Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

We still have time to mess this up!

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you don’t.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

“The call is coming from inside the (White) House…”

by Betty Cracker|  August 4, 20199:17 am| 219 Comments

This post is in: Gun Issues, Gun nuts, gun safety, Immigration, Open Threads, Post-racial America, Our Failed Media Experiment

While we wait for details on the most recent mass murder (the one in Ohio), further evidence is emerging that the El Paso shooter was a Trump-supporting, immigrant-hating white supremacist who was radicalized online and committed his horrific crime to achieve political ends. In other words, a terrorist.

Many lines from the so-called manifesto the terrorist published could have been tweeted by Trump, GOP Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel or the perpetrator’s own US Senator, John Cornyn:

Texas gained almost nine Hispanic residents for every additional white resident last year https://t.co/rbjpkzMGwf via @TexasTribune

— Senator John Cornyn (@JohnCornyn) June 22, 2019

Trump tweeted the following this morning:

The FBI, local and state law enforcement are working together in El Paso and in Dayton, Ohio. Information is rapidly being accumulated in Dayton. Much has already be learned in El Paso. Law enforcement was very rapid in both instances. Updates will be given throughout the day!

Thanks, President Police Scanner. Now go load your ass into a cart and play 18 holes at your self-branded resort on our fucking dime, you worse than useless sack of shit.

Regarding the El Paso shooting, Trump can’t and won’t connect the dots since they lead directly to his bloated orange carcass. The mainstream media is unlikely to connect the dots forthrightly today, if ever. TPM describes the terrorist’s gaslighting strategy:

There’s abundant evidence the shooter is a big fan of President Trump and certainly of his worldview. And yet the manifesto includes a sort of preemptive rebuttal of any claims that he is a Trump supporter or that Trump influenced. He predicts that “the media” will identify him as a white supremacist and blame President Trump’s racist and xenophobic rhetoric for radicalizing him and provoking the attack. Such claims would be “fake news” and such claims will indeed only prove that “the media” is “fake news.

It’ll be clarifying to see which non-Fox News media outlets participate in the white supremacist terrorist’s clumsy attempt at obfuscation. So far, the signs are not encouraging.

But El Paso native Beto O’Rourke didn’t mince words:

We’ve had a rise in hate crimes every single one of the last three years during an administration where you’ve had a president who’s called Mexicans “rapists” and “criminals,” though Mexican immigrants commit crimes at a far lower rate than those born here in the country. He is a racist and he stokes racism in this country, and it does not offend our sensibilities, it fundamentally changes the character of this country and it leads to violence.

Thank you, Mr. O’Rourke. These times demand plain speaking.

Sunday Morning Garden Chat: A Place for Everything…

From commentor La Passionara:

[At top] is a nice little bug hotel that I saw several years ago in the Missouri Botanical Garden. I have been meaning to start collecting the seed pods, etc, to make one.

And then I saw the Bee Hotel in the Jardin Des Plantes, in Paris.

This is quite an edifice, which I knew to be outside my skill set, but I was thinking maybe one of the handier jackals might be interested in making one, or a smaller version of one.

This was supposed to be a collection of sunflowers, and I suppose they are, but just not the kind I had envisioned. I do like the color, so I am not complaining.

Next, I noticed this had popped up in a bed behind my house. I have never seen this happen before, in the five years I have lived here.

So I waited a few days, and it now looks like I have a spider lily. That’s a surprise, but I am thinking I should have more of these, as I really like them.

Hope everyone and their gardens are surviving the summer!

What’s going on in your garden(s) this week?

In the Kitchen With John- Pickles and Sun Dried Tomatoes

by John Cole|  August 3, 20199:07 pm| 61 Comments

This post is in: John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

Again, I am writing this basically for me so I have a refresher what I did for next year. If you see something I am doing wrong, correct me!

Easy day today- pickles and sun dried tomatoes. Sun dried tomatoes first. I actually started drying yesterday, and that was a mistake. I thought six hours would be enough, and it was not, so next year I am going to start first thing in the morning. I have a Nesco dehydrator I bought a few years back to make jerky and I never used it and it just languished in the basement, so I brought it up and used it. First step was to select big round beefsteak tomatoes so I could have thick, wide slices. I washed the tomatoes, and cut them in about 3/4 inch strips (and next time I may even do wider!) and placed them on the dehydrator- I set it at 135 degrees, let it go six hours, and it was not done, but I was ready for bed, so I put them in the fridge. Took them out first thing this morning, and let them go. I checked every hour or so near the end, and felt for any moisture, and on slices that had none, I took them out. Continue this until finished.

The next step is a quick vinegar bath.

Throw one in the red wine vinegar, flip it so both sides get wet, shake it off, and throw it into a container with olive oil on the bottom. As you add tomatoes, add oil to keep them covered until you are done. I threw in a little basil from the garden:

I’ll transfer these to glass containers when I am done making them this year. I should note that a lot of people get rid of the seeds and I do not know why. I don’t have diverticulitis so YOLO.

Pickles were easy, too.

Sterilize your jars in the canner with a splash of vinegar to keep from getting hard water spots. Dump all your cukes into the sink, and wash them thoroughly. While they are soaking, start making your pickling juice. I used a couple cups of distilled white vinegar, water, some pickling spices, some black peppercorns, some dried chilis, salt, and brought it to a boil on the stove.

While that was coming to a boil, I cut a tiny sliver off the ends of the pickles after washing them. I stuffed them into all the jars, poured the hot brine in, threw in a sprig of dill in each, put my lids and rings on, and gave them a 20 minute process. I did that for six of them. For two of them, I let the pickling brine cool to room temp, and then poured the juice in, put lids on them, and just put them in the fridge. I’ll eat those and they will stay crisper without cooking them. Pickles keep forever uncooked, but I just don’t have room in my fridge for eight quarts of pickles. The finished product:

I hadn’t planned to do more than 2 quarts, but I was at the farmers market at closing time and the lady just wanted to get rid of them so she gave me a peck for five bucks. Also, this is the first year I have had any success growing dill- it always flowers on me- the trick is to just keep it in the shade, so mine is growing in a planter on the front porch on a portion that gets only a couple hours of morning sun every day.

Easy day today- only about 90 minutes in the kitchen total.

Let’s be honest: By the criteria of this batch — if you’re gonna include meatball subs, grilled cheese & pulled pork — America’s most popular sandwich is the hamburger, a front-runner of Joe Biden proportions.

Here’s the live feed. The update is ongoing. Was officially scheduled for 3:30 local time in El Paso, but apparently started early.

NBC is now reporting 19 dead and 40 wounded, though Sergeant Gomez who is doing the briefing is being careful about casualty numbers because he indicates they may not have all the updated information yet.

An estimated 20 are dead and many more wounded. The shooter opened fire in a Walmart with an assault rifle.

Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick told Fox News that 21-year-old man is in custody in connection with the shooting, which unfolded in the area of Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso. As many as 20 people are dead, Patrick said. https://t.co/kCGFlgPAdf

There are rumors that the killer published an anti-immigrant screed on one of the chans, but it hasn’t been confirmed. Jesus, this is sickening.
