Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

ProPublica published an exposé today on a secret Border Patrol Facebook group that allegedly comprises more than 9,000 agents and former agents. On the page, they giggle over anti-immigrant memes, including one using the image of the Salvadoran father and his two-year-old daughter who recently drowned in the Rio Grande.

I’m not even going to try to describe what ProPublica found, except to say there’s a shitload of cruelty, racism and sexism, and it’s no surprise people with such a mindset would be complicit in running camps where desperate men, women and children are hideously abused. If Facebook had been around in the 1930s/1940s, this is exactly the kind of shit Nazi concentration camp guards would post.

These agencies need to be burned to the ground, the earth where they stood salted over, and curses placed at the sites to keep the evil contained. Yes, we need to be able to control our borders, but surely non-psychopaths can be found to handle the fucking job.

I saw a photo of a guy at a protest recently holding a sign that said, “If you’ve ever wondered what you would have done in Nazi Germany, you’re doing it now.” Truth.

Can ICE/CBP be broken up without Congressional approval? I think they can. Weigh in, jackals. I really don’t know. Hope so.

Can employees of said agency be terminated with a “do not rehire” clause? Much less sure about that, but damn does that need to happen.

I’m not sure that 1) that is actually the case 2) they want non-psychopaths to work for them.

I’m pretty sure with the conditions as they are now, a non-psychopath would be able to work there for any length of time.

Somebody I know who worked in federal law enforcement told me once that there are so many people in law enforcement and incarceration now that there aren’t enough decent, qualified people to fill all the positions. Agencies like CBP and ICE are scraping the bottom of the barrel and these are the sociopaths they end up with.

I became conscious of the horrors of the holocaust when I was about 8 years old or so. I recall reading books about brave children who hid Jewish children and saved them from the camps. These were likely fiction, but they ingrained in me the idea that I had to be ready to take a stand against fascism if it came. So I don’t know how to take a stand, other than calling my reps, working for sane people to win elective office, and donating to organizations like the ACLU and Raices. But I do know that fascism is here.

@J.A.F. Rusty Shackleford: 40% is likely an exaggeration. I’d bet it’s more like the magic 27%, but that’s still at an unhealthy level. The CPB and ICE are self-selecting groups, so it’s not surprising that it’s particularly bad in those agencies. You’re also probably seeing the less sadistic ones finding any way they can to get out because the true sadists are probably out and proud with no pushback coming from above. Once a Dem takes office, may be pretty easy to identify them and fire them for cause, e.g., stuff like racist FB posts. I don’t think civil service protections will help them that much there.

Hundreds of active and retired police officers and law enforcement personnel are congregating in private Facebook groups where they engage in open racism, Islamophobia, and even lend support to violent, anti-government groups, according to an investigation from nonprofit news organization Reveal, which is run by the US Center for Investigative Reporting.

After Reveal notified law enforcement agencies, more than 50 departments have reportedly opened internal investigations. In some cases, departments say they’ll be evaluating officers’ online activity to see if it may have influenced past policing conduct. At least one officer has been fired for violating department policies as a result of participating in these groups, some of which bear names like “White Lives Matter” and “Death to Islam Undercover.”

Reveal reports that the groups contain a full range of right-wing political ideologies, from standard conservativism to far-right initiatives that center around outright racism and Islamophobia. Some go even further: some Facebook groups surveyed by Reveal were associated with anti-government and militia movements, like the Oath Keepers. Reveal says that 150 of the 400 or so officers that it identified as belonging to these groups were part of that more extreme end.

Well, well, well, Trump is getting back to serving his paymasters. Only it’s hard sometimes to tell which ones are in charge on a particular day.

President Trump has said U.S. companies that sell components to Chinese tech firm Huawei will be allowed to continue to do so.

In remarks at a press conference during the G20 summit in Japan, Trump said that he had told the Chinese leader Xi Jinping that Huawei would be allowed to buy U.S. goods once again. ‘We send and we sell to Huawei and tremendous amount of product that goes into the things that they make, and I said that we would keep selling that product’ the president said in answer to a question from the press.

