Nice story from commentor Hervevillechaizelounge:
One of my friends went to a Nancy Pelosi shindig in Boston last night. When folks were waiting to shake the Speaker’s hand some dude kind of nudged my (female) friend out of the way.
Apparently Nancy Smash noticed because she maneuvered around Sir Shove-a-lot and grabbed my friend’s hand—my friend was gobsmacked!!
Given such history, I’m willing to watch what Speaker Pelosi does next, per the Washington Post:
… At least five members of Pelosi’s leadership team — four of whom also sit on the House Judiciary Committee, with jurisdiction over impeachment — pressed Pelosi (D-Calif.) in a closed-door leadership meeting to allow the panel to start an inquiry, which they argued would help investigators attain documents and testimony that Trump has blocked.
Several hours later, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler met with Pelosi as well and made the case to start the inquiry, he later told his panel member on a call.
Pelosi declined to endorse the idea both times, according to the officials either in or familiar with what happened in both meetings. She and House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) argued that such an inquiry would undercut other House investigations — or that the idea was not supported by other members in the caucus…
The meeting marks the first time a chairman and top rank-and-file lawmakers — including members of Pelosi’s leadership team — have lobbied her to change her long-held position on impeachment. Judiciary Committee members for days have discussed how to move the speaker toward their thinking, but few have been willing to break with her publicly.
However, a core group of Judiciary Democrats plans to begin calling Tuesday for an impeachment inquiry if former White House counsel Donald McGahn does not show for subpoenaed testimony at 10 a.m., according to multiple sources familiar with the plan. The White House on Monday moved to block McGahn from showing up, arguing that he is exempt from testimony…
Late Monday night, after huddling with Pelosi on the matter, Nadler appeared to side with the speaker — though he did not rule out impeachment. He would not speak about his meeting with Pelosi.
Nadler acknowledged, however, that opening an impeachment inquiry “might” empower his investigations, but he pointed to a federal judge’s ruling Monday to uphold a Democratic subpoena as proof that the courts could help the party. Pelosi had made the same point privately during the meetings…
My emphasis. Gonna be a(nother) busy morning on Capitol Hill…
In my public life, I have seen leaders who understood that their duty was not to do what was easy, but what was right – especially when my colleagues had the courage to support the Affordable Care Act. #ProfileInCourage

Spent yesterday going to bury an old friend; got home really late, exhausted, which I thought meant I’d be able to sleep in. Fail.
Her daughters, adults themselves, were pretty obviously grief-stricken. Tough scene. But for reasons known only to the family, even though Mom had been terminally ill for months, they had wanted to keep the situation under wraps. We, among the closest group of friends, were informed just a few days before the death. How it must have weighed on the kids to spend all that time in hospital and hospice and not be able to unburden some of that on their friends. Everybody makes their own decisions; if you’re “lucky” you can maybe make some of your own as life ends. My own father had several weeks to plan things, sign documents, etc. But the secrecy around terminal disease surprises me.

@Gin & Tonic: that’s a hard situation. Condolences on your loss.
A good friend of mine made the same one and it hurt a bit to feel shut out and unable to offer help or support. But it was what my friend needed to feel able to cope. She specifically didn’t want to have people “feeling bad” for her she said; but I think a bit of it was just trying to put off as long as possible the realization that time was running out because it was too devastating for her to contemplate.
We don’t handle the inevitable well in this society; hell we can barely cope with aging, much less death. In the end, we have to let each person deal in whatever way they can. Even if their choices frustrate us because we want to help, support, or just acknowledge their place in our lives and they don’t allow that to happen. Because in the end, it has to be what they want.

@OzarkHillbilly: I had another friend with pancreatic a few years ago. It was well-known among our circle, but he also had two of his closest buds as gatekeepers, telling everyone else, “sorry, he’s not accepting visitors.”
As I said, everyone makes their own choices. But if all your choices are bad, maybe think about how the ones you make affect those closest. This woman had two daughters, one of whom had two daughters, aged about 4 and 2. The grand-daughters knew what was happening (to the extent they can at that age) but the 4-year-old said she wasn’t sad that grandma had passed away, because she’d missed her mother the last few months and now will have more time with her. If you’re spending all your time visiting someone in hospital and can’t share that burden, or take a day off because “nobody can know,” then others suffer.

For the bread machine only. Corn rye:
Water — 1 1/2 cup
Oil — 2 tbsp.
Honey — 3 tbsp.
Salt — 1/2 tsp.
Caraway seeds — 2 tsp.
Cornmeal — 1/2 cup
Rye flour — 1 cup
Bread flour — 2 1/2 cups
Active dry yeast — 2 1/2 tsp
Vital wheat gluten — 2-4 Tbsp.
Add caraway seeds at the beep and check if more liquid is needed then. Set machine to white bread, medium crust. I sometimes substitute maybe an 1/8 cup of coffee for some of the water.
Have a couple of different recipes for New York type rye bread (no cornmeal).
While on the subject, kickass challah loaf (recipe for 2 lb. bread machine).
1 cup water
2 large eggs, well beaten
2 Tbsp. honey
1/4 cup vegetable oil
4 cups bread flour
2 Tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
2-1/2 tsp active dry yeast
Again, white bread and medium crust setting.

