You watching the debate tonight? I will, if I have power. It’s off and on today due to thunderstorms. (I missed the second half of the last debate because of a thunderstorm!)

Dave Weigel’s debate preview in The Post is here. My guess is Sanders will be extra shouty. But that’s like predicting thunderstorms in Florida in July.

I’ll probably check in from time to time. I’m developing a distaste for primary debates, especially these huge ones, too much long term risk for the eventual nominee, especially with the collection of cranks and deluded no-hopers we have this time around.

    Newsom signs tax return law

California to President Trump and all future presidents: Release your taxes

Governor Newsom signs nation’s first Presidential Tax Transparency bill into law

Sacramento, CA – California sent a clear message to the Trump administration today: Stop with the obstruction and release your tax returns, or, we’ll do it for you. Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senator Mike McGuire and Scott Wiener’s landmark Presidential Tax Transparency Bill into law today. The law will require all presidential candidates, and candidates for the Governor of California to release their tax returns prior to being placed on the California ballot.

“If he has nothing to hide, President Trump shouldn’t be afraid to give American voters what they want, a copy of his tax returns. We know that over 60% of Americans want the president to release his returns, just like every presidential candidate has done for the past 40 years,” Senator Mike McGuire said. “This commonsense legislation applies equally to all candidates, from all political parties, including the Governor of California. We’re grateful to Governor Newsom, who proactively released his tax returns during the Gubernatorial campaign, for signing this transparency bill into law.

California is the first state in the nation to approve Presidential Tax Transparency legislation. SB 27 was supported by California’s Secretary of State Alex Padilla.

“All Americans deserve to know that the President is working for their best interest and not just for his own,” said Senator Wiener. “This was never about any single candidate, but about maintaining and strengthening the norms of our democracy. Come 2020 any presidential candidate who hopes to appear on the California ballot will have to show that they will not be using the office of the president, our highest office, for self-gain.”

The Presidential Tax Transparency & Accountability Act will require basic tax information to be shared with California residents and require that all presidential candidates, and candidates for the Governor, release the last five years of their tax returns in order to appear on the California ballot. The returns will be made available to the public on the Secretary of State’s website.

Prior to Donald Trump’s refusal to release any tax returns, every president since Jimmy Carter (over 40 years) had released at least one year of tax returns. During the 2016 Presidential election, Hillary Clinton (Democratic) and Jill Stein (Green) both released their tax returns.

Contrary to President Trump’s statements in public that Americans don’t care about his tax returns, polls have consistently shown over 60 percent of Americans believe his returns should be released.

“By the power of the US Constitution, states have the right to determine ballot access requirements. Senator Wiener and I have had numerous constitutional scholars consult with us over the past many months and they have determined this bill is constitutional in all aspects. That said, this is a fight worth having in the courts and we look forward to making the clear case and following through with the will of the American people,” Senator McGuire said.

Included in this year’s Presidential Tax Transparency bill is an urgency clause so the legislation will take effect immediately, prior to the filing deadline for 2020 Presidential candidates.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Good point about the cranks and no-hopers. People laugh at Williamson, as well they should because she is a crackpot who has no business being on that stage. But even through she’ll never be the nominee, she has the potential to hurt whoever is. We’ve got to figure out a better winnowing process.

I want to watch a good Seth-Myers-ish closer look at the debates, not the debates themselves. Do you suppose he could do that in real time somehow? I wish we could get down to 5 or 6 of them and let them fight it out. I hardly even care which ones at this point – although (and I can say this is a kind of old guy) I wish the old guys would drop out.

So, Trump not being on the ballot has no impact on Trumps EC because he’s going to lose by at least 30 points anyway. But that’s some epic suppression of Republican turnout that will impact downballot races. Here’s the impacted House GOPs:

    Doug LaMalfa
    Tom McClintock
    Paul Cook
    Devin Nunes
    Kevin McCarthy
    Ken Calvert
    Duncan Hunter

I’m assuming that Hunter is in custody before the next election. Nunes may go to DNI. The Minority leader creates a real problem for Trump . I mean, I’m pretty pleased with 46D/7R, but I think we can push that a bit farther yet.

@Quantumman: Sanders has repeatedly promised to support the Democratic nominee, even if a centrist like Biden gets it. So, Sanders can cause a lot of trouble in other ways. But Sanders going third party probably shouldn’t be on top of the list.

But if you decide to put it at the top of the list, what can you do about it? I’d suggest supporting through donations and any campaign work you can do, one of the other candidates who is more or less as progressive as Sanders (Warren) or moving in a progressive direction from a center-left stance (Harris). That will reduce Sanders’ influence and reduce damage he can do later on. IMHO.

