Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

šŸŽ¶ Those boots were made for mockin’ šŸŽµ

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

No one could have predicted…

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

He really is that stupid.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

People are complicated. Love is not.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Celebrate the fucking wins.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

This guy went out for a run, cut through the park and picked up a trio of running mates:

Merriam-Webster does not mess around:

'Whales': ? various large, aquatic, marine mammals

'Wails': ? expresses sorrow audibly

'Wales': ??????? a country in Great Britain https://t.co/cDFzDPvxjR

Oh, no!

So the gutter guy cleaned the gutters yesterday and I warned him to watch out for the ducks wandering the backyard. I looked out later and he was in the grass, trying to get them to come over to him. I brought him a bag of greens and let him feed them. It is one of the wonders of ducks…everyone wants to meet them.

I sent him home with a couple of duck eggs. LOL

Much needed respite open thread…what a news day.

Wow, good timing for once. I booked not just my first voice gig, but also my second, today. Like, within 15 minutes of each other. Already delivered on the first, the second just needs editing and noise reduction. If I can book 1 more, I will have paid my membership fees and will have turned a bit of a profit. I feel much less fail. But a bit sore of throat.

    Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY WG!

Hey, we got everything ready to go for the Portland meet up tomorrow? 7pm, and we have the venue all set? Just wondering since I have not heard anything solid regarding the venue.

  18. 18.

    joel hanes

    June 13, 2019 at 7:37 pm

    @James E Powell:

Hoe with a narrow triangle-shaped blade, sharpened as needed.
Doesn’t work as well as actual weeding, but is easier on the back.

Or you could tape down black plastic strips over the cracks for a couple weeks, until the weeds die for lack of sun — but they’ll eventually reseed and come back.

Deer running buddies are really funny!

    Happy, happy! birthday WaterGirl!!

We left the house around 12:30, wife had her annual appointment for her orthodontist work, at the mouth of the driveway where we hit the county (dirt) road, there was a young turkey in the weeds. You could just see his head above the not quite knee deep weeds.

When they’re that age, they’re curious and not too timid.

Had lunch, hit the dental office, her orthodontist had retired!!! The practice carries on, her annual maintenance and inspection is included, I guess forever. Then we got some fertilizer, some deer repellent, etc at the farm and garden center, hit Kroger’s and got home.

    Dinner is in the oven…

    Rule of nature: food runs.

So I assume those deer saw this guy, recognized him as a dangerous predator, then realized he was RUNNING. Ergo, there must be something EVEN SCARIER coming this way, so better follow that dude, he seems to know what he’s doing. Now they’re growing increasingly suspicious that they can’t see or hear Godzilla, or Frankenstein, or whatever’s scary enough to make a human run. Therefore, the only explanation: INVISIBLE GODZILLASTEIN.

This is, interestingly, the same way paranoid schizophrenia works.

    @rikyrah:

The ranch and farm are well known by the wildlife to be a safe space.

With the recent logging of a bunch of the neigboring forest, the wildlife count is way up.

Spring through fall it’s common to see does and fawns on the property, and the hand wave thing, ( opening and closing one hand like a clamshell) seems to be taken as a signal that we arn’t a threat.

Last winter I had to hunt down a deer. A late spring fawn had taken that year to following a doe and her older fawn around, and while she fed her while she was still nursing her fawn, she stopped tolerating the fawn once the milk dried up, and would try to run her off.

The fawn survived, following the mom and daughter around through the summer, keeping 40 to 80 yards away, but when winter came, she didn’t follow the mom down into the valley.

During the early part of the winter, we saw her around, from time to time l, and saw her tracks in the snow, but when the first big storm was forcast, I knew I had to relocate her. Sucessfully got her down into the valley where she got to join a winter herd.