Pricey but highest recommendation for the Zojirushi BB-PAC20. May be a newer, upgraded model by now. Was fortunate enough to score one on Amazon (pre tariffs) on sale for under two hundred. Only drawback have encountered is that on the one I have the digital readout is dim black on a gray background so takes some squinting to check what the settings are.
Tip: always measure flour by using a serving spoon to put it into a measuring cup. Never scoop it with a cup size measure (packs it too tight).

I totally agree. I would be also very annoyed to be on prayer chains which somehow expand to bookface prayers from complete strangers. Even if it’s minor surgery, my attitude is that everybody doesn’t have to know everything. Right now I have a couple of relatives who have serious illnesses and they have only told a small group of closet family members. I understand that completely and respect their privacy.
Others are comforted by more family and friends in the loop and I respect that decision too. People have the right to do what is least stressful for themselves.

@schrodingers_cat: The trees with the flared trunks are cypress trees, and the straight one toward the right of the frame is a sweet gum (I think). The trees on the opposite shore are also mostly cypress, sweet gum, etc. We have deciduous trees in this part of Florida, so we get subtle seasonal changes. When we first moved up here last fall, we could see red, yellow and orange along the riverbank mixed in with the green. The colors aren’t as vivid as y’all have up north, but it is pretty! I look forward to seeing that again.
I also hate the giant cockroaches, especially the ones that fly! I freak out when I see one, which my husband teases me about since they don’t bite or anything. Nonetheless, they are horrifying! We spray to keep them out, but as far as I know, it’s impossible to completely eliminate roaches in this climate, no matter how clean the house or diligent the pest control application.

@OzarkHillbilly:
He really is good. Again- for a small city mayor he’s better at this than 3/4’s of the members of congress :)
That’s in line with public opinion too. There are really two separate questions in abortion “what do I think about it?” and “what should the government do about it?”
Those are not the same. People could say “I don’t like the woman making the choice, but if she doesn’t who does? A court? God, no, they’ll make a hash out of it!” Which is true, BTW, they will make a hash out of it- they’ll be bad at it.
You can hold these TWO opinions at the same time, and there’s no conflict at all. That should have been Bernie’s answer.
Miss Bianca
@rikyrah: Yep, for real…sigh…the only consolation is that, like most spring snowstorms around here, it should be melted off within 24 hours or so…we are *supposed* to be having lovely weather for the weekend, I sure hope so!
Holding pattern on the doggos. So far as I know, Aleta’s team is still pondering best options. Meanwhile, Wolf-Girl Roxy and Bat-Boy Watson are snoozing away on the comfiest surfaces they can find. Even Roxy looked at the snow outside and was all, “Nah, I’m good here.”

Turmeric and chickpea face pack is supposed to be good for your skin. I am not fond of the uncooked chickpea flour smell but its an age old beauty treatment, its also supposed to make you fairer (I doesn’t but does leave your skin glowing)
Kay
@OzarkHillbilly:
People had whatever opinions they had about Schiavo, but what they objected to was not “Jeb Bush having a different opinion about Schiavo”. It was the government DICTATING the result. And all the inevitable posturing and sanctimonious showboating that went with it and what they did to that poor woman and that family when they were all butting in so much.
Incidentally, I don’t know how anyone cna look at what conservatives did re: Schiavo and tell me with a straight face that they won’t be butting in to peoples’ pregnancies on their religious crusade with these abortion laws. Yes they will.
They ABSOLUTELY will be investigating miscarriages. They have a track record.
Kay
Mayor Pete is right. Once all the weeping and wailing is done, that IS the bottom line. Not “what” is decided re: a later term termination of a pregnancy but WHO decides. Conservatives want Ted Cruz to decide. I want the mother and doctor to decide. That is a no brainer to me, who will do a better job.

It’s also a lie that they won’t be butting into contraception. They have already done this. They spent a year screaming about contraceptive coverage in the health care law.
Back them off now or they’ll be monitoring every pregnancy. They have a track record.

@Betty Cracker: GoT related. When I cleaned out my parents house last year I found a ceramic dragon I had made around 1965. It was basiclally an anole with wings. I had forgotten I had had an obsession with dragons. I think it was supposed to be Smaug. What kind of kid would side with the dragon against a (thieving) hobbit.?

Closer to 6 inches here in Colorado Springs, also heavy stuff. Could hear tree limbs cracking and breaking all over the neighborhood. A freaking pine tree across the way has a 90 degree bend on it. Crazy.
schrodingers_cat
@blackcatsrule: I will ask my mother. I have never tried it myself, TBH. My favorite was sandalwood paste, its soothing and smells great!
ETA: No the proportions won’t be half and half that is way too much turmeric. Its a strong spice it would be probably a tea spoon or half a teaspoon to a cup. Water should suffice but some oil wouldn’t hurt.
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 cup water
1 tsp oil
Mix well
Apply to face and arms
Wait till it dries
And then wash it off
Good idea to do this before a shower.
