Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

People are weird.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Bogus polls are all they’ve got left. Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls a year from now.

The choice is between normal and crazy.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Bark louder, little dog.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Republicans in disarray!

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

The willow is too close to the house.

Republicans don’t trust women.

This really is a full service blog.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

    Reposting from down below
    So Haaretz interviewed Dean Baquet:

    With the surge in digital subscribers in 2018, revenues from advertising in the internet editions rose at a record rate of 23 percent in the last quarter of the year. The improvement in the paper’s balance sheet, contrary to the dominant trend in the traditional print press, allowed the Times last year to hire the particularly large number of 120 new newsroom staff, thereby increasing the number of journalists at the paper to no fewer than 1,600, the highest number since its founding, in 1851.

    “Short-term, he did help us,” Baquet says about Trump’s effect on the paper. “Long-term I fear he hurt us.” He attributes the sharp rise in readership since 2016 to the fact that people “are just more interested in politics and care more about the news, either because they love him or they don’t like him. And lots of people started to subscribe, partly to support us, because he was attacking independent journalists, and partly because they wanted us to get him.”

    If things are so good, why he is worried? “If the president keeps saying we are fake news, we are enemies of the people, I fear that’s going to hurt us in the long run among other readers.” Most of the paper’s readers are liberals, notes Baquet, “but I don’t want to be read by just one segment of the population. If we’re not read widely, I think that that’s not a healthy place for a newspaper to be. I want people to read us, otherwise you can’t have impact.”

    He was also asked: Do you see anything positive in Trump’s term in office so far?

    “I think he has forced America to pay attention to people who felt disenfranchised. There are people in the center of the country who feel like they have been left behind, who feel like the people in positions of power don’t want to listen to them. Some of those people voted for Bernie Sanders, too. Many people in America thought that after the last financial crisis, everything was fine, but now people are telling us, ‘Stop, no, that’s not the case, pay attention to us.’ And I think Donald Trump has helped send the signal that we need to pay attention to those people. And I think that has been important.”

    If you want to know why the NYT ran so many Cleatus Safari pieces and has covered Trump the way it has, this is it.

    @Baud:

    I can almost see his reasoning. Ideally, as a newspaper, you would want your circulation to be very high and also be widespread across much of society. This would not only be good for the paper’s bottom line, but it’s importance and influence. The trouble is, you can’t (shouldn’t) sacrifice objective reporting to get that, which Baquet has done.

    @Steve in the ATL:

    I know. I’m not sure how you can reach such assholes like Baquet when he spouts stupid reasoning like this in the face of criticism:

    In retrospect, Baquet, despite all the criticism he’s faced lately, far from being contrite about that headline, takes credit for it. “I made the decision, so I was very involved in that,” he says, terming it “a big moment in the history of The New York Times.”

    “All politicians lie to some degree,” he continues, “but there are degrees of lying. Some politicians say, ‘My program will feed a million people,’ and they know it’s only going to feed half a million. If you called all of those things lies, think what your newspaper would look like. Trump is in a different class: His exaggerations and his falsehoods are strong. But a lie assumes that the person actually consciously knows they are lying. And there was no question in this case. This wasn’t an offhand remark, this was a sustained powerful public statement by a man who was now vying to be the president of the United States.

    He hasn’t learned a damn thing in 3 years. It’s particularly sad since the very kind of people his paper is enabling would throw him in the nearest gas chamber without a second thought

    @??? Goku (aka Amerikan Baka) ??: So as long as the FTFNYT decides Trump doesn’t know it is lie they will not call him out on it. And I guess Trump didn’t know the Trump Foundation was a slush fund, so the FTFNYT didn’t bother looking into it. And even when Trump’s own people all but admitted it was and agreed to shut it down, it still wasn’t really a big deal to the FTFNYT. But during the campaign it was very newsworthy to imply there was something fishy going on with the Clinton charity even though there was no evidence at all. Fuck this guy and the horse he rode in on.

    Yes, please.

    Letitia James, New York’s attorney general, opened an investigation into the National Rifle Association’s nonprofit status Saturday, just hours after the group’s president announced he would not seek a second term.