Further remarks suggested the change had been in part due to pressure from U.S. suppliers who were banned from selling their goods to Huawei rather than any material difference in Trump’s position regarding national security concerns around the tech giant’s relationship with the Chinese government. Trump said that the U.S. companies were ‘not exactly happy that they couldn’t sell.’

The military and other agents of the state were valorized to the point that criticism was deemed unpatriotic. Rights were taken away from disfavored groups, gradually at first. @The Moar You Know: I don’t think so. Organizationally, this is an expected outcome, though. When you task an organization with doing one thing, they will develop a culture to rationalize doing that one thing as efficiently as possible. The Nazis gassed Jews because shooting them in the head wound up being too traumatizing for the German soldiers.

Ideally you want an organization to have goals that compete for that cultural space. They need positive goals and really well defined and very openly visible metrics for performance that the organization can channel its energy away from that job, and which will attract workers which are inclined toward the positive goal.

Essentially, we’ve implemented the Stanford Prison Experiment on a large scale by not learning the lessons of Abu Ghraib. Even the morally good ICE employees are going to yield to the influence of Trump and those below and around him calling for asylum seekers to be treated as poorly as possible as a deterrent. Look at the police officers behind Trump when he joked about not protecting suspects heads when putting them in police cars. They laughed. I’m sure at least some, if not most of them, would have objected to that suggestion in private, but when you start saying the quiet parts out loud and don’t get shouted down by the room, then they become accepted. That’s where we are as a nation – a step or two removed from smiling for the camera at the town lynching.

AOC also reports that women are being randomly woken up at night for no reason. So what we have now is a low rent Gitmo where torture is happening to women and kids. Make America Great Again. This is a blight, a deep shame and so far flung from the days of WW2 when we showed mercy to our enemies. Instead, we have filth treating humans worse than we treat our own criminals. Even in war, we wouldn’t treat the enemy this way.

Now, about that 30% tariff on solar PV panels.

That’s getting me irritated as well. Looks like I never posted this, apologies if it’s a dup:
A few-weeks-old reminder that the D.J. Trump adminstration is joined at the hip with the US Fossil fuel industries:
Two companies petitioned for Trump’s solar tariffs—now they’re both out of business (Michael J. Coren, June 18, 2019)

Two companies begged the US government to raise tariffs on imported solar panels in 2017. “Stop the bleeding,” implored panel maker Suniva in its petition (pdf) to the US International Trade Commission (ITC), joined by a second manufacturer, SolarWorld. Domestic solar panel manufacturers, they argued, needed import taxes to “grow and thrive.” These tariffs, Suniva insisted, would generate at least 114,800 new jobs in the US.

Today, both firms out of business. SolarWorld Americas, actually a US subsidiary of a German company, was bought out of bankruptcy by SunPower in October. Chinese-owned Suniva filed for bankruptcy this month. The company told a judge it plans to exit the solar panel business as soon as it offloads its inventory of panels stockpiled in warehouses.

The Chinese built an efficient solar panel industry. The US solar panel tarrifs are now purely to slow down solar adoption in the US.

After being rocked by Trump tariffs, the solar energy business is bouncing back (Apr 5 2019, Kate Rogers)
Trump’s solar tariffs haven’t stopped America’s switch to solar (Michael J. Coren, December 6, 2018)

One reason is that the Chinese slashed domestic subsidies for the solar industry. On May 31, China announced it was removing domestic feed-in tariffs (favorable long-term contracts for renewable energy producers) and moving utility-scale solar to competitive bidding. That elicited cut-throat competition between rival firms, flooding the global market, and sending photovoltaic module prices plunging to their lowest level ever.

We really can’t let them do this to another black Democrat. It started as fringe with Obama/Trump and then political media took it mainstream. The President and the First Lady are birthers and his horrible unemployable giant children are too.

@Bill Arnold: Grid PV prices in California are $0.045/kW, including battery storage. California may sequester 12TWh of excess production this year. There’s pretty much no recovery possible for fossil fuels at this point.

