On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.

From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.

Submit Your Photos

Good Morning All,

As we move closer to the new site launch, I wanted to remind you to submit things now via the form or to hold off until the new site is live.  The old email address is dead and until the new site is live, there’s no replacement.

I will push all submissions I get into drafts so that, when the new site launches, there’s a bunch of posts ready to go while the dust settles. I don’t expect the new site to launch immediately, but that time is fast approaching, and when it’s ready, it will birth. Now is the time to “stack up” some submissions to ease any content woes when the time comes.

Have a wonderful day, and enjoy the pictures!

Today, pictures from valued commenter Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes.

So this summer’s adventure is Greece – specifically, an overnight in Athens followed by some amazing days in Santorini , some more days in Naxos with wife and youngest daughter, and then Athens for some more days.

Youngest daughter is an archaeologist doing a cross-masters in gender studies. She is a fluent Greek speaker and does ancient as well – and was part of the team that found the oldest piece of Limear B discovered to date at the dog at Pyles. She may be the best possible guide I could imagine.

South of Athens

This was a place near the seaside outside Athens, and maybe 20 minutes from the airport. It cost 85 euros, and they did the transport.

Outside Athens

This restaurant was the shit. They picked us up – no charge. It was on the beach, with a beautiful breeze.

We had Mythos beer, a half liter of wine, Greek salad, saganaki (fried cheese), a freshly caught snapper, 200 ml ouzo and a cake ala mode for under $70.

Best part was that it didn’t get hopping till 10:30.

Caldera Romantica, Santorini

We decided to come in a couple of days early. We had a reservation at a luxury property, but needed a day early. This place was great and ran maybe 120 euros after drinks and 2 breakfasts.

Thank you so much Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes, do send us more when you can.

Travel safely everybody, and do share some stories in the comments, even if you’re joining the conversation late. Many folks confide that they go back and read old threads, one reason these are available on the Quick Links menu.

What a wonderful trip. I’d love a glass of ouzo on that terrace watching the sunset.

But no pics of the museum exhibits nor the digs in progress? Those were the best part of our trip to Spain and France to see prehistoric cave art, besides the cave art itself. Grad students giving us a tour of their research area, seeing the pits being dug in ancient caves, the tags on the walls and floors of the excavations.

I kid! Wonderful stuff, thanks for showing us some of your journey, great that you had such a well educated and experienced guide!!!

Wife and I are having trouble picking out somewhere to go.

The American Institute of Archaeology still takes folks into Iran to see the glory of ancient Persia. And into the ‘Stans to travel the Silk Road! So ancient, so interesting, so scary.

I’ve always wanted to see Greece. If I ever get over there, I’ll check first to see if your daughter is available! ;-) Thank you for the pictures!