    The NRA, and several businesses connected to it, received subpoenas Saturday, said Kelly Donnelly, a spokeswoman for James.

    A lawyer for the NRA said the organization will “fully cooperate” with the investigation, and added, “The NRA is prepared for this, and has full confidence in its accounting practices and commitment to good governance.”

    The organization is chartered as a tax-exempt group in New York state and James, a Democrat, made targeting the NRA a platform of her campaign during the 2018 election cycle.

    In a 2018 interview with Ebony, James said the NRA styles itself “as a charitable organization,” but argued it is actually “a terrorist organization.”

    @Raoul: That’s a great find. Josh Marshall is usually measured and analytical, that is, when he’s not trying to be funny. But he is a very committed and proud Jew and I don’t blame him one bit for his disgust that Meghan McCain is pretending to be an expert on antisemitism. What is noteworthy is that even in his anger, he is precise and accurate.

    As for the NYT, having grown up surrounded by loyal readers, I don’t doubt that many of them are indeed fascinated by what they consider the aboriginals of the land beyond the Hudson. There is probably a certain amount of that urge that makes one slow down and gape at a car accident — the accident here being, “How the hell did we end up with Trump?” — operating here.

    Still, there is no answering an unanswerable question — New Yorkers will never be able to fathom Red Staters. Enough already, reassign those reporters!

    @Ruckus:

    You get to show up and answer questions. You can take the fifth if it incriminates you. Otherwise you show up, you answer the fucking questions.

    What if he doesn’t? What’s the next move? I hope someone thought about it because he is going to refuse to show up just because he and his boss are confident that they will get away with it.

    He’s hinging his argument on “completely”,

    They (not sure/don’t care about gender) should have bolded or used italics, though on some platforms _x_ does that.
    It’s a open ended point. There were many factors in that (2016) election. My list includes: the Democrats were utterly outplayed by actors trying to get Republicans elected, both domestic and external, on manipulation of media cycles and in propaganda/political marketing(/call it whatever) in general. The materials released by wikileaks had influence and they were well-played by actors trying to get Republicans elected. There might have been manipulation of the voting apparatuses in a few states though this remains to be proven. Comey released the Comey memo (was he forced, did he sell his soul, or what?). It was a perfect storm (not sure it was even intended by some of the actors) and it will not be easy for the Republicans and current allies to pull off again (in different form because learning), but they will try.

    It was a perfect storm, but all the Cletus Safari’s to find the economically anxious, found White Nationalist Mysoginous Nazi’s instead.

    Remember “he’s not hurting the right people” Drumph voter?

    @James E Powell:
    They may be confidant. But that would be misplaced till they actually get away with it. And that is actually not all that likely. They act like they do because they are assholes and morons. They think they own the world, that their shit doesn’t stink. But it does and they don’t. And they are fucking with serious people with the law on their side. Now I could be wrong. If I am then we are far more fucked than I think we are. And being that far fucked would be a very bad place to be. Because there really aren’t a lot of options left then and at the end of the day, we no longer live in a democracy, we would be living in a shithole. History would show that DT was the death of the democracy, but it would still be dead. But there are a lot of steps to go to get to that point, let’s not get ahead of ourselves, it doesn’t help anyone.

    @Ceci n est pas mon nym: Sorry I’m so late getting back to you on this (had to watch Game of Thrones)

    1) Yes, Stan Lee cameo, and it’s delightful. The crowd cheered.
    2) No post-credits scene (although there’s a sound cue at the very end, that will have an emotional effect. Or so I assume; we left, knowing there was no post-credits scene, and I read about the sound cue after. Not a big thing, so no need to stay if you have to pee (movie is 3 hours long). Oh! Speaking of- if you do need a bathroom break, the two spots where you won’t miss too, too much is when it says “San Francisco” on screen and when it says “New Jersey.” The SF one is only about 30 minutes in; the NJ one is about 2 hours in.

    Stayed to the very end, but missed the sound queue. Now, have to read up on it.

    But sweet mother of dragons, between Game of Thrones and Endgame, I am all wrung out. Some interesting thematic parallels between the movie and this latest episode of Thrones.
