how the she-demon Pelosi is the only actual adult leader the capital and the sober party is the hippie Democrats. It’s eating them alive.

@lamh36: The 2nd story of the condemnation of Sodom is in Ezekiel I think. There it’s laid out in detail that God condemns Sodom for not welcoming the foreigner and harming the poor.

For some reason that version of the story is never mentioned.

Also in the widely told story the ending is not mentioned. The householder tells the men calling for the Angels that he will send out his virgin daughters instead. So gang rape of virgins is ok!
