Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Not all heroes wear capes.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Republicans in disarray!

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

I just stopped in to see if anyone had posted an open thread. Glad to see Cole is on top of it. Back to writing. The muses have finally unlocked the safe, so I’m taking advantage before they lock up all the ideas again. Nice night to write, gentle rain falling, cats snoring next to me.

I bought a 2019 Honda Insight EX today. The 2011 Fit has 209000 miles on it and needs new rear brakes. The dealer wouldn’t touch it for a trade-in, but the salesman wants to buy it for his nephew’s first car. With the brakes fixed, it should go another couple of years.
I like the Insight; it’s a standard hybrid because I don’t have any place at home to plug in a plugin.

Suggestions on what to do Monday in LA? I have 5 hours to kill from arrival to mixer, then 2 hours before I leave at 1 am.

I’ve been listening to Joni Mitchell’s Hejira for the first time in a long time.

Sort of hypnotic: “Song for Sharon.”

Two songs that Echo in the Canyon made me think of (but aren’t in the movie):

    The Byrds, “Everybody’s Been Burned.”

    Buffalo Springfield, “Pretty Girl Why.”

    Sorry I dozed off.

    S’okay.

Has anyone else noticed YouTube getting obnoxiously in their faces with adverts in the past day or so, or did I mess with one setting too many?

@Amir Khalid: No, haven’t. I have an adblocker with teeth, but I didn’t think it stretched to YouTube. Otoh, I don’t look at a lot of the currently hottest stuff.

I just went to YouTube, clicked on the Jon Hamm/David Tennant interview that popped up. From May 28th, “only” 850+K hits. No ads. Checked out Maru NEW! posted June 7th – love that boy. No ads. Colbert dissing Trump last night, no ads.

Maybe you’re getting screwed by something more local? What you’re describing would drive up me the wall in a very few minutes. Hope you can find a way around it at least.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: , I want those star trails onna giant blanket on my bed. Or the slightly dialed-back version that pops up of a second before the full load of the current picture. Either way, it’s veryvery cool, and I’d want some of the counter-curve earth on the cloth too. (And no, that’s not meant to diss you as a serious photographer, it’s an added compliment.)

@SectionH: Uh, uh…I think I can get it put on a mug. That star trail is sort of a byproduct of the timelapse that I was shooting. I shot a star trail facing north, the timelapse was of the Milky Way rising in the east. Well since I had 360 shots of stars over time, why not try star trails too. I still am not completely happy with the foreground, there’s just too much light on the road.

We have a VW Tiguan, 2013, with 40K on it. I also have a MB C300, 2011, with only 30K on it. No longer commuting to work every day. With only 1 or 2 or sometimes 3 trips to town now, instead of 5 every week, plus weekend entertainment trips, we booked lots of miles pre-retirement. LOTS of miles! No more, thank dog.

There’s also my dad’s roadster, 1990 with 30K on it. Being a topless car, practically, it only comes out for pretty day drives a few times in the summer.