In April 2019, U.S. monthly electricity generation from renewable sources exceeded coal-fired generation for the first time based on data in EIA’s Electric Power Monthly. Renewable sources provided 23% of total electricity generation to coal’s 20%. This outcome reflects both seasonal factors as well as long-term increases in renewable generation and decreases in coal generation. EIA includes utility-scale hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass in its definition of renewable electricity generation.

Unlike the feds, CA doesn’t count large hydro in its renewable mix. Right now CA is producing just shy of 70% of power from renewables + solar, not including any imports from Oregon hydro. Even in the evenings natural gas usually doesn’t exceed renewables + hydro in CA. CA has the benefit of enough geothermal potential to power the entire state, plus enough offshore wind potential to power the entire state – which is only now being developed due to the difficulty of deep-water offshore wind farms.

Border Patrol Chief: Sexist Facebook posts ‘inappropriate’

CLINT, Texas (AP) — The head of the U.S. Border Patrol says sexist posts and comments mocking migrant deaths in a closed Facebook group for agents and employees are “completely inappropriate.”

Carla Provost said in a statement Monday that any employee who violated standards will be held accountable. ProPublica published a report on the group that comprises about 9,500 current and former employees. There are about 20,000 active Border Patrol agents.

Group members posted graphic doctored images of U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat. Other posts refer to Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Veronica Escobar, of Texas, in sexually explicit ways. One member encouraged agents to throw burritos at them during a facility tour Monday.

The assistant commissioner of the office of professional responsibility says the “disturbing social media activity” is being investigated.

Out of all the horrors of overcrowded SRO cells, 1 toilet for 200 people, etc, one thing that jumped out at me is that they are throwing away the bags people have brought with them. Purses, backpacks, suitcases, probably containing at least some of the things they currently lack – e. g. meds, clothes etc., just thrown away because, you know, they’re muddy (eeew) or wet (yuck) and they might have (icky) bugs.

They are throwing. Away. Migrants. Posessions. Just let that sink in. Most of them probably had at least one change of clothes. Maybe there were medications, personal papers, photographs? Too bad. They might be muddy, and we can’t have that in our camps.

These are concentration camps. The entire process is designed to strip all of the humanity from each and every person that comes into contact with CBP. Strip them of their families, strip them of their possessions, and most importantly strip them of their dignity. That seems to be the overall goal.

US immigration agencies have long been full of people like this. The restraints were loosened after 9/11, and taken away completely under Trump. The only hopeful thing here is the strength of the opposition.

@OzarkHillbilly: A friend said “Lonesome Dove” was one of the best books he ever read. I got about 200 pages in and was about to shelve it out of boredom. Next thing I know, the 800 remaining pages were read over the weekend.

Relating back to the post’s topic – Fuck Facebook.

It’s a disgrace that The Establishment is Rigging the Primaries in favor of (checks notes) three different candidates.

@MisterForkbeard: You’re doong what you can. Don’t sweat it. I’m reminded of the time we found out that the Chicago Vice Squad planned to arrest all of us at a Gay Liberation dance. There were “good gays” who criticized us for shocking people by holding hands and kissing in public. There were others who were supportive but too busy or had other reasons to stand back. When they heard about the Vice Squad they got on the phone and we had the entire Chicago ACLU in the outer lobby and others to follow us to Cook County Jail. This show of force impressed the head of the Vice Squad. There will be a time when you will be able to provide assistance or witness. You understand the need to rock the boat and to shock the status quo. That counts for a lot.

@cain: exactly. I’ve seen the piles of possessions at Dachau and at the Holocaust Museum. That they were taking what amounts to suitcases from people here, in the US. I can’t even.

    @Enhanced Voting Techniques:

Hitler got his ideas like ethnic cleansing from the 19th Century US Indian Policy. Just saying.

Yeah, and that had to stop.

And the Nazis had to stop.

    And this has to stop.

It’s got to stop sometime. Seems like this shit busts out now and then, and when it does, it has to stop. I don’t care who started it.

It’s inconceivable that anyone could laugh at the photo of the dead father and baby. I came across it by mistake and burst into tears. The sight of her little soaked diaper simply undid me. I cannot even express how deep my loathing for Trumpov goes.
