As Brachiator pointed out last night, when Obama was President and visited LA, he’d stay on the westside where most of the fundraisers were and folk would complain about the traffic his visit caused. Trump, OTOH stays in DTLA* and closes down streets in downtown as well as major streets for him to travel to and from fundraisers in the Hills on the westside. Oddly no complaints. I guess at least he didn’t shut down the 405, the 10 and the 110.

Oddly, I blame Kavanaugh. For assaulting women and then for lying about everything in his hearing. Not the witnesses who reported the event or the woman who suffered it, even if she doesn’t remember. And WAPO did not get the scoop, so their characterization is completely self serving as well.

@Kay: I heard Terry Gross interviewing the two NYT reporters who wrote the book. They sounded quite sympathetic to Kavanaugh. They said you can’t really call what he did lying, except for his claims that some comment in a HS yearbook was meant to flatter the girl. They also said they thought he drank and partied too much when in HS and college but then “grew up,” became a family man, supported women by hiring them, etc.
I didn’t know what to make of that. I find that all kind of doubtful. By the time you’re in college, some aspects of your character are set, though you may act them out in different ways. If my son had acted like that, I’d have been horrified and terrified at the kind of person he was turning out to be.

@Kay: Maybe Trump sees him as a kindred spirit because he’s such a shameless liar. Some of ours are dumb or lazy or biased or they have a poor temperament for the bench but very few of them lie. The “oath” shouldn’t matter, BTW. He’s a judge and he lied in a hearing. This is anecdotal because it’s based upon this county, but I think most Democrats are centrists and many of them would like a centrist choice who has a chance and is NOT Biden. They see Biden’s weaknesses. By Biden utterly dominating that lane he may drive some centrists towards Warren.
We have Warren and Bernie on the Left and just Biden in the center. Someone should upset that dynamic. There’s a huge opening. I think Harris could do it. We could then conceivably end up with a Warren v Harris race which I think Democrats would love. That’s a great contest.

Kavanaugh’s tantrums at the hearing were disqualifying, independent of whatever monstrous things he did in his past. Judges have people’s lives in their hands every single day. They must not fly off the handle in incandescent rage, even when attacked. It looked coached, fake, over-the-top political (“Look, it worked for Clarence. But for it to work for you, you need to turn it up to 11!!”), and shows that he’s a tool and not capable of being an independent evaluator of the law and the evidence presented to him.
On the book, I was shocked by Drum’s take on the reporting on it. I think he’s kinda sensible, if misguided, most of the time, but when he comes out with posts like that it makes me wonder if he’s blind to what happened. Or if I’m in too much of a news bubble…
Cheers,
Scott.
Kay
@OzarkHillbilly:
I won’t get over the lying by Kavanaugh and no one else should either. If he were an ordinary trial judge the lies would follow him and harm his reputation. Because he’s on this elite court with lifetime tenure the bar should be HIGHER, not lower. I expect SCOTUS judges to lie LESS than a municipal court judge who has to run every 6 years. This is a rational and reasonable standard of mine and I’m not lowering it for this douchebag.
He lacks essential character traits for that position. You can’t fix that, and there’s no getting around it. He would not have the seat if he hadn’t have lied about the incidents. Lying “when it’s important” is not an excuse. It’s easy to tell the truth when it’s not important! That’s the WHOLE POINT.

A few months later my oldest came to me and asked if I had. It was a lonnnggg 15 seconds before I could answer. Not knowing what kind of relationship I would have with them then and forever I said, “Yes.” Without a word he turned and walked away. I have this fantasy of an all women race :)
It would be great! Harris and Warren and Klobachur. Left, Center, and Right re: Democrats. Geographically diverse too!
Joe Biden is getting in the way of that. As to ME. Bernie would be but he’s slipping so I’m not targeting him.
Baud
@Kay:
Polls make it seem like Harris people are leaving her for Biden or Warren.

Combative Lewandowski begrudgingly affirms Mueller report’s truth
Rachel Maddow reviews highlights of former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski before the House Judiciary Committee in which, despite his best efforts, he ultimately confirmed what the Mueller report said about his role in Trump’s effort to obstruct the Mueller investigation.

@Kay:
I’ll be disappointed if we gave up on Hillary in order to get Biden. But que sera sera.

@Kay: I think he’s a hack who contributes no value added insights so I’ll have to agree to disagree.

@rikyrah:
I hope they mean in the primary, not the general.
mrmoshpotato
@Baud:
Not sure how to read this. Are you saying Hillary should enter the race?
Jerzy Russian
@Kay:
In the movie Wonder Woman there was an island populated entirely by women.
Wait, did you mean “race” an in “a contest”?
Baud
@mrmoshpotato:
No, I mean that Hillary should be standing for re-election right now. We didn’t make that happen, so now we might get Biden as president, which would be a step down from Hillary IMHO.
zhena gogolia
@Baud:
I haven’t. But then I don’t live in one of the important states.
Baud
@zhena gogolia:
The two polls mentioned in this thread are national and Iowa, and Harris is way down in both, while Biden and Warren are up.
rikyrah
@Kay:
He’s actually there, day in and day out. and, seems to be listening to what the candidates are saying….
I don’t get that from the NYT

