    Good for Walmart. It’s a small step but still moves us in the right direction. Hopefully others will follow suit.

    I don’t care. Every pushback against the gun nuts helps. The GOP thinks that they can hide behind Trump on this one, and the weird assertion that gun fondling is not just a constitutional right, but a right ordained by God Almighty. But their lies and misdirection are not working as well anymore.

    Nutmeg McCain went full Wayne LaPierre on the View today, saying that she was just in Wyoming and if the government tries to take guns away, there will be violence. We already have violence, bitch. Better it happens to people who choose it than a 17-month-old just out shopping with mom and dad.

    I’m not sure that statement was correct about short barrel rifle (SBR) ammunition. Most SBRs, or AR pattern pistols, are chambered for either .223 Remington Winchester/NATO 5.56 ammunition, just like the full sized carbines and rifles. Some are chambered for .300 Blackout, which is a modified .223/5.56 round designed to shoot from carbines and shorter barrelled rifles. But there are plenty of full sized AR patterned carbines and rifles that are chambered for .300 Blackout. I think, perhaps, this was meant to state they would not carry handgun calibers, including for pistol caliber carbines. Otherwise, the statement makes no sense whatsoever.

    Thank the Goddess. I work for this outfit and, thanks to my stupid lege, have actually seen customers open-carrying while picking up the bales of toilet paper we sell. I’d rather have a gun-free workplace but at least the CC people don’t flaunt their neuroses.

    Courtesy of TPM, quoted from Walmart:

    “After selling through our current inventory commitments, we will discontinue sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition such as the .223 caliber and 5.56 caliber that, while commonly used in some hunting rifles, can also be used in large capacity clips on military-style weapons,” CEO Doug McMillon wrote in a statement. “We will sell through and discontinue handgun ammunition and we will discontinue handgun sales in Alaska, marking our complete exit from handguns.”

    “As a company, we experienced two horrific events in one week, and we will never be the same,” he continued. “Our remaining assortment will be even more focused on the needs of hunting and sport shooting enthusiasts.”

    @NotMax: That makes more sense, but those aren’t short barrel rifle calibers. They’re rifle calibers full stop regardless of barrel length. As I wrote in comment 8, .300 Blackout, which is a modified .223/5.56 chambering, is specifically designed to function better both out of shorter barrels and suppressed.

    @chopper: It was not intended that way. I was just trying to express that the Wal-Mart statement didn’t make a lot of sense as quoted above. Even with the clarification that NotMax made, I understand what they’re doing, but the statement itself isn’t quite an accurate description.

    I’m in a profession where firearms are a necessary tool. I do regular, quarterly training to maintain my skills and abilities in case I have to deploy and therefore have to qualify. So, to a certain extent, I have to be fluent in the language used by those who use firearms professionally, as well as those who do shooting sports, and the ammosexuals.

    And right now I’m in the wait part of hurry up and wait regarding a deployment. I was asked about a month ago if I was willing to go down range as a senior civilian advisor. If the folks who gauged my interest and availability can get all their ducks lined up, I will have to qualify either before I go or once onsite. Not that I’m going to be a shooter, but I have to be able to both defend myself and my teammates, as well as not be a danger to them should the balloon go up.

If I’m in a private location, I tell management and escalate to corporate. Everyone should do this. I don’t care if it shuts down 911, it’ll cause laws to change. Don’t ever tolerate it.

    @Adam L Silverman:
    As I understand it, the .223 (and related rounds) is used for hunting, but the same things that make it so deadly in mass shootings- a bullet that tends to fragment and leave nasty exit wounds- make it a lousy choice if you want to preserve as much meat and hide as possible. That limits its use in hunting mostly to things like varmints, where the state of the carcass isn’t important.

    @Adam L Silverman: Hunters look at it as a “varmint” round: in real life, that means shooting prairie dogs into a fine pink mist, and shooting coyotes. Which by my lights is a crime against nature. Either one. You pick.

    If you say “hunting round” to me, I think 30.06, with maybe .308 as a very distant second. The few desert bighorn hunters here frequently use .338 Lapua for the range.

    Walmart sells a lot of .223/5.56. I buy it by the box, Federal, think it’s 400 rounds per. That’s a lot of ammo coming off their shelves. What will be left? They’ll have the shotgun rounds and the big rifle rounds and that’s it.

    They don’t sell .300 Blackout. Or the .416 Griz or any of the specialty rounds. Very plain Jane, top selling calibers only. Walmarts only have two locking glass display cabs for ammo, not much space, so there’s no room for anything esoteric.

    Afghanistan: current US withdrawal plan risks ‘total civil war’, top envoys say

    Sounds about right.

    The majority of America’s ambassadors to Afghanistan since the removal of the Taliban government have condemned the US approach to negotiating a troop withdrawal, warning it risked a return to “total civil war”.

    Writing the day after a draft agreement was announced, the nine men, including a former deputy secretary of state, said they supported peace talks in Afghanistan.

    But they warned the current approach risks spawning more violence and insecurity, because negotiators have cut the Afghan government out of discussions and have planned the departure of US troops before sealing a full peace agreement.

    WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?!

    Man threatens Popeyes employees with gun after chicken sandwich sold out

    Popeyes told the Washington Post it was “working tirelessly to bring the new sandwich back to guests as soon as possible”. Fans were told they could sign up for the restaurant’s app, through which they would be told when the sandwich was available again.

    This news was not universally welcomed. In Tennessee, according to NBC, a man sued the restaurant chain for $5,000, alleging false advertising.

    In Houston, things got more serious. Restaurant employees told a local TV station that three men, two women and a baby at the drive-through and were told the chicken sandwiches were sold out. One of the men produced a gun, the employees said, and the group left the baby in a vehicle before trying to get inside the building. They were locked out.

    @The Moar You Know:

    The article said that Walmart estimated they had 20% of the US ammunition market*, and that after this goes into effect the share will drop to the lower part of 6-9%.
    Perhaps they might start stocking a few of the more esoteric calibers in certain markets now that they’ll have some empty shelf space to fill.

    *and about 2% of the US firearms market.

    Neither of them would have ever signed on to giving civilians battle rifles. But they were fine with handguns, and if you want to tackle the problem of gun violence for real, the battle rifle is a minuscule part of the problem. It is one to be dealt with (and the one that should be dealt with first as it will be the easiest) but not the one that poses the greatest threat to us all. We’ve gotta go after handguns eventually.
