Vermont’s been considered a high-risk, low-reward state — “only 16 primary delegates out of 4,690 nationwide”, chosen on Super Tuesday when the media attention will be on bigger prizes. And Sanders is popular with his constituents, if only because he’s familiar (and their expectations are low). But if Harris is running a fifty-state campaign, putting a VT marker down now would seem the smart move. If there’s local interest, she’s in a position to expand as the race heats up (and it’ll draw media attention!); If the new office doesn’t do well, best to get it out of the way early.

    I could never get past my basic problem with Bernie’s “electability” which is this: he had to win the primary. I don’t know why losing that election wasn’t a bar to his being considered hugely “electable”. It seems to be happening again, he’s electable but not perhaps ELECTED, so obviously I’m missing something.

    So just assume for a minute it was all true and Hillary Clinton and DWS engineered a coronation which meant Bernie was the only challenger. Isn’t that “advantage Bernie”? Because he did run and he did quite well and the Clinton/DWC conspiracy acted to effectively clear the field. For Bernie. Who had no other competition. And isn’t doing as well with more competitors.

    I just can’t imagine sticking with this theory if he loses another primary, because he will have tried it w/coronation conspiracy and without coronation conspiracy and WITH went BETTER.

    @Villago Delenda Est: If Matt wants to argue that Bernie is electable, I’d like to see him document, in detail, all of the other positive statements he made about the USSR and the pictures of Bernie’s honeymoon there and explain how some Trump voters will still be ok with him.

    If Bernie wants to be the nominee, he should be vetted appropriately.

    @Kay: His strategy, which he delineated Wednesday night on Maddow’s show, is that because of the number of candidates competing in the primary, even if it is down to only five or six by the time the voting starts, that there will not be a clear, majority winner in each primary. And, as a result, it will only take a plurality of votes in each state’s primary to become the nominee. And the Sander’s team strategy is that they can accumulate enough votes through getting the largest or second largest plurality in each of the primaries and, as a result, become the nominee.

    May the Sanders campaign die an even swifter and uglier death than I am. Yes, I know bitter and biting but has been so deserving since his poisoning of the political well post April 2016 IMNSHO.

    On my own report, been feeling the chemo hit which is why so little since last update. Was able to stay up with my wife to watch Captain Marvel, which we enjoyed both for the movie and for spending time together.

    So have a good weekend all, and my own prayers go out for all those fighting the concentration camps at the rallies.

    Adam, I really appreciate your concern for me, you as I’ve noted before are a major reason I kept reading and occasionally writing to this blog when I essentially stopped because of my parents health failing in early 2017. I find your analysis work always worth the read, so to me, being held in regard by such a person carries a special warmth for me at a time it truly matters.
