Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

We still have time to mess this up!

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Today, pictures from valued commenter Luthe.

Since everyone in the world has pictures of the stained glass at Notre Dame (which thankfully survived), I thought the jackeltariat might appreciate some pictures of the artwork and statuary in the cathedral (status unknown).

Notre Dame de Paris

A scale model of the Cathedral. I’m sure many similar models will be consulted in the weeks and months ahead.

Notre Dame de Paris

These were in a side chapel so they may have been spared the flames; whether they were smoke or water damaged is another story.

Notre Dame de Paris

Many of the columns adjoining the side chapels are painted; this is an example of one of them.

The walls of the side chapels are also richly painted and dedicated to various saints, kings, and miraculous happenings.

A rear view of the main altar which (miraculously!) survived.

Notre Dame de Paris

As you can see, the side chapels have a lot going on. There are statues, there are individual paintings, and there are paintings on the walls and ceilings.

This lovely lady is wood, so I don’t know how she fared.

I know it seems silly, but you have to appreciate that even the floor vents are beautiful.

Notre Dame de Paris

Yes, this is from the exterior, but it has my favorite statue in it: St. Denis holding his head. St. Denis is one of the two patron saints of Paris and the legend goes that after he was beheaded for his faith he picked up his head and carried it to the location of what is now the Basilica de St. Denis and then gave a sermon before finally dying. Truly, the first talking head!

Thank you so much Luthe, do send us more when you can.

Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

Not silly at all. I find those kind of architectural details fascinating.

Luthe, Thank you for the pictures and the details are beautiful. It’s going to take more than five years to recreate that.

I love the little details in the side chapels! Hoping that the smoke and water damage isn’t too severe and that they’re able to be restored! Thank you Luthe, for showing us more of Notre Dame than the usual big scene pictures. Gives even more depth to the loss.

To be there seems almost overwhelming. There’s so much to look at!

@debbie: I was so overwhelmed while there, I took only a very few photos. I was much too busy trying to absorb it all. And did a poor job of that, as well.