@Dorothy A. Winsor:
I’ll never forget Kavanaugh’s red-faced, sniveling, bawling, belligerent, full-blown tantrum conduct. Saying he “grew up” is a crock of shit.
rikyrah
@Kay:
There was an article earlier this week. Someone making the point that Biden does have the moderate lane all to himself, and that’s why activist Twitter-which leans left, seems to be confused by his staying power. They thought that he would have collapsed by now.
Miss Bianca
@Betty Cracker: Yeah, this. And when we have our side not only willing, but eager, to both trash each other AND leak the trashing to the media – as happened in Colorado, recently, to my personal knowledge and fury – it makes me wonder, sometimes, why I bother at all trying to fight the fascists, when so many of my erstwhile “allies” are so busy trying to score virtue points off each other that they can’t be bothered to stick together in the face of the real enemy. Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right…
jonas
@Baud: The victim didn’t deny it; she says she just has no recollection because she was completely shitfaced when it allegedly happened. The witness, Max Stier, confirms what he saw and others remember people talking about it afterwards. It’s not just made up.
The authors note this in their book, but it wasn’t in the excerpts published by the Times. Hence the editorial clarification. It wasn’t a retraction.
Quinerly
@rikyrah: Tail wags, soft meows, waves back at you! Have a great day!
mrmoshpotato
@Baud: I see. And agree wholeheartedly.

@bemused: Matt Damon making fun of Kavanaugh’s hearing was more under control than the blackout-drunk college rapist before the committee.
PJ
@rikyrah: Twitter users have the problem that Pauline Kael did back in the 70’s, when she couldn’t understand how Nixon had been reelected when no one she knew had voted for him. It’s a very small pool of active users who assume that, even if everyone doesn’t have the exact same opinions as they do, they are at least talking about the same things as they are. It’s bad because this delusion gets transmitted through the press (because most journalists seem to be active twitter users).
bemused
@mrmoshpotato:
True!

@Quinerly: suddenly consumed with thoughts of prickly pear and Chile food and beverage descriptions…..and photos of Poco amongst the dunes and such like. Can’t understand how this is off topic, more like mostly semi annual.
Now I cant stop thinking about that harrowing decent with rock music background.

@OzarkHillbilly:
ICAM with this. I have found this to be my biggest objection to Biden.

@Dorothy A. Winsor:
I had the same thought at the time and since. I have adult sons and would have been ashamed, embarrassed and angry if they acted like the frat brat.

@rikyrah:
Good morning. ?
mrmoshpotato
@rikyrah: Same here. As has been said before, Dump is a symptom, not the disease. He didn’t magically turn the GOP into a POS. He the flower (corpse flower) resulting from decades of planting.
“What level of ‘a-hole who will screw them over’ will our voters accept this cycle?”
ETA: Biden will walk into more of how the GOP treated Obama. You think he would’ve noticed.

Generation Sandwich observation: my mother-in-law has a landline and a cell (we’ve tried to get her to cut the cord, but nope), and she gets calls on both all day long! My God, how does anyone live like this? I’ve talked to more human beings on the phone over the last four days than I’ve done at home for the last four years! I’m finally starting to get over my instinctive flinch at voice calls, which in my world are generally reserved for bad news/urgent situations/elders…
Yarrow
@rikyrah: I didn’t know who this Twitter user was so I went to look at their bio and feed. He (says he/him in bio) seems to be anti-Warren and maybe pro-Harris, although I can’t quite tell the support part from the tweets I read.
I’m pretty much against tearing down any Dem candidates or their supporters. When eventually There Is Only One, we need all their supporters to get out and vote for her or him. I do think it’s useful to talk about support by POC of the various candidates because the Democratic candidate will need support from POC, particularly black women. Maybe there’s a way to do that without tearing down candidates and their supporters.
Elizabelle
@rikyrah: This is a ridiculous tweet. It needs context. We get that this twitterer is angry, but who is the tweet actually supporting?
I’m with Yarrow, just above. The anger and tearing down of another candidate — even though it’s not clear to me just whom — is unhelpful.
This is the part that is insane to me:
“Y’all should have voted for the original in the first place, and not the pale imitation.”
Excuse me. Warren is a pale imitation of Hillary? Since when?
Omnes Omnibus
@Elizabelle:
Stupid people are stupid.
Matt McIrvin
@rikyrah: Biden in this cycle reminds me a bit of Trump dominating the Republican field in 2016– not that he’s one tenth as horrible as Trump, but so many people seem to be expecting him to implode at some point, and he just stays at the top of the pack, supported by people who don’t talk to pundits. He doesn’t have a commanding majority but the rest of the field is still split.
mrmoshpotato
@Betty Cracker: Very confusing when I misread this as General Sandwich observation.

@bemused:
Li’l Brett made a hellova tandem with turbo Lindsay and his Senate floor hissyfit. In another context it might have been satire.

@Omnes Omnibus: Yup.

I’ll definitely go with “everybody since the CSA.”

@OzarkHillbilly: Story is that when Walter Chrysler was running company, he’d hire engineers by handing them a file, a T-square, and a lump of foundary waste scrap iron, telling them ‘Make a perfect cube.”

@Dorothy A. Winsor:I read last evening that there’ve been 83 complaints about Kavanaugh as a Judge, butthey cannot be pursued now because whatever statute those complaints fall under are not prosecutable/useable against SC justices.
I saw those 2 NYT reporters, now authors on one of the MSNBC shows night before last. They were really quite neutral.

Well if capitalism is your holy grail, and getting everything while you can your mantra then why should any of this surprise you? We now have three generations alive based on this concept that he who has the most is the winner. In everything.
