Late Night Open Thread: An Armed Society Is A Polite Society!

From local paper The Advocate:

A man who visited Walmart to buy his child a lunchbox Tuesday morning got caught in the middle of an altercation between two other patrons and was injured in the shooting that resulted, authorities said.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said there was never an active shooter situation despite initial reports that suggested otherwise. He said investigators believe two Walmart patrons got into an altercation while standing in the store’s customer service line and both pulled guns out on each other.

Gautreaux said investigators believe only one fired his weapon, striking the victim who was waiting to purchase the lunchbox and was not involved in the altercation. The incident occurred late Tuesday morning at the Walmart on Burbank Drive and the victim was brought to the hospital in a private vehicle.

He’s being treated at Baton Rouge General Medical Center and is currently in fair condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Katie Johnston. Gautreaux said the man was hit multiple times by gunfire, but they believe his injures are not life threatening…

(Update: Looks like no shots were actually fired — people panicked when an Active shooter! alert sounded, and someone was hurt badly enough to go to the hospital. Horrible that everyone’s so on edge, but it makes the gunfondlers’ defenses even more mockable.)

    @Lamh36: Yep. You’re going to get people hurt as others try to flee because they think shots are bing fired or bombs are exploding. And you may also get people who conceal carry draw their weapons and fire back because of the same sounds. Either way, nothing good will come of it.

    I don’t know if you have occasion to go through El Paso when you’re… oh never mind. (sorry, the million+ miles on 3 cars we owned sometimes confuse me about geography for most people). We got stranded in EP years ago when our “only” ~255K Voyager which actually had had an engine replaced suddenly lost its alternator. Luckily, we knew the Marriott there from previous, and Chrysler dealer was just down the street. But we were stuck for 4 days (weekend, they had to fly the part in from Denver). At some point, we asked a desk clerk for “what’s close by?” And she recommended the Cielo Vista Mall. (Hint: if you’re on foot DO NOT plan to walk there from the Marriott at the airport. It was December, and I was so cold it wasn’t funny. Never mind what it would be like in the summer…)

    But yeah, just another public venue we didn’t die in. Mr S didn’t die in the waiting room in the train station in Bologna which he used frequently when the Red Brigade blew it up in the ’70s. They patched it up and people kept using it. The cool thing about the Italians back then, and basically all the Europeans, and esp. the Brits really (IRA) was that they didn’t freak out. The Italians esp. remembered their fascist episode and weren’t having with that shit.

    This isn’t even a rant, but damn.

    I say President Harris or Warren call every one of them up for duty and send them to boot camp because that is the explicit reason given in the constitution for allowing civilians to have firearms. Deploy them to Afghanistan or Yemen after that.

    It’s sad that people are scared, but honestly it’s past time the general population started to feel the affects of this- public school children have been dealing with it for a decade. The adults will get better at capitulating to the demands of the terrorists. They’ll be obediently lining up and periodically evacuating or “sheltering in place”, just like their children already do. The current crop of school children will be well trained by the time they’re adults. People must change their behavior to accomodate gun nuts, and they will, because of course it’s impossible to even imagine that gun nuts would ever change anything or compromise in any way.
