It's been pointed out that he said "suspending" and not "withdrawing"

(IIRC, ‘suspending’ means he doesn’t lose access to any presidential-campaign funds he may have collected, so it may be just a legalism)

“Suspending ” is a technical term meaning “keeping the bank account open so we don’t die in debt”

Yes, good for Tim Ryan. And except for Wilmer (and no idea what rock Tulsi is under) all our candidates have explicitly called out white supremacist terrorism as a cause and the TOTUS as the enabler.

@Baud: Wilmer is a one hit wonder that keeps travelling the country playing his only popular song. He hasn’t got the ability or the smarts to adjust to changing circumstances and times. And his statement blaming mental illness instead of white supremacist terrorism and guns, again, won’t play well to the youngs he needs to stay in the race.

These days, when I go to Target, just doing my shopping, I wonder how I will react if I were startled out of my routine by gunfire.

Irony: About 12 years ago, I was in a Target when gunshots broke out. A dude tried to rob the snack bar. He was an idiot; there were already police in the store who were dealing with another issue. No one was hurt, dude was arrested without further incident. But it was scary AF. I had Spawn the Elder, who was, at the time, Spawn the Only. He was preschool-age and sitting in the shopping cart. When I heard the shots, I ran like Usain Bolt pushing a shopping cart looking for an exit, before hiding under a store display and calling 911.

I was at a rally for Warren on Thursday, and our local mall yesterday. Both times, I was thinking about crazy gun people the entire time. Looking for exits….

The mental health quote is a NRA talking point. He started echoing it after Wayne LaPierre introduced it.

And on liberal comedian Bill Maher’s television show last year, Sanders said mental health was “maybe the more important issue” than gun control. “We’ve got millions of folks walking the streets who are need of mental health and they can’t walk into a place and get it,” he said.

“This is the NRA talking point. I’m not saying it’s wrong, but I’m just saying, that’s what they say,” [Bill] Maher responded.

Why is it okay to blame mentally ill people and people who play video games but not gun owners? Why are none of these people afraid of stigmatizing any person with a mental illness or any video-game player, yet are terrified of even slightly offending any gun owner?

They’re not even consistent between 1, 2 and 3. Nothing they say makes any sense. If you say “video games” or “mental illness” you have to also say guns. I mean, the video games thing is fucking ridiculous anyway because it doesn’t hold across countries, but at least TRY to make the thing hang together somewhat coherently.

@Aleta: ICYMI, the NRA is continuing to implode. ProPublica (from July 30):

    […]

The former senior employee, Emily Cummins, who worked for 12 years in the NRA’s treasurer’s office, quietly resigned in November as the group’s internal strife escalated. Cummins, in a written statement that began circulating this month among NRA leaders, including at least one board member, alleges that Brewer obstructed the work of NRA accountants and vastly exacerbated the organization’s financial woes as he charged it hefty legal fees. Cummins confirmed that she had produced the statement, which was obtained by ProPublica, but declined to provide any additional comments. Brewer’s firm said its work was justified and of the highest quality.

The statement lays out a list of allegations regarding Brewer’s legal work and his treatment of NRA staff as questions surfaced about his law firm’s billings, which totaled $24 million over a 13-month period. In the first quarter of 2019, Brewer’s firm charged over $97,000 per day, according to internal NRA documents posted anonymously online.

Cummins accuses Brewer of trying to intimidate, deceive and silence NRA staff who were processing his bills while some accountants were growing increasingly troubled by the organization’s mismanagement, exorbitant spending and questionable deals involving conflicts of interest. Former Brewer colleagues as well as written correspondence obtained by ProPublica broadly supported her claims.

Remember last week when the director of the FBI said white supremacists were behind pretty much all domestic terrorism and Republicans replied by trying to open an investigation into ANTIFA? https://t.co/H8TWxo2NjQ— Freddie Campion (@FreddieCampion) August 4, 2019

    @Kay:

it’s hard enough for people with mental illness to deal with the stigma this culture places on it, this dumbass shit doesn’t help. and BTW trump is saying the same shit about how it’s all about mental illness. that should tell bernie something, not that he ever listens to anyone. fuck him.

Donald Trump, I want you to hear this. You need to be here right now

Last person on earth I would want anywhere near me in such a tragic situation

@Gravenstone: When I first read that I thought, Trump is absolutely the last person I’d like to see after such a tragedy. But, like you said it’s probably the only way they can think of right now to hold him accountable and make him face the sorrow and loss of these people. Maybe he’d like everyone to know how wonderful his cousins were and yell at the president.
@Jay: Exactly, they always say it’s a mental heath problem but they offer no plans to get everyone access to good mental health care.

The connection between the horrific white nationalist mass murder spree today in #ElPaso + Fox News giving air time to far-Right grifter Andy Ngo who spewed nonsense about "antifa violence" coming to #ElPaso, aka an #AbolishICE protest camp, needs to be put front an center. pic.twitter.com/0NLzZJtjOs— It's Going Down (@IGD_News) August 3, 2019

Devastating. The husband of the woman who was killed while apparently shielding her 2-month-old son from the gunfire in El Paso has also died. @Baud: I agree. If being a billionaire is causing them this much stress, clearly the only humane thing to do is confiscate the wealth that’s causing them such problems. Let no one say I don’t have compassion for billionaires.
