Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Open Thread: Jimmy Carter Has No Hecks Left to Give

by Anne Laurie|  June 29, 20196:15 pm| 244 Comments

This post is in: Election 2016, Open Threads, Proud to Be A Democrat, Republican Venality, Russiagate

NEW: Former president Jimmy Carter says a full investigation “would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016….He was put into office because the Russians interfered.” Does that mean he’s an illegitimate president? “Based on what I said, which I can’t retract.” pic.twitter.com/Y3UFUBIIDy

— Susan Page (@SusanPage) June 28, 2019

Former President Carter is a Baptist gentleman of a certain age, so language. But he does have a standing bias against parasitic worms…

Former Vice President Walter Mondale on President Trump: “He’s got something deep in him that is detestable.” Cites “his rhetoric, his harshness, his divisiveness,” then adds: “Doctors tell me they think they recognize symptoms of psychological problems.” At @CarterCenter panel

— Susan Page (@SusanPage) June 28, 2019

The current Oval Office Occupant, needless to say, treated these comments with his usual class and graciousness. Suck on it, Donnie, President Carter has a Nobel Peace Prize and *he* didn’t even have to go sucking up to the Swedes for it…

Most of us thank God, and God thanks Jimmy Carter.

— Jane Black (@AmethystMimosa) June 28, 2019

ETA:

Because it’s relevant here:

Jimmy Carter knows as much about election tampering, and election integrity, as anyone anywhere, through decades of monitoring more than 100 elections around the world. https://t.co/MxYjIWVy9m

This is not just amateur opining on his part. https://t.co/RFxzX5SyQx

Also, feral chickens are tormenting England. (h/t Dorothy Winsor)

Feral chickens roaming in Vallee des Vaux, Jersey

Jersey is being terrorised by hordes of feral chickens, which have been waking up locals, damaging gardens and even chasing joggers.

Residents have been making complaints about the birds, which have also become a traffic hazard. Two small culls have been carried out, but they continue to cause chaos, the Environment Minister has admitted.

It is believed the chickens were once pets which were abandoned, before rapidly breeding. They now roam the British island in 100-strong groups.

It looks like you’ve been abandoned today! Here’s a nice fresh open thread, which will now be followed by a flurry of open threads.

Have at it.

Megan Rapinoe scored twice to help the US advance to the semifinals in the World Cup on Friday. The offensive explosion comes just days after the president called her out for saying she wouldn't visit the White House if the US were to win the tournament.https://t.co/QI91U7aZTy

— Twitter Moments (@TwitterMoments) June 28, 2019

Yeah, I don’t pretend to understand soccer, but I’m enjoying this. Per the Washington Post:

… Rapinoe’s contributions punctuated a glorious night for women’s soccer, which is trying to make gains in a male-dominated sport. The United States and France were the top two favorites in the tournament, but the draw had placed them in the same bracket for a likely meeting in the quarterfinals.

“I hope this will help this women’s game go further and move into that next level,” said French Coach Corinne Diacre, whose third-ranked team has lost in the quarterfinals in each of the past five major world tournaments…

As kickoff neared, streets leading to the venue filled with fans singing and marching with flags and traditional scarves. Among the chants: “Equal pay!” — a reference to the U.S. players’ efforts for gender equality within the U.S. Soccer Federation…

“But for me, to be gay and fabulous during Pride month at the World Cup is nice.” – https://t.co/d2FpKs5wKh

Russian State TV Implies the President Is a Woman Subservient to Putin

Karavai (the Russian spelling and pronunciation) is a traditional bread made by women and presented on a towel at weddings and other festivities by women in Ukraine (koravai), Belarus, Poland (korawaj), Bulgaria (kravai), and Russia. Russian state TV decided to memorialize the President’s meeting with Putin at the G20 summit this way:

Women’s World Cup Open Thread: Captain Rapinoe, Huzzah!

The single most insipiring athlete in America this week: Megan Rapinoe

Rapinoe’s week:

1) Scored both goals against Spain
2) Told Trump to eff off
3) Scored both goals against France#TeamRapinoe pic.twitter.com/MnNTGtkm1j

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@HoarseWisperer) June 28, 2019

[SPOILERS]: Per the Washington Post:

This was a spectacle of women’s soccer, a capacity crowd in a famous stadium roaring as a reigning champion and an overdue contender collided in one of the most anticipated Women’s World Cup matches in history.

It lived up to its billing, and more. And when 90 exhausting minutes expired, the United States remained in contention for a fourth championship by edging France, 2-1, in a riveting quarterfinal before 45,595 at Parc des Princes.

Megan Rapinoe — the focal point of attention on the field by her exploits and off it for her outspoken opinions on politics, race and gender equality — scored twice for the second consecutive match as the Americans advanced to play England on Tuesday in Lyon…

Been a busy week for Ms. Rapinoe…

So as I’ve said previously about @mPinoe: Given this administration’s attitude toward the LGBTQ community (which they’ve enacted into policy), how do people not understand why she is upset?

Oh, @mPinoe. You are so bad-ass. Killing it on the field. Got folks mad cause you don’t wanna eat fast food at their house. Just keep shining. And I humbly invite you to dinner at my house anytime. Until then, I’ll watch this video of you being cool and epic. Onward! #AllEyesOnUS pic.twitter.com/VwMpzKmq7r
