Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

This fight is for everything.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Portland, OR Friday 14 June 2019 Meet Up Details

Mnemosyne Muse emailed asking if I’d do an update with the details for tomorrow night’s meet up in Portland, OR. So here are the details she provided:

It looks like we’ll be meeting at 7 pm on Friday 6/14 at the Rookery Bar above Raven & Rose at 1331 S.W. Broadway. If someone local could volunteer to bring some green balloons, that’s always helpful in allowing the group to locate each other. I’ll be wearing my black “Hamilton” Los Angeles t-shirt since that usually makes me easy to identify.

Here’s a link to the Rookery Bar and the Raven & Rose Restaurant for those looking for further details.

Here’s what the t-shirt looks like:

As a teaser, for those of you in St. Louis, new home of Lord Stanley’s Cup – Mazel Tov! by the way – please save the date of 27 June 2019 as commenter OpieJeanie will be in town and wants to do a meet up there. I’ll do a dedicated post for this over the weekend, but here’s what she’s sent me. She’ll also be in KC on 23 June 2019, in case anyone there would also like a meet up. Here’s what she’s sent me so far

We are traveling on Sunday the 23rd to Kansas City and will be there until the next morning, when we head down to the Ozarks to visit cousins. We will be in St Louis on the 27th and wonder if jackals in either city would like to meet with us for supper.

So if you’re in KC and are interested in a meet up on the 23rd, or St. Louis and interested in one on the 27th, save the dates and look for a dedicated post on this over the weekend.

She should drop in on Ozark Hillbilly unannounced. Blech.

I am literally on the train to Portland right now. I just ordered a gin & ginger ale to go with my dinner. Food is included with a sleeper ticket, booze is not, but it’s not that expensive.

May be around on the 27th. What area of St. Louis were you thinking about?

Darn it! I am heading out of town mid-afternoon tomorrow, or else would join folks at the Rookery.

@Adam L Silverman: I’m supposed to get a royalty check whenever someone refers to dossier updating on B-J. Is someone embezzling my money? It’s Bella Q, isn’t it?

@Adam L Silverman: Adam, I’ve been waiting all day for you to do a post so that I could belatedly Thank You for your post a couple of days ago on Jon Stewart’s all too public shaming/grandstanding in that House Finance subcommittee meeting. Yours was the only explanation that I’ve read online or seen on cable news that critiqued the overly dramatic performance by Stewart and his wholesale condemnation of those subcommittee members. Thank you for coming to their defense. Too bad your take didn’t get half the coverage that Stewart’s performance did. It’s far too easy to believe the worst of our elected representatives and sometimes the facts are not black and white, they are often gray and “extenuating”.

@Quinerly: I don’t know St Louis but we’re staying at the Hilton at the ballpark (that’s what it’s called), near the Cardinals’ stadium, not far from the arch. We are interested in suggestions for the meet-up.

@opiejeanne: If you’ll be in his area, Ozark recommended the “Du Kum Inn Restaurant” in/near Sullivan. I’m not a local, so no real ideas on a location for a meet-up.

    June 13, 2019 at 11:10 pm

@OldDave: Thanks. I’ll put that on the list of what we might do on this trip.

I might go to the Bushwhacker Museum, but mainly to see the jail. It’s in Nevada (NuhVAYduh) Missouri, a place that used to called Hog-Eye. If there are re-enactors present I may just lose my shit and talk to them about shooting my great grandpa’s dog when he was a little kid, right after the Civil War. Oh, and about them burning down his family’s house.

D’oh! Well, no Giant Evil Corporation Pride hat for you. I keep it for myself now.

    @mrmoshpotato:

Yes, I got the smallest sleeper — the roomette. It’s about a 36-hour trip, so one night of sleeping.

I’ve been nodding off all day, so I’m hoping I’m one of the people who can sleep on trains.

@mrmoshpotato: I’ve done plenty of overnight train trips in Eastern Europe. Yeah, the train rocks you to sleep, but then it wakes you up when they do weird switching maneuvers in the middle of the night.

But I’ve also done 3-rd class, and that’s not something you really want to repeat.

@mrmoshpotato: 3-rd class is, I guess you could call it, open-plan bunks. Look up the word platskart or platskartny.

    First class is a two-person compartment, 2-nd is a 4-person compartment.

Amtrak has sleepers (first class), business class, and coach. You only get to lay down flat if you pay for a sleeper.

I know people who have done overnight trips in Amtrak coach, but they don’t recommend it.

I had a friend with ear problems who hated to fly, so one time in the 90s we took Amtrak from Boston to Chicago. Cost more than flying, took longer, and was not at all comfortable.

I live in Portland but am a native of St. Louis. Went to lots of Blues games as a yoot and have some very happy family members.

Last year my work team went to lunch at Raven & Rose, which is a few blocks from our office. The restaurant was so loud we couldn’t hear each other speak. But the bar upstairs will probably be okay. I will be wearing a fleece vest bearing the logo of a federal agency.

Has anyone invited Bob From Moskva?