@Martin: It only affects the primary ballot, not the general. It probably won’t mean much in 2020 as Sanders has released his taxes (finally!) and no Republican can beat Trump even with Trump not allowed to run in California. It will still help Democrats due to the jungle primary in most races.

@Baud: If Sanders attacks Warren tonight, then he is as inept a politician and campaigner as Baud 2020! Which would be bad for Sanders, since he claims he wants to win, unlike Baud 2020!

From the swings in the polls, I think the really big movements have been between more progressive candidates as a whole versus more centrist candidates. Despite uninformed babble from supposedly very informed news pundits, Sanders and Warren appeal to different segments of the electorate for the plurality of their support. A lot of Warren supporters are not going to automatically go to Sanders if he attacks her and she gets seriously damaged.

If Sanders is smart, he’ll work with Warren to attack centrists. And if both of them beat up on the other people on the stage, who mostly have absolutely no hope, the runts will drop out more quickly which I think would be a good thing.

Also, I think tonight it’s Sanders and Warren with mostly a bunch of centrist White dudes who are non-entities in terms of interesting policy or electoral chances, and I think that includes O’Rourke at this point.

And Buttigieg and O’Rourke have been offering much vaguer and more centrist policy proposals in areas of most interest to Sanders and Warren. So, I think both Sanders and Warren’s ire will naturally find its way to the others on the stage. I expect Sanders to be extra shouty and dismissive, but not at Warren. But I could be wrong, if Sanders turns out not to be a clever campaigner. In 2016 he didn’t need to be, so his performance then doesn’t tell us much.

Nothing even a little bit more important you want to hear from her or Biden about?

I’m only half serious. Gillibrand is a coward, a hypocrite and a liar, so I expect her to turn a blind eye to unwanted touching when it’s politically inconvenient for her.

But she has made equal treatment for women and zero tolerance for sexual harassment the cornerstone of her campaign, so why should she give Biden a free pass? (Well one reason is that she has zero chance of winning herself, and I’m sure she would be happy to accept a cabinet job from President Biden, and that won’t happen if she actually stands up for what she claims to believe in during the debates.)

And as far as Republicans making a big deal out of it…they are going to drag our nominee into the dirt regardless of some debate clip. But the corollary of what you suggest is that Democratic candidates should not attack their opponents in the debates for fear of giving Republicans talking points, and I find that notion absurd. Should Harris have left Biden alone on race? Seriously?

If Biden can’t even handle attacks from his Democratic opponents – and he was hopeless at countering the attack from Harris – then he will be DOA against Trump.

Moscow Mitch and Trump are really coming through for those coal miners, all right.

Miners on Tuesday blocked the tracks of a coal train in Kentucky for a second straight day as part of a standoff between a coal company that filed for bankruptcy and left nearly 400 workers without work and pay for a month.
The protest, which has remained peaceful, began Monday after a train was seen going onto property of Blackjewel, the mine operator that filed for bankruptcy without warning on July 1.
Word quickly spread through the community around Cumberland, a town of about 2,200 in Harlan County in southeastern Kentucky. Dozens of miners began showing up to block the tracks — angry that they mined the coal, but didn’t get paid for the work.
“We’re doing without money, food and everything else before our kids are starting back to school. We can’t even get clothes or nothing else for them, so it was like a kick in the face,” miner Chris Rowe told CNN affiliate WYMT. “That’s basically what it was.”

Baltimore may have some trash in an alley somewhere, but fucking Kentucky has white people just randomly discarded on railroad tracks. It’s a shame, really.

No, but I felt like that was a different issue, one that Trump is clearly not going to be able to exploit, and as hypocritical as it would be I think he’d try on “handsy Joe”. I’m just wanting our candidates to be choosey about what issues they use to get tough with on one another. Try to pick stuff that the split is less easily useful to the monsters on the Trump side.

Gillibrand insisted that she would serve out her six year Senate term just before the election, and then as soon as she was safely elected she announced she was running for president. She’s a liar.

And as far as her “zero tolerance” goes:
    – She happily stayed silent on Bill Clinton’s behavior while the Clintons helped get her into the Senate, and then she knifed him.
    – She looked the other way while a member of her own staff resigned because of sexual harassment from another staff member who is still with her. She hushed it up, and it only came to light because the media published the story.
    – She did nothing to press for the details on secret taxpayer funded payments made by members of Congress to resolve sexual harassment claims to be made public.
    – She has said nothing about the handsy conduct of Biden, yet recently insisted that she had “no regrets” over her part in removing Franken. Double standards much?

She’s a coward and a hypocrite. Gillibrand is all for “zero tolerance” when it’s politically convenient, but otherwise…not so much.
