Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

T R E 4 5 O N

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

We still have time to mess this up!

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Let’s do some fundraising for the special in NC-09. It takes place in two weeks, so we are in the stretch run. McCready is a great candidate. If we win this, expect some more Republican retirements. I upped the goal to $2500.

Goal Thermometer

This blog has become a fundraising powerhouse. We raised 375K in the 2018 cycle. Thanks everybody! We backed *a lot* of candidates who flipped seats. Let’s back one more.

Update. Comments are slow so I’ll give you a topic: two of my all-time favorite movie endings are Godfather II (with the flash-back to Michael joining the army) and The Limey (with a flashback to a different movie starring Terence Stamp when he was younger)..what are some other movies that end with flash-backs?

Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America ends in such a way that everything in the movie may have been a flashback. Does that count? And The Locket with Laraine Day and Bob Mitchum has flashbacks within flashbacks within flashbacks, and the ending is about all that isn’t a flashback.

I’m not sure a schmear of slobbery Trumpian lip-liquor is quite the raptuourous sign of endorsement that flies well in the (formerly) UK. Oh, no doubt the polysyllabically blathering one will flirt in certain personally adventageous contexts (“Please! And I always thought the significance of that flashback scene in Godfather Part II was that so many of the characters in it other than Michael — Sonny, Fredo, Tessio, Carlo — are all dead, mostly on Michael’s orders. Besides Michael, Tom, Tom’s wife and Connie are the only ones still alive at the end of the second movie.

Well, not only a cut in the tax rates, but a huge drop in tonnage mined as well, as the largest mines in Boone county have closed. Steam coal, intended for power plants, is not nearly as valuable in actual price per ton as Met coal is, intended for and qualified for use in steel mill blast furnaces. Met coal has to be lower in sulfur and ash, higher in BTU content.

Black bears are more likely to retreat when challenged, unless it is startled or you get between a mother and her cubs. They are notorious scavengers, thus will rummage through garbage cans and dumpsters looking for tidbits. They will claim DIBS! on any food lying around unattended, e.g., picnic baskets. So don’t do that. If you have food in the car keep the doors or trunk lid shut. A women near us didn’t do that, a bear got into the back seat, managed to shut the door behind it, and totally destroyed the interior of the car trying to escape. So don’t do that either. And, by all means, do NOT give any rug rats pieces of food to hand feed the bear so you can Capture the Moment photographically.

@Steve in the ATL: We live on the path the black bears use to get from the top of a ridge down to a river at the back of our property. And we feed birds. So the first spring we lived there, we say a mom and two cubs on our platform feeder. We’ve been watching and interacting with bears for 15 years now. This is a pretty wild area, so the bears are not dependent on people or used to interacting with people things like cars. That seems to be limited to Colorado. But this is the time of year when the mother bears eject their 2 yr olds – i.e., teenagers. Hungry growing kids with no set turf (mother bears are extremely territorial) and no experience. They tend to be afraid of everything. Don’t leave your garbage out, compost piles are at risk, and if you don’t want to share your sunflower seeds with them, take down feeders esp at night. In the fall, when winter approaches, the big single bears will be fattening up for hibernation. Same precautions. They are lazy creatures who don’t want trouble – unless their turf is threatened by another bear. If they are really bothering something, throw tennis or golf balls at them.

OT – but Trump has just directed that babies born abroad to US Citizens (Armed Forces, Diplomats etc.) ARE NOT US Citizens.. This FU to the military has to be the greatest kick in the nuts yet. You send an Army member to Germany and say that his child born over there is not a citizen?

@Omnes Omnibus: That’s excellent news, we only have black bears here in CA, the last grizzly was killed over a century ago(though it’s the state animal and graces our state flag).

I’m pretty sure the definitions of citizenship are written in the Constitution with additional layers of detail in legislation. None of which can be affected by Trump’s hallucinations.

Thinking that he’s (a) trying to destroy the morale of the military; and (b) trying to destroy the diplomatic corps. Probably a new assignment from his Russian handlers.

Nothing new to see here, move along!

@mrmoshpotato: Bears stay west of us. Mountain lions, not so much, but they don’t bother the trash cans or bird feeders.

    Cutest cowboy ever!

    @germy:

We need to grandfather in the rule that children born in America with an undocumented parent should be deported. We could then hand Trump his walking papers and kick his fat ass out of the country.
