Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Come on, man.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

I’m just a talker, trying to find a channel!

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Republicans would impeach Biden if he bit into a whole Kit Kat rather than breaking the sections apart.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

No Justins, No Peace

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

Pelosi: “He either is stupid, or he thinks the rest of us are.” Why not both?

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Republicans in disarray!

Somebody needs to explain to DeSantis that nobody needs to do anything to make him look bad.

Her Majesty’s Ambassador assessed Trump:

CNN — Cables sent from the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to the United States to the British Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) describe President Donald Trump as “inept,” “insecure” and “incompetent,” a UK government official confirms to CNN.

The cables were leaked to and first published by the Daily Mail.

“The British public would expect our Ambassadors to provide Ministers with an honest, unvarnished assessment of the politics in their country. Their views are not necessarily the views of Ministers or indeed the government. But we pay them to be candid…” [British FCO statement]

No lies detected!

Once upon a time, this would have been a huge deal, such (well-deserved!) contempt from an important ally. It may not even be a front page story tomorrow.

In one of the most sensitive documents, Sir Kim writes: ‘We don’t really believe this Administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept.’

He also says that he doesn’t think Trump’s White House will ‘ever look competent’.

I saw that story earlier. Quite something. This may be old news but I gather from the Daily Beast that Jeffrey Epstein of multiple sexual assault fame was arrested on Saturday, though it’s just being reported this evening. The arrest is for sex trafficking. Hopefully there will be some justice for all the girls and young women he harmed. May Azar & Dershowitz go down with him.

I’m angry and deeply troubled by the fact of the leak itself. Maybe it wasn’t even a “leak” per se, but a calculated release done with at least tacit approval (but lots of deniability) from someone on high in FCO. If so, why? To embarrass Sir Kim Darroch? AFAIK, he has a long and distinguished diplomatic career. I suppose he’s made some enemies along the way, but that explanation just doesn’t ring true to me.

So, was it a genuine leaker from within FCO, or lax security even for their most sensitive communications systems? Either is an inexcusable breach, and if they identify the person/people responsible, I hope they’ll be brought up on every possible charge. I’m really outraged.

(Also, I wonder how long Sir Kim will last now in Trump’s Washington? I’m guessing he’ll be recalled and some sleazy Boris Johnson-approved toady appointed in his place.)

Will be interested in Adam’s take on the security implications of this episode.

@Karen: Brazilian jazz musician & vocalist, paired with Stan Getz on some of his classic bossa nova cuts from the early 1960s. Ex-wife Astrud sang as well, most notably the English-language vocals on “The Girl From Ipanema” (A garota de Ipanema). (FTR the reason the English lyrics on that cut are so utterly clumsy is that Tom Jobim wrote the song for a man & the effort to translate it [poorly] & simultaneously adapt it for a woman folded, spindled & mutilated the grammar.)

This version opens with the original Brazilian lyrics with Joao on vocals & guitar, followed by Astrud with the English version, followed by Stan Getz on sax. Classic.

I used to sing the Brazilian lyrics at a short-lived jazz jam session in Baltimore’s Little Italy. The quality (or lack thereof) of the singing had nothing to do with its untimely demise. :p

@Aleta: I believe that’s the version that appears on the Verve album Stan Getz – Bossa Nova. Which is a magnificent disk – there is exactly one clinker on it, when Astrud’s accent, so charming in TGFA, sounds completely at sea in the old standard “Never Trust Your Heart.”

The Swiss were neutral, had an obsolete military, and were surrounded on all sides by Nazi’s.

They relied on the exchange with the Nazis to keep their country fed during WWII, and even at that, rations dropped to 1230 calories a day, ( lower than Occupied France). They also interned both Allied and Axis flyers and escaped POW’s with comfort and care.

Yeah, post war their Banks were shits about hanging on to Nazi loot, in part because of their banking practices,

But so were all the Western Corporations that did business with the Nazis. Many still havn’t apologized or paid reparations.

Anyway, he gets the news of the arrest, a few odd behaviors from a few months back suddenly take on new meaning, and so he puts a call into the tipline with the new information. These guys were closest of friends for 35 years, but justice for a minor takes precedence.

And as things now look like crash-and-burn time again, the challenge returns to figure out how to escape the blame when Comrade Prznint Stupid burns the GOP to the ground.

Hence our call to burn the lifeboats. Make them pay for what they bought.

So what are the lifeboats this time if Tea Party is done away with?

Famously, Traitor Joe Lieberman’s No Labels comes to mind, the Centrism Project, and the newest entry, Purple: The Project for Democracy:

Purple is a non-partisan coalition, campaign and movement.
We span the breadth of American society to rediscover and recommit
to our democratic values and institutions.

Purple, get it? The blended color of red and blue!

Still need a hint: Both Sides.

Look, Purple, if you want to recommit to democratic values and institutions, you start by getting rid of amply be-chinned Mitch McConnell, who happens to be a Republican. And then you get rid of Concentration Camps at the borders created by the Republicans. And then you address Climate Change legislation, long-blocked by Republicans. I could go on (and on), but I won’t.

The point here is that Both Sides are not destroying us, it is one side, the Republicans who have gone nuts ever since Saint Ronnie started the boulder rolling down the hill that has resulted in the avalanche that has taken out our democracy and all of our democratic institutions.

Call our problem by its name: The Republican Party.

It appears that Epstein was arrested upon his arrival at Teterboro airport today. His plane records show he flew into Teterboro from Paris, were he had been vacationing since June 14.

Bill Grueskin Retweeted julie k. brown
If @jkbjournalist, @EmilyMichot and the @MiamiHerald hadn’t pursued this story, Epstein would be a free man tonight, and likely forever.
Keep that in mind the next time you hear those gaseous jeremiads about fake news and enemies of the people

    *

    Yashar Ali  ?
.

A former federal prosecutor texts how unusual it was that Epstein was arrested on a Saturday. But noted that the feds like to take advantage of airport departures and arrivals for arrests. Epstein landed in NYC on an international flight today and was taken into custody

    *

The same former federal prosecutor made note of this detail in the @thedailybeast scoop: that this case has been overseen by the public corruption unit in the SDNY office. Highly unusual for a sex trafficking case to be handled by PCU.
    *

Also they note that the fact that the indictment won’t be unsealed until Monday is also unusual and COULD indicate that there’s a second defendant in this case.

    *
Also remember that last week a federal appeals court in NY ordered the unsealing of up to 2,000 documents related to Epstein.
