Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Republicans do not trust women.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

#CitizenScience collaboration ??? : I send home raw pictures of Jupiter, and talented people around the world turn them into everything from detailed scientific imagery to beautiful works of art. Full video: https://t.co/YIwpDufF6Q pic.twitter.com/ogkYKdw7HO

Jovian close encounter. A multitude of magnificent, swirling clouds in #Jupiter's dynamic North North Temperate Belt is captured in this color-enhanced image: https://t.co/0lAAb7fqEK pic.twitter.com/ifHqFhj9Zz

In the arms of the maelstrom: in this view from JunoCam, bright white clouds can be seen popping up in and around the arms of a rotating northern hemisphere storm. https://t.co/p5ms1ZhFa2 pic.twitter.com/p0s1KlCPvL

I have had a crappy, crappy few days, so I was glad when this came across my twitter feed. Sometimes I need to look outside myself to remember there are good things out there.

I hope your days are better.

I’m signing off for the night…but send me your pet and good news items when you can. And yes, I’ll try for a Pearl-Bixby-other critters update later in the week.

    Wow, gorgeous.

I actually just finished an unexpected research project: what would the view be if you were orbiting Saturn’s moon Enceladus? I ended up emailing with a scientist at JPL. Just now I was calculating how far from the moon you could orbit. It’s about 2300km, if you were curious.

@TaMara: I am so sorry about the crappy, crappy days you have endured recently. Sucks mightily. Your amazing contingent of BJ jackals awaits you, prepared to do battle on your behalf! You have but to say the word :-)

Those are gorgeous works of art. We’ve come a long way in technology since everyone crowded around the TV to see Alan Shepard standing on the moon.

@SiubhanDuinne: Thank you. You’d be amazed at how at the end of a crappy day, I look at Bixby and think, you know, it’s really not so crappy.

So sorry, T – hope your critters were able to make things better! (WTF am I saying, critters ALWAYS make everything better!)

Wonderful images – ever since Saturn/Cassini ended I’ve been turning my attention to the Juno pix…just amazing and really glad I lived long enough to see things like this!

My research project to build cartilage is finally coming full circle. The joint supplement I invented looks like it is going to go on the market. It’s been a long road.

Sorry to hear about your crappy days. My good news… a bear ripped the door off my chicken coop the other night but didn’t kill any of my girls. Youngest spawn got his grades back and is rocking a 3.8 GPA with one year to go on his undergrad! No humble about the bragging here… I’m so damned proud! He’s still planning on Medical School. Did I mention I’m so damned proud?

APOD is one of my antidotes when I’m feeling poisoned by the human aspects of the universe. The discussion section for each picture is always fascinating.

@Duane: Thanks, Duane. I have been using it for the past three years and I have high hopes that it will help a lot of people when those creaky joints manifest. It won’t replace chunks of cartilage that have been torn out, but it might truly delay the onset of osteoarthritis. Obviously we can’t claim that yet, but wouldn’t it be grand?
