Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Come on, man.

American History and Black History can not be separated.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

If you are in line to indict donald trump, stay in line.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

Never forget that he train is barreling down on Trump, even as he dances on the tracks.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Repost cause it’s just such a great video

Even if I didn’t love the John Wick movies…I love Keanu Reeves.

He just seems like such a genuine nice guy who happens to be a big star.

Notice how he remembered his stuntman’s name or his action coach…

Oh and his answer to Colbert’s last question, esp if you know his history!!!! OMG…I LOVE HIM

I almost lost my passport whenI first went to UK I had taken it out on the flight and when I thought I had put it in my bag, it actually fell in the seat! I had to rush back to the plane before allthe attendants departed because you aren’t allowed back on the plane once you disembark. Luckily it was still on the floor near my seat! Now I’m way paranoid about it all and I habitually check for it whenever I travel internationally!

I went out canvassing today for Beto in Maryland. Our primary is not till April 28, so this was more about building a list of supporters for the campaign in general than trying to win the state. My impression was that the primary will either be over by super Tuesday, or we’re in for some really interesting and unexpected competition for the nomination after the debates. The people I met could only identify four candidates by name: Biden, Warren, Harris, and Sanders. Beto of course came up because I was canvassing for him. But I expected to hear some mention of Buttigieg, Booker, Klobuchar, Gillibrand, Castro, or Inslee and this didn’t happen. The other thing that was clear was that the main criterion that people were using for picking candidates was whether they could beat Trump. They may be anxious about healthcare, climate change, and K-12 education but they realize that we’re on a precipice and that nothing good can happen if we don’t retake the White House. These were my impressions from the 40 people I spoke to — nothing scientific about the sample or method.

I don’t think I’ve ever said this about an actor, but Keanu Reeves is an admirable person.

I’ve heard a couple of industry journalists who have written about him refer to him as “Keanu, full of Grace,” on the basis of quiet good deeds he has done for people.

And of course there are the Inevitable people who caught him on a bad day who have negative stories to tell.

I’ve heard some interviews he’s given during film junkets where the interviewer noted how pleasant Keanu was before the recording began or afterwards.

He will be interviewed Friday by Simon Mayo for the BBC radio Kermode and Mayo podcast, talking about John Wick 3.

A Naturalist Goes Fishing: Casting in Fragile Waters from the Gulf of Mexico to New Zealand’s South Island Hardcover – October 27, 2015

In the tradition of fishing classics, A Naturalist Goes Fishing combines elements of the triumph between fisher and fish, humor and wit, and a passionate concern for the natural environment.

James McClintock takes us to some of the most breathtaking waters the world has to offer while capturing the drama and serendipity in the beloved sport of fishing. We follow him and his fishing buddies and professional guides, as he fishes off the marshy barrier islands of Louisiana, teeming with life but also ravaged by recent disasters like the Deepwater Horizon spill. We travel to the remote waters of New Zealand’s Stewart Island, where the commercial fishing industry is fast disappearing; fish for gigantic Antarctic toothfish through a drilled ice hole at McMurdo Station; and scout for spotted bass on Alabama’s Cahaba River, which has the highest diversity of fresh water fish in North America. As we take this global journey, we see how sea level rise, erosion, pollution, water acidification, and overfishing each cause damage.

    @Brachiator

Pretty darn good (and historically accurate*) maritime film which might still be on Netflix is Admiral, a Dutch movie centered around Michiel de Ruyter. trailer

    From a review:

Not being terribly knowledgeable about 17th century Dutch history, I can’t vouch for the accuracy or lack thereof of Roel Reine’s film about the country’s famed naval hero Michiel de Ruyter. But I can say that Admiral, one of the most expensive Dutch films of all time, is a rousing swashbuckling adventure whose elaborately staged sea battles provide ample compensation for the sometimes murky dramatic sections.

*Have a friend whose avocation is naval military history in scrupulous detail and he attests to that and was impressed (no pun intended) by the production.

When I owned my bicycle/triathlon shop I came to the conclusion that on average people matured both mentally and physically between 35 and 50. Women more in the first half of that and men more in the second. The reason I say this is that while the very best athletes in triathlon were between 30-35 – generally, there are always outliers, the average person peaked around 35. Then generally, the average stayed healthy and mentally well until about 65, getting a bit less athletic between 55 and 65. Once again, generally. Now I was picking from active people but it held both with customers and with a lot of average triathletes and marathoners and coaches that I knew. No science to this, just an observation. So the 50s could easily be a good decade for a lot of people.

@Gary from the Heart of Appalachia: Dunno about a URL trick, but temporarily turning off javascript and refreshing the page will usually nuke the “Turn off your adblocker” overlays. Then just turn javascript back on once you’ve read the article. It doesn’t always work, but it will a lot of the time. Some adblockers have filters that will block the anti-adblocker things, too.

I forgot who linked to the Neil/Shapiro interview earlier but it’s up on YouTube. Hoo Boy does Virgin Ben come off like a petulant child! He starts the interview trying to pick a fight and it just goes downhill from there. It’s 16 painful minutes but wow.

Just finished LePore’s American History book.

It was fantastic, at least up until the 1960s when it became more dutiful than insightful.

    Highly recommend.

@lamh36: It’s not really that they don’t use VFX, its that they don’t use cuts in the action sequences to mask the timing and flow of events. So, in the Jack Reacher scene at the shooting range, you see Tom Cruise pull the trigger on the gun, and then a cut to the bullet hitting the target (which probably didn’t even happen on the same day). In the John Wick films, you have a lot of over the shoulder shots where you can see Keanu Reeves aiming the gun at the target, pulling the trigger and the bad guy falls down, etc. It requires a lot of choreography and timing for that scene to come off, and the scenes tend to be relatively long between cuts, so the actors really need to know what they’re doing. Here’s a clip of Keanu training. He’s not relying of the director to make the action scenes come off.

@Plato: That’s sort of a variation on “if you have tell everyone you are the king, then you are not”. If this Republican really thought Turmp and company innocence they were be say “we don’t see any evidence of crime” not “let’s just change the subject”

    Enhanced Voting Techniques

    May 12, 2019 at 6:03 am

    @Villago Delenda Est:

Most of those who voted for Donald are immune to facts, logic, or reason.

Keep in mind Lizard BrainVille though they were voting for an American Putin who was going to scare off the femnazis who want to emasculate them and the scary black men with their big pensises, instead got a lazy old circus clown, whose dead broke, can’t even control his own administration and it continuously pantsed by That Horrible Woman Pelosi. Compare the the quite of the his supporters next to the unconditional love they had for GW Bush, they aren’t hapy.

Poco sez, “Mom, it’s cold and damp out there. I can just tell. The bed is snuggly and warm. I’ll just hold it awhile just for you in honor of Mother’s Day so don’t bother opening the door and telling me that I must go out. But in the meantime while you are up, can you bring me one of Aunt Red’s dog biscuits that she knows I love? You seem to forget how much I love them. It’s been almost 24 hours since you offered me one. On your special day, I’ll eat a couple in bed just in your honor. It would be especially nice, if we can start out with a couple of slices of that American Cheese. Aunt Red’s dog biscuits serve as a nice palete cleanser for me after the cheese and before you start your day. John Lennon, fearless rescue kitty, mentioned his litter box needed cleaning. I would do that as a Mother’s Day gift to you but the last time I did it as a surprise and kissed you, you screamed at me.”

@lamh36: On the lost passport issue: I have twice lost my drivers license in airports, which could have made it tough to get home, but each time I found it in my pants cuff. That was back in the when I wore suits. No hope of that in khakis without cuffs now that we are in the age of business casual.
